CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Orlando Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2014 President s Office Spring is just around the corner and I would like to welcome all the new members who have joined our fun loving group. It is that time of year that all you fair weather golfers can come out and play again. We do need more people to play in our events as the more that play the more attention we get from the courses. So brush off the dust on your clubs and join us. Our big event at Mission Inn is looking very favorable with players coming from all over the Midwest and East Coast. If you can join us this year, I think you will be very satisfied with the venue. We had a reasonable turnout for the members survey and got some very interesting results and after our board meeting we will determine which areas can be addressed. Drive those fairways and make those putts!!!! ~Bruce Misko Social Chair Even though we have all come together for the love of golf, our members are also very fond of socializing, and so we have another great event planned to enjoy the Super Bowl together! We will be gathering at the home of member Sue Walther on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2, for some wings, subs, and great libations! There will be a score chance board and a 50-50 drawing. Members plan to wear their favorite team colors and to engage in some spirited cheering! Look for photos in our next newsletter. ~Jim S. Membership Chair Seven memberships were received in January! ASGA is pleased to welcome four new members, Bob Driscoll, David O'Dell, Carroll Hagood, and Barry Williams and welcome back three former members: Theresa Dare, Brian Hanlon and Jackie Rogers. Come join in the fun at our upcoming events. ~Carolyn A. Communication Chair Since we use the Evite website for our members to sign up for golf and social events held by our chapter, we thought that it might be a good time to include a reminder about how to properly use the Evite system. Most members are quite familiar with Evite, and do use it effectively. However, please take just a moment and consider the following: 1. Each member should receive an Evite invitation in his/her email inbox approximately 10 days before each golf event. This is the preferred method of signing up to play. Phone calls and emails to the Golf Chair or the Orlando Chapter email account are time consuming for him and we would much rather have him spending his time on securing great golf courses for us. 2. When you receive your Evite invitation, click on the VIEW THIS INVITATION link in the message, and it will take you to the Evite site. Click on "YES" to indicate that you will attend. It will then bring up a box for you to indicate how many people are attending. It is preferred that each member reply to his/her own Evite invitation, but if you are answering for another member OR IF YOU ARE BRINGING A GUEST, you need to indicate the total number of people attending, including yourself, and use the comment block to provide the name of the person(s) attending with you. If you do not show the correct total number, the Evite system will not count your guest and the Golf Chair won't know how many people are playing. 3. If you are not going to play, you do NOT need to reply "NO". 4. If you are a member of the ASGA Orlando Meetup site (which is a great way for Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Orlando's Sunshine Fling March 21-23, 2014 - Mission Inn Resort, FL. If you have any questions about using Evite, please contact Linda Marcet and she will be happy to assist! ~Linda M. Golf Report & News Here we are with one month of golf already done. For January, we had a few very good courses with very good rates for the club to play. Our first outing of the new year took us to Disney to the newly remodeled Palm course with 32 golfers,18 from Orlando, 12 from Tampa, and 2 guests joined the fun and challenge of this course. We then traveled to Mission Inn Resort for the Los Colinas course with 20 Orlando members and 1 from Tampa. Our next outing was at the Windermere Country Club on a cold and windy day. We had the bravest golfers of the group, they looked like they were going to ski instead of play golf, but 14 Orlando members and 4 guests really showed their mettle and had a great time with their blankets and flasks of (I think) coffee. The response for the Orlando Sunshine Fling has been very good. We have guests coming from Boston, Philly, Chicago, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, Virginia, Fairfield, Denver, Kansas City, DC., Tampa, Sarasota, Palm Beach, Detroit, and New Jersey. Get your checks and registrations sent into your chapter; you do not want to miss the outing of the year. Starting about the second week of February, we will have our snowbird friends from Kansas 20 members and guests braved the cold in January to play at Windermere Country Club. All had a great time and it even warmed to almost 60 degrees! In case you don't recognize them in winter gear, pictured are ASGA President Bruce Misko, Board Members Suzanne Casto and Barney Coomes, and Sharon Micare! City in town for about 8 weeks to play in our weekly outings. They are also looking for people to play golf during the week with members from our chapter. Golf for February and March. ORLANDO S SUNSHINE FLING MARCH 21-24, 2014 We are returning to the beautiful Mission Inn Resort for the 2014 ASGA Orlando Sunshine Fling. Come enjoy the SUN and temperatures in the low 80's and evening lows in the 70's. We all had such a wonderful time in 2013 we decided to return for all the fun. Once you arrive all beverages will be HAPPY HOUR priced until you depart. That is the first new twist. We also added a second night of dancing in the lounge and pool deck area with games and pool tables. In 2013 we had 94 ASGA members from all over the country and we look for 120 members to attend the fun this year. Please register early and mail your check to have your spot for this fun event. Don't be left in the cold. Mission Inn is an inspired Spanish colonial architecture surrounded by lush rolling hills, located just 35 minutes north of Orlando and it's attractions. You get two championship golf courses, plenty of outdoor rec-reation, well -appointed rooms, and award winning culinary delights. Activities include fitness center, marina and boat rentals, skeet shooting, archery, tennis, spa, outdoor pool, hiking trails and volleyball. The resort traces back to 1916 carved out of orange groves and named the Floridian Country Club. Since 1969 another course was added, a clubhouse and the resort. The Mission Inn championship golf courses are like no other in central Florida. The historic El Campeon course has 85 foot elevation changes and the Los Colinas course offers rolling terrain and very long, both courses have very challenging greens. These courses are not cookie cutter courses, they offer scenic mature oaks, pines and palm trees, ponds, creeks, sand and the sighting of Osprey, Alligator and other wildlife. Arrive early or stay late and check out the Lakeridge Winery, a 2 mile drive away, or visit Mt. Dora, a quaint little town 20 minutes away. In addition, we re offering: Special ASGA room rates for those that want to stay extra nights at a cost of $115.00 per night Optional golf on Friday the 21st at Deer Island Golf Club, cost $50.00 Optional golf on Monday the 24th at Mission Inn, cost $47.00 To register for the optional golf or extra nights stay, call and book thru Mission Inn direct and mention you re attending the ASGA Sunshine Fling.
