350 miles of Alaska INSANE JOURNEY Where the silence is the loudest, far beyond the polar circle, and above all, far away from the reach of the mobile phone signal, hot showers and soft beds, a bunch of friends went out on the Alatna River. The average age of the expedition was 25 years which included 6 members: 3 men and 3 women. They did not belong to any professional club of mountaineers or paddlers, although some of them had a wealth of experience with climbing and toplevel sports. Some were experienced paddlers, some of them less so. The choice of a suitable river had to accommodate that. Additionally, they also knew that they wanted to go into the absolute wilderness where they had only themselves to rely on. Therefore, preparations were not underestimated, to avoid any unnecessary risks. They did not ride a wild river for the adrenaline experiences, but to enjoy the beauty of the wildlife and the complete freedom. Therefore, they chose the Alatna River - the difficulty of the upper reaches is WW II, and the lower reaches is WW I. Under their map was written: No roads or trails in this area Equipped with INNOVA boats, food in bear-resistant containers and pepper spray. The plan was to cross over the continental divide and run down 350 miles south to reach a target on the polar circle, and they succeeded. Alatna is a 296 km long river that springs in the Brooks Range, amid the Alaskan wilderness. It flows all the way south, and when it finally reaches the polar circle, it flows into the Koyokuk River. Most of the time, it runs through the National Park with the very apt name, Gates of the Arctic. 20 21
