Course Specification National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
1 Introduction This is the most widely recognised lifeguard qualification available in the UK. The award qualifies you to provide lifeguard cover in a pool environment during programmed and non-programmed activities. The NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool. Qualification objectives The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is designed to train lifeguards in pool rescue, CPR techniques, first aid and dealing with poolside emergencies in accordance with the Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools (HSG179) guidance. Employers often use Lifeguard s to meet their health and safety responsibilities for pool supervision. 3 Pre-Requisites Be 16 years of age or older Be able to: Jump/dive into deep water Swim 50m in no more than 60 seconds Swim 100m continuously on front and back In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool floor Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where design permits Target Learners Anyone who is 16 years and above and wants to work in a swimming pool environment. Working as a Lifeguard can offer varied working hours for those with children or in education. Progression Lifeguards can progress their career by training to become a swimming teacher, such as our Award in Swimming Teaching, or a beach lifeguard. The NPLQ is recognised around the world so it holds the potential to work and travel abroad. Experienced lifeguards can go on to become a Pool Lifeguard Trainer/Assessor which enables them to train other lifeguards, provide invaluable personal experience and well as running NPLQ courses. Opportunity for career progression, as most pool managers started off as working as Lifeguards and worked their way up to managerial roles.
