June 14 th, 2018 Dear NRS members A bit over a year has passed since the Nordic Rheology Conference 2017, which was the combined with the Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) in Copenhagen in April 2017. The conference had 460 participants from 35 countries and was a huge project, involving the entire organizing committee, the NRS board, and our numerous volunteers. Thus, the past year in essence has been a kind of hibernation. Overall, the conference got much positive feedback from the participants, and we managed to attract generous sponsorship, exceeding all our expectations, which even gave a surplus to NRS. Nordic Rheology Conference 2018 was organized in Trondheim, and the organizers, Catherine Nordgård and Kurt Ingar Draget from NTNU and Bjørnar Lund and Jan David Ytrehus from SINTEF with their teams really did a terrific job in arranging a well-run conference with a friendly atmosphere. I sincerely wish to thank the organizers on behalf of the NRS board! As a non-profit society, the NRS is not aiming at accumulating profits, but using its money in the ways we see best for the society and its members. Again this year we have used time and finances in improving the website to serve the members better, as well as increased presence on LinkedIn and Facebook. The information flow on social media has been successful and the European Society of Rheology has decided to join forces with the NRS instead of starting separate ESR channels. Even more sophisticated functions are either already implemented or under development, for example, calendar of events, new handling of the annual transactions, and a new NRC page. As usual, Mats Stading has been the driver for the website improvements thank you Mats! We also hand out student travel grants to encourage students to participate in the NRC conferences. This year we had two applicants, Simon Ingelsten and Georg Surber, who were granted 250 EUR each. NRS also has two awards, the Karl Clason Rheology Award and The Young Rheologist Award, for which all of you can nominate candidates. This year we have not received any nominations, but please keep these in mind for the next year, read more about the awards on the NRS webpage, and send your nominations to the election committee whose contact details you also find on the webpage. As you know, Nordic Rheology Society is, in principle active in all the Nordic countries; Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. However, the Icelandic activity has mostly been reliant on the work of two hard working individuals, who after several years of enthusiastic engagement have had to prioritize other activities. Therefore, we currently have no Icelandic representative or deputy on the board. Mats Stading and our past-president Stefania Baldursdottir have managed to establish new contacts in the University of Iceland, and we have had preliminary discussions with them. We hope to have an active representation in

June 14 th, 2018 Iceland again, and some activities planned for facilitating this have been preliminarily discussed, for example organizing a local meeting in Reykjavik to make the society known to the Icelandic scientific community. Other local rheology meetings are under planning, and you will hear more about them in the future. Organizing informal, local meetings is something that any of you individual members can do in your area, and if you have an interest in this and ideas on a particular topic, please do not hesitate to contact the NRS board members to get more information. The society will assist both in advertising and, if needed, financing, for example for compensating the travel expenses of the event speaker. Last year has been a year of changes for me personally, as I have changed jobs from university to industry, and the first months in the corporate life have kept me unbelievably busy. Therefore, I really want to thank the NRS secretary Olli-VIlle Laukkanen for keeping up such splendid work with all the running matters, despite being busy finishing his PhD thesis! Our treasurer for the past two years, Johannes Thunberg, has decided to step down from the post and we are therefore electing a new treasurer in this meeting. On behalf of the whole board, I wish to thank Johannes for taking care of the NRS finances with such devotion and meticulousness! I would also like to thank all the rest of the board members once again for your volunteering efforts for the NRS, and Roland Kádár for editing the Annual Transactions of the NRS. Finally, I d like to thank all of you, members of the Nordic Rheology Society, who are the reason that our society exists. Johanna Aho President of the Nordic Rheology Society

To The Annual Meeting of The Nordic Rheology Society June 1, 2018 INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE S REPORT FOR 2017 2018 The AERC 2017 in Copenhagen again set the NRS on the international map. The international rheology community has given much positive feedback on the well organised conference and the hospitality of the NRS. The International Committee on Rheology (ICR) held a meeting in Copenhagen during the AERC 2017 and decided to move the planned ICR congress from 2024 to 2023 in order to avoid overlap with ICTAM Congress which attracts especially American rheologists. The ICR congresses alternate between the Americas, Asia/Pacific Rim and Europe/Africa. The ICR 2023 will be held in Europe and the national and regional societies of the ESR were asked to submit bids which sparked substantial activity throughout rheology Europe. There were finally two strong bids from Greece (Athens) and France (Lyon). The members of the ESR Committee voted for these bids, and also for bids for the upcoming AERCs 2021 and 2022 at the Committee meeting in Sorrento in April. The upcoming international meetings were decided as 2019 AERC in Portoroz, Slovenia, April 8-11 (decided previously) 2020 ICR in Rio de Janeiro, August 2-7 (decided previously) 2021 AERC in Seville, April 7-9 2022 AERC in Leeds, April 2023 ICR in Athens in August The ESR also welcomed a new member society during the Committee meeting in Sorrento, the Polish Society of Engineering Rheology. Further the ESR has decided to join the NRS initiative for rheology news on social media which will be implemented the coming year. This is beneficial for the NRS in that we will have an increased news flow of relevant rheology activities. International meetings since the latest NRS Annual Meeting have included two ESR Executive Council meetings in Naples and in Sorrento in connection with the AERC. Mats Stading ICR Representative of the NRS Past President of the ESR
