They finished the season 10-2 and district champs as well. There is a lot of potential in these boys and with potential must come hard work and a willingness to get better if they want to turn potential into success while they are in high school. I look forward to my 8th graders coming into my high school program next year and I look forward to another successful Jr. High team next year with my returning 7th graders. These two grades show a promising future for Sulphur Bluff basketball as they will try and continue the success that the high school basketball teams are having year in and year out.

FCCLA Members Prepare for Region Meet Judy Brown is doing an LEO test all about general etiquette for all kinds of social occasions from manners in eating to manners on the job. She feels very confident about her contest because she has studied to prepare. Angie Alvarez is doing a Math LEO test. She said, As I prepared for my competition, I studied Consumer Math LEO practice tests in which I concentrated on financial planning, figuring interest, preparing budgets, figuring percentages and tax and calculating recipe measurements, among other skills. I have a strong background in math which helps me on this test. If I m worried about anything having to do with this contest, it is that I could lose focus and not do as well as I know I can do. Kadee Anderson is doing a Star Event that is an Illustrated Talk. Her presentation is over Social Media. She says she is surprised that there is so much information online about social media. She feels confident about the speaking aspect of her event because she has experience in speaking events. She is, of course, a little nervous about how the judges will critique her. She says, I have had a lot of fun preparing and have learned so much! I m so glad I decided to do this competition. Megan Self will represent the Sulphur Bluff FCCLA chapter as a voting delegate at the region meet. She says, I will attend the House of Delegates where the new region officers will be elected. Megan continues, I think it s a lot of fun being in FCCLA. You meet new people and make new friends. I have learned to step out of my comfort zone. Casey Gore is creating a custom-fitted formal gown, featuring hand-beaded designs. The fabric varies FCCLA members who will be participating in the region meet at the end of this month are L-R Angie Alvarez, Skylar Evans, Casey Gore, Sarah Williams, Judy Brown, Kendra Jock, Kadee Anderson,, and Megan Self. from pure satin to crushed velvet, and the garment includes a cape with a hood, also hand-crafted. Casey says, The most interesting thing I ve learned is the mass complexity and value of constructing a formal gown. Casey has been able to do a truly unique custom construction of a garment. When asked what he worried about for this contest, he says, To tell the truth, I believe worry causes error so I always stay confident. Skylar Evans is doing an LEO test over the FCCLA creed, mission, and purposes. Skylar says that as she has studied she has found the true meaning of FCCLA is that it is an organization whose ultimate goal is to help people. Skylar is good at memorizing so this has been a good contest for her. She knows that she is becoming better educated through FCCLA. Katelyn McDonald will be retiring this year as a region officer. At this year s meeting, she is in charge of the Nominating Committee which will pick the new incoming officers. I decided not to run again so I can spend my senior year getting ready for college. When my sister was an officer several years ago, I wanted to be that person in the red jacket. I love all of the officers with whom I have served. I have gained many friendships with region officers and state officers, and I like going to all the different places we have gone. Katelyn concludes, I have learned many things as an officer like being more responsible because the whole region meeting is in the officers hands, and you have to be a professional because all the other members are watching you. Kendra Jock is doing an LEO test over Job Interviewing. Kendra says that she has learned in preparing for her contest that there is a lot more to FCCLA than cooking and sewing. She feels she has good social skills that will help her in knowing how various interview situations should be handled. Sarah Williams is doing her Recycle/Redesign project for the meet. PTO Invites Hogue, Moore to Speak at March PTO Meeting At the February meeting of the PTO, the group decided to make Open House the date for the Ipad winner to be chosen. Students are selling tickets for $5.00 each for a new donated Ipad. If you would like to purchase a chance, see any student or a PTO officer. Officers are Missy Overly, Patricia Byrd, Lori Guilkey, and Amy Ritland. Two teachers presented their class news to the PTO. Featured this time were first grade teacher Kristy Harder. She spoke about the 100th day celebration and the AR party they had on Thursday of this week. She has been administering the mid-year Texas Primary Reading Inventory. In Math they are beginning to add two-digit numbers with regrouping using dimes and pennies as well as telling time to the half hour. In Reading they are reading books about Black History Month featuring people like Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver. They are reading in small groups with leveled books. They are reviewing sight words with games and flash cards. In Grammar, they are reviewing was vs. were. In Science they learned about Groundhog s Day and made and measured shadows at different times of the day. When asked if there were any items that she would like the PTO to help with purchasing, Ms. Harder said that she could always use note cards and designer paper. She was also told that she could use money raised during the Halloween Carnival by the first grade for other purchases such as picture developing for class projects. Mrs. Weeks also has another money source for supplies. She is able to spend approximately $40 per month at Staples. She makes that money by turning in used printer cartridges. Mrs. Weeks, sixth grade teacher, also spoke to the group. PTO enjoyed the sixth graders advertisements that Mrs. Weeks shared that the class had created for products they designed. They have been studying advertising techniques used to compel consumers to buy. The class is reading the book Sounder. They are also doing research over American heroes in honor of Black History Month. They will create a two-page typed research paper. They are also studying China, Japan, Pearl Harbor, and interment camps in America during World War II. They have begun a geometry unit. In science they are studying force and motion and beginning a study of space. They will visit the Planetarium soon with a PTO-sponsored field trip. Another field trip they will take this year will be to the Holocaust Museum in Dallas. When asked if there were purchases with which the PTO could help, Mrs. Weeks stated that her custom of asking students parents for help was working nicely. She said that the parents have been very good about donating needed items such as materials for science experiments, etc. She also has another money source for supplies. She says that she gets $2.00 credit for each cartridge that she recycles with Staples. It doesn t matter what size the cartridge is. Each one gives us $2.00, says Mrs. Weeks. She asks that everyone please not throw away their cartridges but instead send them to school so that they can be recycled. Not only does the sixth grade benefit from this program, but any teacher needing supplies has only to asked Mrs. Weeks and she will add it to her list for the next trip she makes to recycle the printer cartridges. PTO has invited Mrs. Hogue and Mrs. Moore to speak at next month s meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, at 3:30 in the cafeteria. Pre-K, Kindergarten Celebrate 100th Day of School Pre-K and Kindergarten classes celebrated the 100th day of school this week when they wore their t-shirts to school that they had decorated with 100 items. They had fun doing this project with their parents. Then at school they made a picture from 100 cheerios, went on a marble hunt for 100 marbles. Then they found the numbers 1-100 up and down the hallways. All students brought 100 items. Then Kindergarten created something using all 100 items, and Pre-K considered size as they talked about the difference in size of 100 pennies as compared to 100 tennis balls. The Pre-K class also strung 100 beads on a necklace. The Kindergarten made the 100 sunglasses. They all celebrated with a special snack for the day. First Grade Celebrates 100 Days For the special day, the class did 100- item projects, researched what happened on this day 100 years ago, dressed like they were 100 years old, ate cake with 100 candles on it, and rocked to 100, along with several other 100th day activities. We were all glad to see the inchworm appear on the wall to start counting down the days until school is out.
