Commodore s Corner Suna Kneisley, Commodore Hail and Well Met! Are you ready for a new season of sailing and racing? It s that time of year where we gear up our boats and ourselves. 2017 flew by and we had some of the best weather and racing I ve seen since I joined. The 2017 Awards Banquet was the perfect end to a great season of racing. If you weren t able to make the banquet, here s what you missed Our FLYC Board has a few changes. Mark Erdrich will be taking the place of Stephanie Erdrich as Secretary. And George Heintz will take the place of Bob Backer as a Director-At-Large. (We hope Bob will continue to attend meetings and share his knowledge and expertise.) Everyone else has agreed to stay on board one more year to provide some continuity. We will however, need others to step up for positions next year, so ask yourself how you would like to serve. As always, one of the best parts of the banquet was the awards. The Sportsmanship award for outstanding on and off the water promotion of fair sailing and sportsmanship went to Karen Preston! As many of you know, Karen has tirelessly served both the sailing community and the Big Brother Big Sisters organization for years. Each year she organizes an amazing day of sailing and picnicking. This event is a wonderful mixture of philanthropy and joy for sailors and kids alike. Thank you Karen! The Dan Buckley Journalism Award for outstanding public promotion of FLYC and sailing in local media and print went to Steve Galeria. It s about time that Steve was recognized for the amazing job that he does of promoting the Camellia Cup Regatta, year in and year out. Thanks in large part to Steve s efforts, the Camellia Cup continues to have a high rate of participation. Thank you Steve! The Golden Cleat Award for outstanding service to the club and exceptional volunteer spirit went to Joyce Johnson. For years, Joyce has made sure that the racers and sailors are fed well. (Why is it that food tastes soooo good after a day of racing?) Our tummies and our lips thank you Joyce! Now for a new year of sailing, racing and camaraderie. You may have noticed that a number of races are taking place on Saturdays. No more excuses from folks who can t make weekdays. Now it s time to invite, invite, invite new sailors! And finally, our next Membership meeting will take place on February 13 from 7 9 pm at Cabos Restaurant in Granite Bay. See you there! Vice Squad Kerry Johnson, Vice Commodore Recap of 2017 Awards Before we dive into the 2018 Racing Season I want to recap the awards that were handed out at the 2017 Awards Banquet. 2017 SUMMER SUNSET SERIES OPEN KEEL 1st PLACE - Mark Erdrich 2nd PLACE - Brian Camper 3rd PLACE - Jim Goldberg OPEN CENTERBOARD 1st PLACE - Mark Werder 2nd PLACE - Gary Preston 3rd PLACE - Kerry Johnson 2017 GOVERNOR S CUP SERIES OPEN KEEL 1st PLACE - Mark Werder 2nd PLACE - Phil Hodgson 3rd PLACE - Rob Koch OPEN CENTERBOARD 1st PLACE - Kerry Johnson 2nd PLACE - John Poimiroo 3rd PLACE - Steve Galeria

Perpetual Club Service Awards 2017 FLYC - Sportsmanship Award Karen Preston Congratulations to all!! 2017 FLYC - Dan Buckley Award Steve Galeria 2017 FLYC - Golden Cleat Award Joyce Johnson Looking Forward to 2018 Now on to 2018 - I for one am looking forward to getting out on the water a lot more this year. Our first race is less than a month away - February 2nd. As of this writing the lake level is at 421' and it is raining!! However last week the state did the first Sierra snowpack reading and the results are not encouraging - 3% of normal. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Not counting Cam Cup we have 18 races scheduled on Folsom this year, but we still need Race Committee for 8 days. Please take a look at the RC calendar below and let me know if you can do RC. First come first served. Don't forget RC gets bullets for races they run. Note - you can only get RC bullets for one RC day per series. New this year we moved the Summer Series races from Fridays at 6:00PM to Saturdays at 5:00PM. This was done to allow sailors who could not get off work early enough on Fridays to participate. See you all on the water! 2018 Race Committee Assignments Date Day Time Event Primary R/C Secondary R/C 2/3/2018 Sat 10am Spring Series #1 Mark Erdrich Steve Armstrong 2/10/2018 Sat 10am Spring Series #2 Mark Werder Steve Armstrong 2/24/2018 Sat 10am Spring Series #3 Kerry Johnson 3/3/2018 Sat 10am Spring Series #4 Suna K 3/17/2018 Sat 10am Spring Series #5 George Heinz 3/31/2018 Sat 9am Trans-Folsom John Poimiroo Steve Galeria 4/14/2018 Sat-Sun 9am Camellia Cup Regatta 5/12/2018 Sat 10am Lady and the Tramp Race Joan Poimiroo John Poimiroo 5/12/2018 Sat 5pm FLYC Summer Sunset Series #1 Kerry Johnson Jeff Nelson 6/16/2018 Sat 10am Katherine Eavenson Regatta 6/16/2018 Sat 5pm FLYC Summer Sunset Series #2 Mark Werder 7/14/2018 Sat 5pm FLYC Summer Sunset Series #3 Suna K 7/21/2018 Sat 10am Centerboard Regatta Mike Rayfuse Scott Fredrickson 8/4/2018 Sat 5pm FLYC Summer Sunset Series #4 8/11/2018 Sat 11am Steele Cup/Dinghy Weekend Mary Neederberger 8/18/2018 Sat 10am Singlehanded Regatta Suna K 9/9/2018 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #1 Mark Werder

First, I d like to thank Stephanie for taking this job on last year. It was especially difficult with the previous Secretary leaving the state and moving to hurricane and snow land! As of right now, I ve received renewal forms for about 5 members. As the PO Box master, Scott might have more, but please remember to get your forms submitted before you forget about it again. I will be at the February meeting if you want to deliver it in person, or you can mail it to the FLYC mailbox. Membership cards will available at or before the Camellia Cup. [The membership renewal form appears later in the Telltale.] It appears that we have three new members who joined in late 2017. They are Jeff Nelson who sails a Banshee, Jon & Susan Nickols who have a new to them Catalina 22, and Mathew Tooch who just acquired a Santana 20. Please welcome our newest members. And I will have your membership packets available at the February meeting. By the time you read this, I should have the website updated with the 2018 Calendar. I m also hoping to add the ability for you to configure your mobile device s calendar so the FLYC events will show up in your calendar and are updated as the schedule changes. More about that later. Treasurer s Report Scott Fredrickson, Treasurer December was very quiet, as usual, only a single check written, to US Sailing. Looking forward to 2018 with trepidation because of the low rainfall -- but there are rain showers as I write. There should be a lot of activity this month -- dues checks arriving, among other things. I plan to spend the rest of this rainy afternoon getting the 2017 computer and paper files organized and archived, initializing the 2018 transaction log, printing the new calendar. And tomorrow, a trip into Folsom to pick up the mail and run an errand or three. [Editor s Note: if you are interested in FLYC s annual summary financial information, email Scott at flyc.treasurer@gmail.com ] P.O. Box 156 Another scary letter from the Franchise Tax Board arrived, this one a request to file Form 199 (essentially stating gross income for a tax-free organization) -- for 2015, even though 2016 and 17 were filed -- so the FTB is 2 years behind??? Other than that not much except Time magazines, and no mail for other people!! 1st time in months!

FLEET NEWS Banshee Beat Steve Galeria, Fleet Captain sites.google.com/site/bansheefleetone Well, December was very quiet for the Banshees and there is nothing scheduled in January, but that s by design. It s the time of year Banshees like to stay close to the nest, keep warm, spend more time with family and friends, and get ready for a new year of racing fun. Looking back on 2017 it was a banner year for Fleets One & Two. Although some Banshees moved out of the area or on to other boats, more people joined the Banshee family the membership is now at 57 members. In addition, more Banshees participated in the 2017 Lake Series regattas than at any other time. There were a total of 76 boats racing in the 10 regattas [22 different skippers]. Here s a brief review of the regattas and who won: Camellia Cup (11 boats) - Craig Lee Feather Fiesta (7 boats) - Craig Lee Lake Yosemite (5 boats) - Charles Witcher Whiskeytown (7 boats) - Charles Witcher Gold Rush (6 boats) - Charles Witcher High Sierra (8 boats) - Charles Witcher Centerboard (12 boats) - Charles Witcher Steele Cup (9 boats) - Craig Lee Totally Dinghy (5 boats) - Charles Witcher Turkey Shoot (6 boats) - Steve Galeria 10 Regattas 76 boats Looking forward to 2018 it should be another terrific year of fun and racing. Planning is well under way for the High Sierra Regatta. As in years past, Craig and Mary organized reserving camp sites for all Banshees. They, with the help of Charles & Sherron, Dean & Daria, Kerry & Joyce, and Wayne & Dori, spent days just after Christmas at their computers to get the camp sites thanks to all. Also, Jeff Nelson organized a fleet purchase of new sails from Harry Pattison to get that all important 15% group discount. We think he and five other Banshees ordered new racing sails. And we all know what that means Jeff and the other guys will be faster, which also means the fleet racing will be closer and more fun for everyone. Thanks Jeff. In addition to this planning, the Banshees are getting together in February for their Annual Meeting to: 1) decide which regattas they will include in the 2018 Lake Series, 2) review the Class Rules, 3) review the Banshee website, and 4) recognize the 2017 Lake Series Champion. As always, in keeping with Banshee tradition, this will be a casual affair / pot luck dinner. Coming Events: Annual Banshee Meeting/Dinner Where: 11629 Heavy Tree Ct, Gold River, CA 95670 When: February 25, 2018 [Sunday] Time: 5:00 PM - Appetizers, 6:00 PM - Dinner BANSHEES - Fun Boats, Fun People, Fun Times Catalina Chatter www.catalina22fleet4.org Kevin Clancy, Cruise Leader THANKSGIVING WEEKEND CRUISE It s not often that you can enjoy sailing on Folsom Lake this late into the year. Due to higher lake levels, marina access to the Lake was open later than in years past. In fact, in 2015 the marina closed in June due to prolonged drought throughout California. Most members reminisce about being able to sail through September in normal water years, so this has been a great year! The cruise was scheduled for Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, with Laura-Ann as cruise leader. Unfortunately, due to another unexpected commitment, she only had enough time on Friday to

remove her boat for the winter and wasn t able to enjoy a final sail with us. Kevin Morton and I helped Laura-Ann get Quiet Time on the trailer, then we departed on Miss Irene for an afternoon motor-sail. The wind was almost non-existent that afternoon and the lake was glass-like. We had only the main sail up. After a bit, we cut the motor and drifted in a very slight breeze while enjoying lunch. After lunch I dropped Kevin off at the dock and found a slip in the almost vacant marina. It was like a ghost town, kind of creepy. My plan was to spend the night in the slip and meet up with Gary and Karen Preston in the morning. I practiced docking the boat by myself, both in the slip and at the ramp. I was having fun and my confidence was building. Later that afternoon the wind began to pick up and I decided to take Miss Irene out for my first solo-sail. I was a little nervous, but there was nobody on the lake or in the marina. It went surprisingly well and I enjoyed a great sunset before returning to the marina. I met up with the Prestons Charmed Life around noon. We had a slight breeze and were able to hoist the sails and make way towards the dam. I chased Charmed Life on the way out to the dam, but never really came close to catching up. On the way back to the marina, Gary and Karen sailed circles around me, literally! The next day, I was up before the sun because the wind had kicked up and the tarp above the cockpit was making a lot of noise. I decided to go for a quick morning sail and set off from my slip while it was still dark. I m glad I did, because I had a great breeze around 5 10 knots and was rewarded with a great sunrise. Plus, there was absolutely nobody out on the water. We helped each other load our boats and called it a day. Not a bad way to end one season of boating and begin another.
