25 th February 2015 Dear Students of Haktari Taekwondo Academy: I have decided to make some changes to how Haktari Taekwondo Academy students are trained and graded. Firstly, let me say that these changes are for the betterment of each and every student that trains with me. Korea sets the bar as to how students should be tested, thus Patterns and 3-step are part of their system. However I have decided to allow 7 12 year old students from White belt to Blue Belt to train and grade without the added pressure of learning and performing Patterns & 3 step. All Red Belt students, regardless of age, plus students that are 13 years of age and older, will start to learn the Patterns & 3-step via our web page. We will hold special Friday night sessions to help with these technical aspects of the training. Once the student thinks they are ready they can then demonstrate their ability during the special Friday night classes. If they do the Patterns and 3-step satisfactorily they will then be ticked off as ready to grade at the next grading once attendance levels have been met. The students will not be required to demonstrate the Patterns or 3-step during the grading. I have found that 7 12 year old students have the most difficulty with learning Patterns and 3-step, so I feel it is time to give them a break and let them concentrate on becoming better at hands on Self Defence and light contact sparring - the two things that will give them an advantage in a real fight situation. As you can expect future gradings will now involve more Sparring, Stretching, Self Defence as well as timed Self Defence against multiple attackers as a replacement for Patterns and 3-step. It is my intention to source quality sparring protection equipment at a cheaper rate so as all students can then do more light contact sparring whilst wearing safety equipment. I will have some photos of Mooto Taekwondo sparring guards as well as the more expensive Adidas gear for everyone to make a decision on purchasing, we have a limited number of old sparring safety gear that can be used temporarily. All students will need to buy their own sparring protection equipment. A mouth guard will also be required. I realise some people may view these changes negatively. My pure intention is to teach students how to defend themselves properly through high frequency light sparring and self defence situations. I am confident that this will make them very capable in a conflict situation and ease the pressure on the young students by removing the need to learn Patterns & 3-Step. All students regardless of age can still learn the patterns via the web page if they choose. If you have any questions please feel free to either catch me before classes or give me call on 0418663144. Master Jeff Crane Head Instructor
