Strategic Plan The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron 2018-2019

The next 134 Years AT THE ROYAL QUEENSLAND YACHT SQUADRON The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron enjoys a proud 134 year history. This document outlines a plan to take the Squadron successfully into the future The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron enjoyed another successful year in 2017/2018, with consistent growth in our membership, historic best-ever levels in member acquisition and retention, and a positive trend of members transferring to on-water and / or full categories. These conversion trends demonstrate that the Squadron is fundamentally committed to supporting our members through their sailing journey from discovery to becoming a champion and our commitment to facilitating on-water participation through a diversity of pathways. Our Sailing Academy has also seen consistent growth in enrollments, as well as a diversification of program offerings. The introduction of new on-water, combination on-shore/on-water, and community engagement initiatives in this year have consolidated our Academy s value to the sailing and soon-to-be sailing communities. Further, the Squadron has a number of education and training initiatives still in development for the coming year, including the Keelboat Youth Development Program and Etchells Youth Development Program; both of which will also work toward improving the diversity of our participation pathways for both youth and adults. Coming away from an exceptional 2017/2018 summer in the sport defined by the inaugural Manly Summer of Sail, the Squadron has a number of equally exciting opportunities in the sport to look forward to in 2018/2019 and beyond. The 2018/2019 sailing calendar will undoubtedly be defined by the 2018 Etchells World Championships in October; complimented by our signature annual events such as the Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race and Musto Queensland Youth Week, which have already seen our sailors through the winter with some excellent sailing competition.

Belong... In 2019/2020 the Squadron looks forward to the inaugural Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Race, which was announced at the 2018 Hamilton Island Race Week. The Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Race will start at the same time as, and run concurrently to, the 2019 Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race, giving racers and cruisers the choice to participate in either a staged or direct feeder event as they head north for the Whitsundays Race Weeks. Looking forward, our Squadron has an undoubtedly bright and exciting future of growth and prosperity, the foundations of which are proudly outlined in this, our Strategic Plan. This Plan has been developed by the Squadron s General Committee to identify and leverage key priority areas and to ensure the sustainability of our Squadron for the next 134 years.

These three priority areas, or pillars, have been identified according to the needs and desires of continuing and prospective members; particularly focusing on the multidimensional nature of the Squadron, its diverse range of members and the variety of our member services and facilities. These pillars are presented here now in the form of a consolidated plan that we can all work toward together. PILLAR ONE Participation & Engagement Our first pillar focuses on our commitment to facilitating participation in the sport of boating, and providing more channels through which members and guests can become engaged with and involved in the sport; be it through learning to sail, racing, cruising, volunteering, crewing, coaching, instructing or even simply spectating as a start. Our goal is to provide the encouragement, infrastructure and environment to increase interest in and remove barriers to participation for women, families and youth as well as maintain and enhance our traditional boating pathways. In order to diversify our member population and increase RQYS representation at all level, we encourage and support learners to Olympians, across a wide range of participation options from stand-up paddle boarding to offshore racing and cruising. Further, it is also the goal of the Squadron to promote the sport of sailing and the success of our sports stars not only to our members but to the sailing community at large. It is our intention that this will inspire the upcoming generation of sailors and facilitate a sense of belonging that is central to positive Squadron culture....belong

Belong... PILLAR TWO Sustainability & Growth Our second pillar ensures the continuing prosperity of our prestigious Squadron for the next 134 years and beyond. Underpinned by strong business and membership growth, the Squadron s commitment to sustainability encompasses environmental care and protection, first class hospitality services, member asset development and preservation, and destination acquisition. This strategy will sustainably produce and protect assets such as our fish-friendly marinas, new Marine Sports Amenity building and exciting destinations down and across the Bay. PILLAR THREE Member Value & World Class Facilities Our third pillar embraces members as the life blood of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. We are proud that our Squadron has one of the highest percentages of boating members when compared with other yacht clubs in Australia. Our strategy also encourages and enables important on-water participation opportunities to our growing family, female, and social member intakes. RQYS provides the perfect membership proposition and participation pathway for those with a love for all things on the water. While this plan has an extended long-term orientation with the intention of building upon the success of the last 134 years opportunity, flexibility and pro-activity are hallmarks of any effective strategy and have indeed been the basis upon which many of our great achievements have been made in the past. As a consequence, this plan will be reviewed regularly as we achieve our goals, adapt to change and opportunity, and most importantly, exercise our agility.
