THE TILLER Lake Worth Sailing Club, Est. 1935 May, 2018 Commodore s Corner A view from above. Flying out last week I flew over our lake. It looked so peaceful and calm, like an oasis from the hustle of the city and day to day life. We are truly fortunate to have a place like LWSC where we can escape and fellowship with folks that may only have one thing in common, which is sailing. Our club was founded to promote the sport of sailing to the average person and make it affordable to all. It is up to all of us to continue to make this a reality. Please help your club by helping out at work parties, cleaning up under your trailers, picking up after yourself in the kitchen and just fixing whatever you see that is broken. It is everyone s responsibility to help keep our club in top shape. Responsibility is made from two words Ability and Response. So when something needs to be done or fixed do you have the ability to fix it? If so, what is your Response going to be? Your Board of Directors is really stepping up this year to make your club a better place for us all. Fair Winds Bill _) _) _) From the Vice-Commodre Kudos to the 7 brave souls who braved cold, damp weather to attend the April work party. Several members were out of town and some of our racers were at a regatta at Lake Arlington. The rain held off long enough for us to take down the clubhouse patio walls. The grounds were picked up and the clubhouse was cleaned. Then the rains came and the work party ended. Thanks to Gary Noyes for revarnishing the inside tables after things dried out. Opening weekend was April 29-30. A great time was had both days. Even though the wind was almost non-existent on Saturday, Aaron Brandt got most of the races in. On Sunday we had plenty of wind for the keel boats. I will let Aaron report on the racing. I would like to congratulate prospective member Jerri Berry for winning the women s Sunfish race. Her husband, Brian crewed on Sunday. The food the Berry family brought to the party this weekend was delicious. And a big thank you for helping out in the kitchen, too. Cindy McMillan and Mary Kayser did a great job planning and buying the club s portion of the Opening Weekend meals. The members brought delicious side dishes and desserts to go with the meals. Linda Butler, Jerri Berry, and many members helped Cindy and Mary serve, wash dishes, and clean up. It was a group effort that was very appreciated by Cindy and Mary. Many others helped out, please forgive me for not naming you here. You made the weekend a big success. Where else could you have had such great food and so much fun over two days for your $35 monthly dues! LWSC is a big bargain. On another note, please vote your ballots when the club sends you one. It is very important that we all have a voice in running our club. Enough said. Let the sailing season begin! Gordon Richard, Mike and Gary in action on opening weekend

Race Corner We had great weather for Opening Weekend! Saturday winds were very light, but we did manage to get 2 races off after trying several times under difficult conditions. We were unable to get the Open Dinghy race completed (look for an upcoming redo date). The conditions on Sunday were 10-14, building to midhigh teens after racing was concluded. Racing was very close both days. A special congratulations to prospective members Brian and Jerri for their great driving\crewing this weekend (as well as Helping Cindy and Mary in the Kitchen). Thanks, Aaron Reminders *Skippers, make sure to mark down your crew on race sheets *RC make sure to enter (Event, FULL Date, RC crew, conditions and course(s). Thanks. This is a big event for the club and we will need all hands on deck. If you are not going to race, we are in need of folks to drive a variety of boats. We will need committee boat, chase boat, mark boat and a photo boat. If you can help out with this or anything else, please contact Julia at; Regatta.lwsc@gmail.com Thank you for your assistance, Bill Heirendt 5/18-3

Trailer Trash If you have a boat trailer (with or without a boat) stored on club property you know this is one of the very best benefits of club membership. As with most things in life, there is a price to pay. Good news is the financial cost is very small, only about ten bucks a month. Club policy says that each member is responsible for the upkeep of their assigned slip, dock space (for board boats) and/or trailer space. That means mowing the grass under your trailer is YOUR job. Same goes for draining the rainwater from YOUR hull and other common-sense chores. With increased membership we are storing more boats and trailers than ever before. Springtime means rain and rapid growth of weeds and grass. The members who work their butts off keeping the lawn mowed and folks who volunteer for work parties can t be expected to keep all the trailer spaces clean. That s YOUR job. Grab your mower, line trimmer or slingblade, drop out to the club and trim up YOUR space. It s much easier to do it now before the weeds really get thick. Drain that mosquito breeding bilge water out of YOUR hull. Let s all try to get it done before we host the Catalina 22 Regionals later this month. While you are at it, put your initials on the tongue of your trailer. Use a piece of masking tape and write first and last initials (as listed in the roster). A volunteer (that s me) will then stencil your initials neatly near the hitch. Think of it as your parking pass. The treasurer will at last be able to keep track of who is being charged for what. In addition, everyone who walks by will be impressed by how tidy YOUR space is. LWSC Treasury In April, the club had to expense the quarterly property lease payment and the yearly liability insurance payment. These are both significant costs, which required a transfer of funds from the club s saving account to cover the total expenditure. As of today, April 30th, we have roughly $1,687 dollars of unpaid club fees/dues. If you have open invoices, please make payment as soon as possible. The club needs cash flow to pay bills and sustain services. If you have not received emailed statements or invoices from lwsc76135@gmail.com, please notify Dustin at your earliest convenience.
