The coal mine closed in 1946 and a ¼ mile dirt track was built. ¼ mile dirt track opened in 1947. ½ mile paved track built in 1967. Over the years, promoters continued to enhance the track and renovate the property. The track closed in 2004 and sat vacant until 2009 when Steve Puvalowski purchased it. Steve renovated the track for 18 months. He cleaned up the mess from being left vacant, added the new dirt track, purchased additional property to add parking off of Wheeler Road and relocated the grandstands from the current pits to the new property side. Tri-City Motor Speedway reopened as a 3/8 mile dirt track on June 17, 2011. Tony Stewart chose TCMS to make his comeback to Sprint car racing on July 18, 2014. Continuous renovations include: expanding the pits, adding electrical service and grandstand parking lot lights, new PA system and numerous property clean-up projects.
