2019 Sire Catalogue There s always room for improvement

AN EXCITING YEAR AHEAD FOR LIVESTOCK IMPROVEMENT CORPORATION Mark Ryder At LIC we can look forward to 2019 with great enthusiasm and, while we know farmers are experiencing concerns about their business post-brexit, however that concludes, we have to look at the positive opportunities this change will bring, gearing up our businesses accordingly. One of our most exciting developments this year is the launch of sexed semen. It s something our customers have been asking for over the last couple of years, and we ve been determined to deliver it. Collections from our first six bulls will be here this spring, and we believe we ve chosen the very best suited bulls, each having a good record for producing fertile sexed straws. There are Friesians, KiwiCross and Jersey bulls to choose from, all very popular with our NZ farmers, bringing with them great traits such as high milk solids, great udders and legs, fertility and deep bodies. All our sexed bulls are detailed in this catalogue. Please be aware that supplies will be limited in the first season, so I would urge anyone considering this route to contact your FSM, discuss the benefits and how best to incorporate it into their mating plan, and place an order. To enable this new business, we ve invested a substantial amount to upgrade our EU collection centre in Awahuri in the central North Island to ensure our UK customers have continued and growing access to LIC s top genetics. Also, to encourage farmers to look at fertility as a priority, and in a slightly different light, we took the decision to sponsor the British Dairying Cream Awards and the high fertility section. We are looking forward to announcing the winner at an awards dinner in February 2019, linked to DairyTech. Our Pasture to Profit consultants are working directly with grassland farmers, discussion groups and stakeholders across the length and breadth of the country as farmers put continued emphasis on the value of this essential crop. And our investment into National Milk Records is already paying dividends, making sound progress on a herd improvement solution and a more in-tune milk recording service to help farmers make important decisions about their herd. Our Premier New Graduate Bulls have daughters milking for the first time now and, as we collect data in New Zealand over the next few months, we ll soon know which are best suited to UK farmers. This is a unique opportunity, as you will have access to these bulls first, so keep an eye out for our announcements in the early spring. We have an exciting, and developing, relationship with LIC Automation, and the company s products marketed under the Saber brand. Looking ahead, EID will become compulsory for all livestock here and, as well as providing all-important traceability, will offer a unique ability for easy animal management and long-term cost savings. Being involved with the team at The Leen, this year s winners of the RABDF Gold Cup, was a very inspiring event in the early summer. It was encouraging to see the industry supporting a different way of doing things and was the first time that a grassland-based business had been recognised in this award. Our Pasture to Profit conference in October was a huge success, and we plan to build on this in the autumn of 2019 and hope to see many more of you there. It s a great opportunity to share knowledge and network, and we re already working on a stellar line-up of speakers. Finally, you ll see us out and about at events shows, open days and farm walks under the NZTE banner Farm Smarter not Harder. This initiative plans to bring all the latest New Zealand research and technology to UK dairy farmers, and to help them gain many of the benefits already enjoyed by our farmers down under. We hope you will join us during the year and see what other opportunities there are to work with enterprising NZ technology, Mark Ryder General Manager LIC Europe 2

BW CHANGES: FAT-TO-PROTEIN VALUES GET CLOSE TO PARITY DOWNUNDER by Greg Hamill, LIC Genetics Business Manager and Mark Ryder, LIC Europe General Manager. It s important that an animal evaluation index based on the efficiency of the bull s offspring in converting feed to profit reflects economic reality for farmers. We know that the dairy sector experiences volatility in milk prices throughout the years. For this reason New Zealand farmers see annual adjustments to the economic weighting of their index Breeding Worth (BW). Traditionally these figures haven t been released until February, when the spring mating season is complete for dairy farmers. However this year in early September, New Zealand Animal Evaluation Ltd (NZAEL), a subsidiary Bull Code Name BW BW Difference Holstein-Friesian 62 115043 Hyjinks AM Deejay S1F 159 116-43 62 112034 Carsons FM Cairo S3F 210 176-34 62 111036 Arkan FM Buster-ET S2F 198 172-26 Jersey 68 315045 Glenui Dregree Hoss 214 226 +12 68 313040 Fichtl 5-Star Sultan S3L 171 178 +7 68 314052 Crescent Excell Misty ET 264 278 +14 Kiwicross 68 514017 Glen Koru Beckon 275 254-21 68 513019 Van Straalens G-Force 217 226 +9 62 511011 Priests Sierra 236 211-25 of DairyNZ, officially released the new economic weightings that are set to contribute to overall Breeding Worth calculations from early 2019. This was an excellent decision by NZAEL. Although the changes still don t come in to effect until February 2019, the move allows dairy farmers to make informed decisions (i.e. bull selections) before the spring mating season gets underway. The economic changes also betteralign world commodity prices that our milk processors receive with the various milk/animal components that make up breeding worth. Before the September announcement, LIC s genetics and sire selection staff had already selected its 2018 bull teams based on the likely changes NZAEL would make, and had ranked the bulls accordingly. Now the official economic values have been released, we re able to include a new set of BWs for the bulls that LIC 4

markets: You will notice the and BW figures listed for each bull in the catalogue. The tables on page 4 provide some examples of the expected changes for our bulls, with current column indicating how the bull sits now, and the projected column showing how the bull will reposition in February 2019 (under the officially-released economic rankings, all other factors being equal). Breed changes are a reflection of the economic values impact on the traits associated within each breed, but breed choices remain the domain of LIC s farming customers. Whether you re looking at current BW or 2019 BW, LIC fields a very strong offering of bulls in all three breeds it markets: Holstein Friesian; Jersey, and; KiwiCross. So why the adjustment in 2019? Fat is back! Global dairy markets have seen a resurgence in demand for fat over the last few years, and this demand has been reflected in strong prices for the component. The graph below shows how the relative value of fat to protein has risen significantly since 2016. Fonterra s current three-year rolling average for value component (VCR) ratio sits at 1.3. Although likely to rise over the next few seasons, the current VCR of 1.01 that feeds into BW (which NZAEL is using) reflects a long term view of fat values; over the long term these values are expected to plateau and move closer to parity with protein values. BW remains the best indicator to use among NZ farmers who want to breed progeny that are profitable and efficient convertors of feed into what milk processors are paying, and being paid, for. What s driven the economic changes? Cows naturally produce more kilograms of fat compared to protein. The base cow (that the NZ industry uses as a benchmark in BW values), born in 2005, which came into milk in 2007, produced 218kg of fat and 174kg of protein when fed five tonnes of dry matter. With many processors receiving more money for fat than protein, the new weightings for 2019 better reflects long term predictions of where fat is likely to sit relative to protein. The move in BW is based on where prices have been sitting and an informed view of where they will settle based on global demand. For our UK farmers, as always, breeding decisions need to be based on the type of cow/herd you believe will deliver the most value to you in five, ten or fifteen years time. For many it will mean tailoring your criteria to suit your situation. Please look to your FSM for more information to support your decision making process. NZ FROZEN SEXED SEMEN TRIAL RESULTS 2. Cows: Mate a select group of highly fertile early calving, high genetic merit cows to frozen sexed semen. Potentially do this ahead of the main herd mating start date to reduce the disadvantage for those that do not conceive. The same caveats around feed budgets apply. Choose carefully: a. Fertile cows: early-calved, young cows with no uterine infection and a cycle or two under their belt in the pre-mating period will be your best bet. By Joyce Voogt, LIC International Technical Manager For many years, dairy farmers have been excited about the possibility of using sexed semen to drive genetic gain within their herd. It makes sense; breeding more heifer calves from the best cows while mating lower end animals to other AI options such as beef opens up more opportunities. However, farmers with block calving systems are also acutely aware of the contribution of a tight calving pattern and high 6 week in-calf rate to farm profitability. In block-calving systems the risks of slower calving pattern must be weighed against the benefits of more AI heifer calves and increased rates of genetic gain. Sexing Technologies, with its latest advances in the technology of sexing semen, was worthy of serious consideration. With all this in mind, LIC participated in a large trial with Sexing Technologies to assess the performance of the frozen sexed product in New Zealand commercial dairy farms. LIC hoped to see the technological improvements reflected in better non return rates (NRR) for this product on-farm. The Trial: The blind trial, conducted in spring 2017 across nearly 100 New Zealand commercial spring-calving herds compared more than 12,000 straws of control and sexed straws. There was a good deal of anticipation and excitement about what the trial results would show. The results clearly showed that there was still a substantial difference between frozen sexed and conventional frozen semen: The frozen sexed semen was, on average, 13.3 % down on NRR compared to standard conventional frozen straws. With getting cows in calf being one of the most important parts of any dairy farmer s seasonal focus, the reproductive implications of a reduction in NRR by 13.3% is significant: These cows would remain in the dry paddock for at least three further weeks. Is there a place for frozen sexed semen? Frozen sexed semen is available for UK farmers to purchase. Farmers may wish to continue using some frozen sexed semen across specific cows or subgroups in their herd. A planned approach is recommended, to help mitigate any potential impact on the herd s calving pattern. Options include: 1. Yearling heifer mating: Mating yearling heifers to sexed semen 2-3 weeks ahead of the herd. Their naturally higher average conception rates, along with mating the group well (2-3 weeks) ahead of the herd may help reduce calving pattern impacts. However, Feed budgets should allow for the extra earlier feed demand Bulls should be carefully chosen for suitability in yearling matings Heifers should be scanned early to identify those in-calf to AI and those in calf to run bulls Those in-calf to AI replacement sires should be calved separately to avoid mix-ups b. Good cows: don t waste a straw! Choose high merit, healthy, low somatic cell count cows. Interestingly, NZ farmers cull, on average, 6% of cows with pregnancies created from sexed semen for other reasons c. On heat: Make sure she is on full standing heat; accurate heat detection helps conception rates. If you are unsure, use a conventional straw. LIC continues to explore options as technology and the wider industry evolves. In the meantime, the product will continue to have a place for targeted use on some farms. Farmers are encouraged to assess the suitability of their herd and to discuss the impact of planned use on their farm system with their professional advisors. If you are interested, please contact your LIC Farm Solutions Manager for more information on bulls available. Joyce Voogt 6 Single A.I. Use Provision: The customer agrees that each straw of sorted semen purchased or otherwise acquired by LIC shall only be used by Customer for the single use artificial insemination of one female bovine with the intent to produce a single offspring, and not for in vitro fertilization or embryo transfer unless specifically approved on an individual customer basis by Inguran d/b/a Sexing Technologies (Navasota, Texas, USA) in writing.

ONCE-A-DAY LIC s Once-A-Day (OAD) index has been developed to help OAD farmers breed cows that persist throughout lactation and have longevity in the herd. The index has a strong correlation to Breeding Worth (BW) as well as four functional traits that are required in a desirable OAD cow: Capacity, Udder Support, Front Teat Placement and Milking Speed. The graph shows the weighting of the traits within the OAD Index, in addition to the existing eight traits of BW. SHORT GESTATION LENGTH With a team of bulls selectively bred to shorten gestation length, the SGL product can help you to shorten your calving, increase days in milk, and give your cows longer to recover improving their chances of getting back in calf. There is a range of SGL products available: SGL Hereford LIC and leading Hereford breeders, Shrimpton s Hill Herefords, have developed Hereford bulls with a gestation length up to 9 days shorter than their breed average. These beef bulls breed white-faced offspring that you can easily identify in the herd. SGL Dairy SGL Dairy is a team of bulls with a gestation length up to -20 days. When mated to a cow with normal gestation length, these bulls can reward you with a calving interval up to 10 days shorter than normal. The progeny of these SGL Dairy bulls cannot be kept as replacements. UNDERSTANDING NEW ZEALAND BULL DATA Across all Breed Evaluation The bull data in this catalogue is displayed across all breeds; this is in line with how the New Zealand Animal Evaluation (NZAEL) unit and LIC rank New Zealand dairy animals. Because many LIC customers here in the UK and around the world select genetics from multiple breeds for optimal herd performance, it is important for farmers to understand how an animal should perform within the whole herd, not just within one breed of the herd. LIC believe that an across all breed evaluation is the best tool to help you make breeding choices geared toward making your herd the most profitable it can be. Base Cow The New Zealand Base Cow is the genetic reference point used to determine Breeding Worth (BW) and Breeding Values (BV) for all New Zealand dairy cattle. All of the bull information in this catalogue is recorded relative to the 2005 Base Cow the average of 21,585 cows born in the year 2005 whose production and TOP (traits other than production) data has been set to zero. Each cow has been TOP inspected and herd tested at least four times to deliver an accurate result. Production Production is reported on their 270-day lactation yields relative to 5t Dry Matter: Fat kg 218 Volume (litres) 4595 Protein kg 174 Liveweight (kg) 500 Traits Other than Production Assessing the Animal Traits Other than Production (TOP) refer to the behaviour, temperament and physical attributes of a cow and are scored separately on a scale from one to nine. The four farmer-scored and 14 inspector-scored TOP traits are considered very important in relation to the overall efficiency of dairy cattle. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Data Processing Undesirable Average Desirable The raw data is then sent through to the New Zealand Animal Evaluation unit where within herd, region and national comparisons are analysed and processed. This information is then fed into the national data base as breeding values for sires. The average raw TOP scores of the 2005 base cow are as follows: FARMER SCORED MANAGEMENT TRAITS Sire Proving farmers score two-year-old heifers on the four farmer traits Low Score High Score Base Cow Average Adaptability to Milking describes how soon the heifer settled into the milking routine after calving slowly quickly 6.12 Shed Temperament describes the temperament of the heifer in the farm dairy while being handled and milked nervous placid 6.28 Milking Speed describes the milking speed of the heifer slow fast 6.33 Overall Opinion describes the farmer s overall acceptance of the heifer as a herd member undesirable desirable 6.57 INSPECTOR SCORED CONFORMATION TRAITS Stature describes the height at the shoulders of the heifer in five centimetre bands small tall 5.75 Capacity describes depth and width of chest and body in relation to the physical size of the heifer frail capacious 6.34 Rump Angle describes the angle of a line between the centre of the hips and the top of the pins high pins sloping 4.79 Rump Width describes the width of pins, hips and thurls relative to the size of the heifer narrow wide 6.17 Legs describes the straightness or curvature of the back legs while the heifer is walking straight curved 6.18 Udder Support describes the strength of the suspensory ligament, and the udder depth relative to the hocks weak strong 6.02 Front Udder describes the attachment of the front udder to the body wall loose strong 5.70 Rear Udder describes the height and width of the rear udder attachment low high 5.76 Front Teat Placement describes the placement of the front teats relative to the centre of the quarters wide close 4.53 Rear Teat Placement describes the placement of the rear teats relative to the centre of the quarters wide close 5.84 Udder Overall assesses the desirability of all traits pertaining to the udder undesirable desirable 5.71 Dairy Conformation assesses the desirability of all traits pertaining to dairy conformation, but excluding udder traits undesirable desirable 6.45 10

HOW TO READ A SIRE PAGE Liveweight A BV of 37 kg indicates by using this sire over the average cow in New Zealand his daughters are expected to have a mature liveweight 18.5 kg heavier than the base cow of 500 kg. Because Breeding Values (BV) are calculated across breed you would expect a Holstein Friesian to have a much higher (positive) BV for liveweight and you would expect Jerseys to have a lower (negative) BV. Milk A BV of 449 litres indicates the bull will produce daughters which on average will produce 224.5 litres more than the base cow per 5t of dry matter fed. Remember the BV is across breeds so Jersey and Crossbred animals may show a negative BV. Protein and Milkfat A BV of 25 kg indicates that the bull will produce daughters which on average, are genetically superior to the base cow by 12.5 kg per 5t dry matter consumed. A BV of 376 days indicates the bull s daughters are expected to last in the herd for 188 days longer, compared to a bull of 0 days. The average number of New Zealand lactations is now 5.5. Shed Temperament A BV of 0.00 indicates that the bull will produce daughters which on average, are genetically the same as the base cow. (For example by using a bull with a shed temperament of 0.14 the raw score for his daughters on average is expected to be 6.28 + -0.07 = 6.35 from a linear score of 9). The BW figure is how the bull will reposition as of February 2019, due to the changes in economic weightings. Please read pages 4-5 for more information. Fertility A BV of 3.8% indicates that 1.9% more daughters are expected to calve in the first 42 days of a herds calving period, compared to a bull of 0. As an industry New Zealand has a tighter calving pattern than dairy industries worldwide. Highly fertile cows have been necessary to achieve this. It is generally accepted that the New Zealand base cow is far more fertile than any other countries base. A sires BV compares the percentage of assisted calvings expected when he is mated to yearling heifers, compared to a bull of 0. A useful approximation for farmers to note, is that a difference between two sires of 0.5 in breeding value equates to a difference in expected daughter performance of 35,000 bulk milk count. The lower the SCC BV the better as you want to reduce the bulk milk SCC. BW/BV are calculated by NZAEL gbw/bv are calculated by LIC. Stature Again as the BV for a sire is comparing his progeny against the base cow which is across breed. Stature for Jerseys is usually negative and Holsteins are positive. 11

CHANGE IN MINDSET LEADS TO BETTER RETURNS Henderson is breeding his Holstein herd to Jersey to increase production efficency We visit Richard Henderson from Cumbria who has made some radical changes to his dairy herd management with positive results Taking on responsibility of the farm accounts in 2015, Richard Henderson from The Gill, near Carlisle in Cumbria, had his eyes opened on the true cost of milk production to his business which led to a complete transformation of the business. On paper herd performance was good we were producing 9000 litres per cow, with a 385-calving interval and the herd housed all year. We were growing multiple crops but had a high level of bought in feeds. However, once I went through the figures in detail a whole new picture emerged. The wet year of 2012 was a turning point, and I felt the work and stress involved in our system was not sustainable. Although we were making profit, the margins were low, feed costs were high and a drop in milk price would have had a serious impact on the business. It was disheartening to invest so much time and effort into a system that was so delicate. "THE POTENTIAL FOR GRASS TO PRODUCE PROFITABLE MILK IS HIGH, ESPECIALLY IN CUMBRIA." I knew it needed a whole new approach which was much less reliant on bought in feeds. I wanted a system that pulled back the feed costs without impeding on fertility and health. Too much emphasis had always been put on milk yield, which now seems a very ineffective tactic as without a focus on costs of production you may still be losing money. What was apparent to me was the need to manage my land better and that meant training myself and the cows in grassland utilisation. The potential for grass to produce profitable milk is high, especially in Cumbria. Yet, I feel, as dairy farmers, we still have a lot to learn. I joined discussion groups, researched on the internet and used industry advice to set about a whole new farm approach 58

LIC Farm Solutions Manager, Daniel Turnhout (left) with Richard Henderson (right) of a milk from grass system, with a move towards spring block calving and a minimum margin of 10ppl. To be honest, many people advised me against it, and I was aware it was a big challenge to transition to such a different system, but I had complete belief this was the best way forward for our business in the long term. The discussion groups in particular, were invaluable they got me talking to people working in the same direction and positive about what could be achieved. It was so encouraging and really helped me. To this day I still keep in touch with this group and we share information and knowledge, so we can improve. In the five years since the cows were turned out in April 2013, Richard has strived to improve grassland. I am always learning, but now am a little obsessive! Its all about residues and ensuring grass is at an optimal length to provide nutrition and regrowth. I use a plate meter every week to measure grass and calculate grass yield. It s the most valuable hour per week I spend on the farm. You ve got to be adaptable depending on growth and obviously this year has been exceptional, so we have had to add some straw and molasses to the diet as grass growth virtually stopped in July. But we managed to maintain performance and with little additional cost. We cut silage depending on grass allocation for the cows, and because we have the flexibility of having our own machinery, this can be up to 9 cuts a year basically taking out the surplus grass for our rotations. EVERYONE CAN IMPROVE BUT I THINK YOU NEED A 100% COMMITMENT TO FULLY CHANGE A SYSTEM I have also focussed on breeding a cow that works for this system. We had quite extreme Holsteins, which were inefficient at converting feed and were not bred to last. I wanted a smaller, functional cow that was low maintenance, and produced milk profitably. We crossed the Holsteins to Jerseys and within just a small time have seen drastic improvements. They are aggressive eaters, deep bodied with capacity for forage and just keep going with no fuss. I am on a solid contract with Yew Tree with no seasonality, so the Spring calving works well and the cows peak when the grass is at its peak. So understanding how best to get milk from that grass is absolutely key to profitability. Having come from an indoor system, I have also noticed how the cows seem less stressed post calving and peak lactation which has shown in mastitis and general animal health. Today, Richard, along with brother Michael, dad Chris and mum Mandy, successfully manages a system that aims to maximise milk from grass. All forage is now home grown and so far concentrates have reduced to around 1t per head, down from 3.5t at its peak. I still want to reduce concentrates, I want to focus on soils management and I want to get a system that uses the most effective varieties for the farm but this will take time. I do believe though, that given the opportunity of more land, I could grow grass well, and I couldn t have said that a few years ago. Daniel Turnhout, Farm Solutions Manager for LIC, who works with Richard adds, Richard is an ambitious and progressive farmer who is always looking to improve his business. Its been incredible to work with him throughout this transition 59

Henderson's crossbred cows are aggressive eaters, deep bodied with capacity for forage and keep going with no fuss and now see the rewards. His knowledge on how best to manage his grass has grown so much, and he has the confidence now to make daily decisions that will produce milk at a very low cost. I think many farmers can learn from Richard s experience and even if they do not choose to extend their grazing season as much as him, they can learn how best to manage their grassland to increase milk from grass which in the UK, is the most profitable feed available. Everyone can improve but I think you need a 100% commitment to fully change a system, says Richard. There s no doubt there are improvements to be made but I am really happy with progress. The transition to this system was relatively low cost; we already had farm tracks so we put some quarry waste on them with some dust on top and split our paddocks with single wire fencing. Other than that, the investment was in time to understand how to make this work. We plan to make this business stronger, continuing in our focus on costs, making more milk from grass, succession planning and looking for opportunities to expand, he concludes.
