STAFF NOTES Room 1 Tena Koutou Isabella King, Paige King and Daniel Bensley! Fantastic job of presenting assembly last week. You looked confident as you directed the whole school through the assembly. Well done! To the rest of the class, your recorder playing was excellent. Several parents and teachers commented on how lovely the playing was! Fabulous work! Congratulations also to Trinity for winning the Normanby Spelling Bee competition. She is the spelling champion for 2016. Congratulations to Julius and Jacob for gaining second and third place respectively. Miss Gibson junior (Miss Tash Gibson s daughter) has been coming in to help in Room 1 as she is thinking about education as a career choice. It is fantastic to have a person of her musical expertise volunteering with students. Jordy is also helping out with spelling testing and other jobs around the school. Concert Item Te Rawanake and Wairingiringi came in to listen to our piece last week. The concert item is at the stage where practise and listening to each other are important. For some students this challenge is repetitive, but we are learning that practise will make us polished (Hopefully.) Returning equipment Library books and reading resources were due today! Please can students bring books to read from home for the next two weeks. Class Goals o To practise (and practise and practise) our item so that we are ready for the concert. o To cope with all the changes of routine that happen at this time of year. Thanks for your continued support, Helen Barrett. Room 2 Hi everyone, We continue to practise our concert item and it is shaping up pretty nicely. Our theme is superheroes so the children are able wear any costume they would like to look like a superhero. They will be wearing a cape and a mask that they have created. Please start getting your child to think about their superhero costume they would like to wear during their performance.
This week is a busy week with concert practises and the beginning of end of year events, such as the house treats and a Christmas play. On Friday is the last assembly for the year and this is hosted by the staff. If your child has any books at home readers or library books, we would really appreciate if they could be returned ASAP. Mrs Taunt will be in the class on Friday. Have a great week, Jessica Room 3 Hi everyone, Thank you to everyone who has sent along the gloves and boots for their children. If you don t have any boots for them socks will be fine (we will make it work ). I would really appreciate it if these can be at school as soon as possible as we aren t able to practise our concert item properly without them. On concert night all the children in our class will need to be wearing pyjamas as it is part of our item. We have a busy week this week with concert practises and the beginning of end of year events, such as the house treats. On Friday is the last assembly for the year which is hosted by the staff. This week is the last week readers will be sent home. If your child has any books at home readers or library books, we would really appreciate it if they could be returned ASAP. Mrs Smith will be teaching the class on Wednesday while I am at a course. Have a great week, Clarissa Room 4 Kia ora everyone, Congratulations to Trinity, Julius and Jacob for coming first, second and third respectively at our inaugural Normanby School spelling bee last Friday. Thank you to those who attended our camp evening last Tuesday. It was a great way for the students to share our experience with you. We are continuing our end of year events from this week, getting our concert item sorted and preparing the things we need to for the Year 6 graduation evening. For our concert item we are creating our own Samoan sasa dance. This is coming together nicely and we will be putting the final touches to it this week. If anyone knows of a traditional pacific drum could we please borrow it for our item?
The Year 5 students are underway with their peer mediator training. Thank you to Miss Barrett for running this. We have two house treats this week. Kakariki have the end of term treat Tuesday afternoon and Kikorangi have the end of year treat on Thursday afternoon. A reminder for our Year 6 families to have your RSVP s in as soon as possible to enable us to allow for the numbers coming. As always if there are any questions or you would like to catch up please feel free to come and visit A ani te wiki nui, Richard Room 5 Hello everyone, This week is a bit of a celebrations week with two house treats to take place. The term 4 winners were Kakariki-Green House, they will be celebrating their success on Tuesday afternoon. The overall house winners for 2016 are Kikorangi-Blue House and they will be celebrating on Thursday afternoon. Also on Thursday we have some visitors coming along to present the dramatization of the Christmas nativity story. On Friday is the last assembly for the year which is hosted by the staff. Best of luck to all touch teams for this week s final games. Last week s games between the Y3/4 teams were so exciting to watch. This week is Computer Science Week. Room 5 will be exploring the basics of coding, building on the enrichment experiences some students were lucky enough to have with Miss Gibson in terms 1 and 2. We will use the ipads, classroom computers and Room 3 s programmable mouse. We will also use unplugged resources. I am very excited about this, as it will give me another opportunity to use my own learning experiences from the Ulearn 2016 conference I attended with Mrs Jefferies, Mrs Dravitzki and Miss Gibson during the October school holidays. For the concert we will be performing our interpretation of Hatapatu and the Birdwoman. We will need wings to be birds, and some tree/ bush impressionsgreen Christmas tinsel and wreaths will do. Your child will let you know what they specifically need. Also a couple of parent helpers on the evening to help with putting on the wings and a few extra bits like a bit of face paint/eyeliner. All students need to wear black, red and green colours in any combination. It will be most effective if the clothes can be as plain as possible. Have a great week, Liz
Room 6 A reminder that library books are due back, please have a good hunt for these. We also need any reading books that have gone home and been mistakenly left there to please come back. These are an essential part of learning and expensive to replace. No questions asked, even if you have found some from ages ago please send them back. Thank you to those people who have already sent them back. This week our investigation is around balloon animals. I believe this was inspired by the very talented people at our Scarecrow Festival. I think we might find this one quite challenging. Luckily for us Mrs Smith let slip that she has a bit of a talent for balloon animals. If anyone is willing to please donate a packet of long balloons it would be appreciated. In regards to the concert, we have changed our concert item as we were having limited success getting our first idea to work. This has meant a change of costuming too sorry. As a class we have decided that the best idea is to go with black and white. It does not matter on the style of clothes but as little of any other colour as possible would be great. Please let me know if you will have trouble sourcing these items as we may be able to borrow from others if we know soon enough. As always, any questions, queries, concerns you can contact me on my email tashg@normanby.school.nz Thanks, Tash Room 7 Hello everyone, Our dance is coming along quite well. I would like to have a dress rehearsal on Friday so we can see how the costumes look together and make alterations as to student placements in the dance. The class have decided to wear a dress up costume. This can be a sportsperson, a princess, a pirate [anything really, but not a superhero.] The only stipulation is that they must be able to dance in their costume. [No masks please] If you do not have a suitable dress up at home and can t borrow something, please come in and see me asap or send me a note. Please can the students have their dress up costumes at school on Friday. Congratulations to Kakariki for winning this term and to Kikorangi for being the overall winners for the year. These house treats will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Can all outstanding library books be returned tomorrow please. Also have a hunt around for any other school property and return it asap [no questions asked].

We will continue with our Christmas theme for literacy and maths and home reading will keep going until the end of this week. We have started our practises for our concert item and it is shaping up very well so I hope you will all be able to come along to the show on the evening of Thursday 15 th December to watch your child perform like a Superhero!
