MEMORANDUM DATE: September 9 th, 2016 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: MAYOR & COUNCIL MEMBERS DANNY LENZ, CITY MANAGER CITY MANAGER S REPORT PROMOTING PEACE 2016 Sept. 29 th, 2016 The City of Waseca is hosting, in partnership with Waseca & Steele County and Owatonna, the 2 nd Promoting Peace event on Sept. 29 th in Owatonna at Trinity Lutheran Church (609 Lincoln Ave S.) and on Sept. 30 th in Waseca at the Starfire Event Center (206 2 nd Street SW) (same agenda for both events). The conference is open to all Waseca County residents and is free to attend. To register for the conference go to: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/promoting-peace-2016-tickets-26584416706. Sept. 11: Fire Department Open House 1PM 4PM honoring the victims of 9-11 at the Public Safety Building Sept. 15: University of Minnesota Southern Research Outreach Center Open House 4:30PM 7PM Sept. 17 o 11 th Annual Golden Anniversary Classic Car Show at Club 57 from 9 am 1:30 pm. o 29 th Annual Waseca Marching Classic Parade at 12:30 pm Field competition 5:00 pm UPCOMING WASECA LIBRARY EVENTS The Waseca-Le Sueur Regional Library System is hosting upcoming events at the Waseca Public Library: Constitution Week: Come to the Waseca Public Library for Constitution week to learn about the Constitution and how it is the basis for America s great heritage and the foundation of our way of life and explore the historic events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. Two displays will be set up in the library from Sept. 17 23 will feature books on the Constitution, including books donated by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Great Fall Book Preview: Join Waseca Public Library staff for a preview of our new and upcoming books on Thursday, September 22nd at noon! Panelists will present intriguing new titles and introduce you to new authors. PRO TIP: Attendees get first dibs on the new books! Teen Instagram Photo Shoot: Liven up your Instagram feed with group photos and create photo magnets. We ll provide the inspiration and props. Teens should bring their phones. This free event begins at 6 pm on Monday, September 19th at Waseca Public Library, and is exclusively for ages 13-18. Fall History Series WASECA-LE SUEUR REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM 408 N STATE ST * WASECA, MN 56093 * 507-835-2910 Stacy Lienemann, Director Waseca-Le Sueur Regional Library System announces their Fall History Series. Virginia Wright-Peterson will open the series by discussing her new book Women of the Mayo Clinic: The Founding Generation at Le Sueur Public Library (118 E Ferry St, Le Sueur, MN) on Friday, September 23 rd at 7 pm. Wright-Peterson presents a new perspective on the early history of Mayo Clinic by focusing on the women who helped established the clinic s reputation and whose roles varied from surgical assistant and physician to clinic librarian and artist, and more. Historical re-enactor and educator Arn Kind will show how Minnesotans were key players in making history. The event will be held at Montgomery Public Library (104 Oak Ave SE, Montgomery, MN) on Tuesday, September 27th at 6:30 pm. Kind brings these colorful events to life through hands-on living history, incorporating costumes, maps, clothing, and artifacts with memorable and fascinating details. Author Michael Schumacher will speak about his book The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on the 41 th anniversary of the shipwreck at New Richland Public Library (119 S Broadway, New Richland, MN) on Thursday, November 10 th at 6 pm. Schumacher will provide a fitting tribute to one of the largest ships to have sailed the Great Lakes and its fate as the most legendary shipwreck on America s inland waters. Peter Klug will sing Gordon Lightfoot s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald at the event. Chef Beatrice Ojakangas will wrap up the series at Waseca Public Library (408 N State St, Waseca, MN) on Tuesday, November 15th at 7 pm. From 4-H to the James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame, from researching traditional Scandinavian recipes to creating egg roll recipes for Chun King, this Finnish chef will reflect on her life in food as she shares her latest cookbook/memoir, Homemade: Finnish Rye, Feed Sack Fashion, & Other Simple Ingredients from My Life in Food. This series is free and open to the public. Authors will be signing books at the events. This series is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and is funded in part with money from Minnesota s Arts and Cultural Heritage fund. # # # Please contact Waseca Public Library (507-835-2910 or lienemann@tds.lib.mn.us) with questions.
