This competition was the biggest we have had since EI finished, and it was pleasing to see some familiar faces return to SCEC, and also to welcome some new members!! Speaking of EI, Travelling Horse Statements will no longer be required post 30 June 2008. Yippee whilst understanding their necessity, they did mean a lot of extra work, both for competitors and committee see the official statement from the DPI later in this newsletter. And a big thank you to all those kind people who have heeded our call for volunteers. We had almost more than we needed for this competition, which was a pleasant change, and certainly helped the day run smoothly. Those of you who haven t volunteered before, please do consider giving up a couple of hours to help out. The more we can share the tasks around the easier it is for everyone. And also thank you to those who made our visitor from Tasmania welcome. Bernadette Gibson, brought her BIG (18hh) horse Amarcus over from Tasmania to get some experience rising higher level tests (see pic of them below), and very much enjoyed her day, commenting on the friendliness of the club!! Our next event is a Winter Warmer a Video evening of Sat 19 July so come along and enjoy flyer later in this newlsletter. Till next time, happy riding. Frances

From the Secretary s Desk Sponsors Recently we have been lucky enough to receive some new sponsors for our club. John Booth who was responsible for erecting the new safety fence, made a generous donation on completion of the job which is certainly a quality product. Flagstaff Industries then donated the sign that is now in place, advertising SCEC s initiative and the joint funding from The Department of Sport and Recreation. Thanks to Roy Rogers for arranging that. We are currently liaising with Jamberoo Country Store for sponsorship for each competition. Silas is the bloke to see there for your horse needs. He is from a very horsy family and has been instrumental in organising a much better quality of feed for his customers. Deliveries are available. Watch for some great raffles at the next comp. New members and meetings: It s good to see that once again new members are joining up to take advantage of our friendly competitions and great venue. We welcome Jane Green, Wendy Dennis, Margo Lohse, Ryan Carabine, Liza Carver and Tibby Barbour. It was good to see Tibby at our last committee meeting as she has recently moved into the area. Remember that meetings are open to anyone and are held the 2 nd Tuesday of each month at the Jamberoo Bowling Club. It s a relaxed atmosphere and meals and snacks are now available along with the usual refreshments. We start at 7:30pm and have to be out at closing time which is usually 9:00pm, so meetings flow along quickly. Why not come and have a say in the running of your club? Thanks also to Liza Carver for her generous donation to the building fund when she signed up for membership. A number of people add a dollar or two to their entry forms and it all helps. Talking of funds The committee recently submitted an application to Shellharbour Council for a grant to help with permanent arena construction. We had thought that waiting for Integral Energy to come up with the long promised poles was a no go but at long last we have been promised more poles to be delivered early July. So saying we have approached Roy Rogers to project manage the construction of the permanent arenas that will go across the top section of the grounds near the new fence. He has generously agreed to take on the task. It is important for us to try to offer our members top quality surfaces to compete on. While the surface of the grounds was pretty good for the last competition, we are restricted in where we can put up the temporary arenas. It certainly adds to the challenge when having to do extended canter back to working when bowling along downhill!! You can almost hear the penciller scribbling furiously. a little on the forehand, needs to show clearer transition back from lengthening. So we are determined to progress with the new arenas as soon as possible. Watch this space for news. Member Participation at Competitions: Thanks to all our helpers as usual. Special mention and a big thank you must go to the Savill s, Sharon and Terry, who do such a great job providing lunches for the judges and helpers and yummy things for the competitors. The catering involves a lot of and time and organization setting up the barbeque and all the equipment. Any profit is donated back to the club. We really appreciate their time and effort and hope to continue this arrangement for a long time. Happy Riding Mary

NSW DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRIES NEWS RELEASE Last EI restrictions end June 30 Precautionary measures retained in NSW since the eradication of equine influenza (EI) was confirmed in February will end at midnight on June 30, Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said today. From July 1 a Travelling Horse Statement (THS) will not be required before moving horses, the remaining green zone will revert to white in line with the rest of the state and all EI cross border requirements will be removed. Event registrations will continue, Mr Macdonald said. Horse owners will now be free to move their horses anywhere in NSW and across state borders without any EI restrictions or reporting requirements. This last step in the battle against EI finally brings Australia s largest ever exotic animal disease outbreak to a successful conclusion. No other country has successfully eradicated EI and kept it out. New Zealand and Iceland are now the only other EI free countries. "Many international experts believed we could not eradicate EI. We have again demonstrated our proud history of successfully eradicating animal diseases. NSW chief veterinary officer, Bruce Christie, said that without the ongoing support, patience and sacrifice of the recreational and professional horse sectors, EI would have become endemic. Of particular importance was the community s acceptance of the horse standstill, Mr Christie said. We could not have controlled the spread of the EI virus without the ongoing cooperation of horse owners. At the height of the EI outbreak horses on thousands of properties were infected and more than 200 new property infections were being confirmed each day. "More than 47,000 horses on almost 6,000 properties have now recovered from EI infection and no longer carry the disease. "To reach this point strict movement restrictions were essential. The NSW disease control headquarters in Orange will be closed on June 30. The NSW emergency animal disease hotline will continue to operate. Call 1800 675 888 to report any suspected emergency animal disease. As part of the EI eradication campaign the NSW Government: Vaccinated approximately 50,000 horses for control purposes; Provided vaccine for horse industry sectors to vaccinate more than 13,000 horses; Established more than 20 control and vaccination centres across NSW; Enlisted an EI workforce of about 2,000; Implemented a successful four colour zoning system to free-up movements, allow the breeding season to be undertaken and horse events to resume; Implemented a whole of Government response including Rural Lands Protection Boards, NSW Police, RTA, State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service and NSW Health.
