GROWS WHAT S INSIDE: February 2018 Newsflash FUNDRAISING Spaghetti Supper Fruit and ButterBraid Sales Legislative Day JOANN s rewards Little Hands on the Farm Static Judging Change Once again, we are selling fruit and ButterBraid braided bread for our county fundraiser. If you do not have your forms by now, contact your club leader. Forms need to be back to club leaders by Monday, February 19th. The product will be delivered on Saturday, March 17th. ISF Swine Show Changes YQCA Cody Keller Riding Clinic Lamb and Goat Weigh-in Money is to be collected at the time of the sale and checks made out to the individual clubs. Each club will keep $2.00 per ButterBraid and $1.50 per box of fruit. The rest of the proceeds go to the Crawford County 4-H program to make all things 4-H affordable and feasible for everyone. The top club will receive $75. This will be calculated by number of items sold divided by the number of members in the club. Additionally, the top five high selling families will receive $50 each. This will be calculated by number of items sold divided by number of 4-H members in the family. YQCA INCENTIVE: For families that sell more than $250 worth of fruit and ButterBraid, each of the 4-H members in the family qualify for a $12 coupon code to essentially make their yearly YQCA fee free for 2018. These codes are only earned by those that need to take the YQCA training to show livestock in 2018. Coupons will be released March 1st. 1

County 4-H Council Spaghetti Supper Crawford County 4-H Council will be hosting a Spaghetti Supper on Sunday, February 4th at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. We have noted that it is Super Bowl Sunday and have changed the time to 12:00 2:00 pm. You will have a choice of spaghetti with meat sauce or chicken alfredo with a side of garlic break and a dessert bar. This supper will be a free will donation for the County Council youth with proceeds going towards workshops they will host for Crawford County 4-H ers. There will also be a selection of baskets and gift certificates for silent auction. The silent auction will close at 2:00 pm. We hope to see you there! NEW OPPORTUNITIES National 4-H Partnership with JOANN Stores JOANN stores are connecting more young people to experiences where they can learn by doing, creating and making. By providing local 4-H Clubs with resources and tools to run impactful programs, JOANN will help bring the 4-H experience to more kids in need. Current & lifetime 4-H members, parents of members, volunteers and 4-H staff can save 15% off total in-store and online purchases every day with 4-H Rewards. JOANN will give a minimum of 2.5% of every eligible transaction back to 4-H to support programming. To sign up, go to: http://www.joann.com/4-h/ Legislative Day The Iowa Extension Council Association is hosting their annual legislative day in Des Moines on Wednesday, February 28. As a part of our legislative day this year, the association is inviting your 4-Hers to receive more information about the legislative process. Senior 4-Hers from each county will have the opportunity to meet with legislators, tour the Capital, and learn about the legislative process and what bearing it has on Iowa State Extension and Outreach. Brynna and Paige are looking for anyone interested in attending this year s legislative. Contact the office ASAP if you are interested! Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Each year, Crawford County selects an individual or couple to be inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. These individuals are chosen because of their dedication and outstanding service to the 4-H program in their respective counties. If you have someone in mind that you believe deserves this award and should be honored, please nominate them! If you would like to nominate someone, please call the office at (712) 263-4697 or by email at brynnab@iastate.edu 2

Little Hands on the Farm The Iowa State Fair is asking 4-H for volunteers (adults and children) to run the Little Hands on the Farm exhibit for this summer s fair. In order for the exhibit to run as smoothly as possible, it is necessary to have a minimum of 30 volunteers at the exhibit per shift. It can be one club, or a group from the entire county. Little Hands on the Farm is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and would need to be staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Each day is divided into three shifts: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Noon to 4 p.m.; and 3:30 to 8 p.m. Volunteers receive one admission ticket, one vehicle permit and a Little Hands on the Farm volunteer t-shirt. We need 30 for sure to sign up in order to reserve a shift and they go fast! If anyone is interested or has questions, please contact Brynna. FAIR UPDATES Static Judging Day Change Many county fairs in the area are at the same time as the Crawford County fair this year. Unfortunately due to the lack of 4-H judges available on the Tuesday of fair when we usually have our static conference judging, we have had to change our static judging date to Monday, July 23rd. We apologize for an inconvenience of this change, but are looking forward to having quality judges at the county fair. Thanks! Photography Exhibit Change There are going to be a few changes to the photography classes in the fair book for 2018. Due to the large popularity in the project, participants are only going to be allowed to bring FIVE photography exhibits to be judged at the county fair. This will cut down on wait times to be judged. Youth are invited to participate in a new county photography class sponsored by the Crawford County Conservation Board. Each person may enter one additional picture into the Photography Conservation contest. This a county specific class and photos are not eligible to go on to the state fair in this class. This photo is an addition to the 5 photo limit. Full rules and details will be published in the 2018 Crawford County fair book. REMINDERS Member in Good Standing Friendly reminder! To be considered a member in good standing, youth must be re-enrolled in 4hOnline prior to January 1 and attend a minimum of 4 regular club meetings throughout the 4-H year. If members are not re-enrolled or do not attend the 4 club meetings, you will not be considered a member in good standing and will not be eligible to participate in the 2018 Crawford County Fair. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Crawford County Extension Office. 3

LIVESTOCK Iowa State Fair Swine Show The 2018 State Fair 4-H Swine Show will be a declared weight show. This means that pigs will not be weighed by the committee. All exhibitors will receive a weigh card when they check in at the Swine Office with their materials. There will be scales throughout the barn for exhibitors to use to check their weights. Pigs will still be checked in for ear notches, DNA tags, registration, and to tattoo pigs going on the truck. The reason for the change is to decrease the stress on the pigs throughout the days leading up to the show. There will be a 15 pound weigh back for the top pigs in class. This means they must be within 15 pounds on both sides of the declared weight. Please be on the lookout for the official rules on the Extension 4-H State Fair Livestock page. Any questions please ask! Quality Assurance YQCA For 2018, Iowa 4-H will make the transition to YQCA as the quality assurance training to be completed by all livestock exhibitors. Anyone who has tested out in the FSQA program will have their tests honored for this year permitting that they do not expire in 2018. No FSQA exams or face-to-face classes will be offered. YQCA is an online-based program that allows the flexibility for the training to be completed at your convenience. Like FSQA, all youth exhibiting livestock (Beef, Goats, Sheep, Swine, Rabbits, and Poultry) must complete this training prior to July 1, 2018. Due to miscommunication with YQCA, the only coupons being offered are a full price coupon for youth of families that sell more than $250 worth of fruit and ButterBraids. These coupons were made possible by a generous donation from the Crawford County Cattlemen. Otherwise, all trainings must be done online and without a coupon cost $12 a person. Training can be completed at: https://yqca.learngrow.io/account/login 2018 Iowa Youth Equine Extravaganza The 2018 Equine Extravaganza will be held at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls on March 23rd 25th. We all know that having horses requires more than riding and jumping. Get motivated to learn more about the science behind horses at Equine Extravaganza! Some activities include Quiz Bowl Competition, Arts contests, Team demonstration contests, Hippology contests, clinicians, and much more! If you have never participate before, consider attending this year and observing or jump right in. You can find more information and registration details at: https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/equineextravaganza. Cody Keller 4-H 2 Day Riding Clinic Cody Keller will be hosting a 2 day Riding Clinic for 4-H youth April 14-15 on the Crawford County Fairgrounds in the EXPO Building. This clinic is open to all 4-H youth in grades 8-12 in horse project. Clinic is progressive starting out with groundwork and increasing to riding all while building confidence between horse and rider. Strong emphasis will be placed on horsemanship and participants will also learn exercises to correct bad behavior and so much more.
