Summit Academy High School JR. CHEER (1 st -8 th grade) 2018-2019 Tryout Packet PARENT MEETING - Monday April 16 th - 6:00-7:00 PM Parent meeting in the SAHS Cafeteria. All students wishing to tryout must attend with one parent or guardian in order to tryout. TRYOUT DATES - Tuesday April 17 th Registration MUST BRING- All tryout packet information (list below) - 1 st -5 th grade 3:30-4:00-6 th -8 th grade 5:30-6:00 - Tuesday April 17 th Clinic (Dance, cheer and tumbling) - 1 st -5 th grade 4:00-6:00-6 th -8 th grade 6:00-8:00 - Wednesday April 18 th Tryouts (Wear dark shorts and a white top that is fitted and covers the stomach area) - 1 st -5 th grade 4:00-6:00-6 th -8 th grade 6:00-8:00 Teams will be posted on the SAHS Cheer website the next morning All tryouts and clinics are closed to the public TRYOUT PACKET INFORMATION The following forms are to be completed handed to coaches at the sign in table on Tuesday April 17th - Application (with attached picture of cheer candidate that fits in the designated space The picture is used for judges to identity candidates more easily) - Consent and Acknowledgement Form - Medical insurance information & release - Signed Transportation Form - $20 tryout fee TRYOUT GUIDELINES - Hair pulled back, we must see your face (pony tails) - No gum, acrylic nails, or jewelry (nails must be short) - Candidates must have stomachs and chest area covered at all times - Comfortable lace up shoes should be worn at all times - Wear dark bottoms and a white fitted top the day of the Tryout (April 18 th ) TRYOUT CLINICS, PROCEDURES AND OBJECTIVES - Candidates will go over: Jumps, Cheer, Basic Tumbling and a Dance. - A panel of judges consisting of SAHS Cheerleaders as well as the cheer coaches are present at the tryouts. (no outside viewers please) - Cheerleaders will also be judged based on the following: Attitude, teamwork, work ethic, ability to follow directions and being coachable.
ELIGIBILITY - Candidates and one parent/guardian must attend pre-tryout meeting on April 16 th - Candidates must have required documents signed by a parent/guardian in order to participate. (Turned in on April 17 th ) - Candidates must be in good health and must work to maintain good health in order to cheer. If there are injuries that will keep the athletes for performing abilities, consider your tryout. -Candidates must be committed to the team and practices. If a team member is missing many practices, it will compromise the team. SQUADS This year (dependent on numbers that tryout) we will have 3 teams divided up according to age and ability. The teams will look as follows: A team Grades 6 th -8 th grade B team Grade 6 th -8 th grade C team Grades 1 st -5 th grade Teams will be coached by the SAHS cheerleaders under the direction and guide of a SAHS coach. COMMITMENT Participating in cheerleading is an exciting and fun experience. However, it requires time and commitment by all members, not only during the school year but the summer as well. If you are going to participate on the cheer squad it is important to know that cheer needs to be made a priority. Cheerleading is a team sport and we plan to stunt a lot. If there is just one person missing from practice it prevents the whole team from being able to stunt. FINANCIAL COMMITMENT/FUNDRAISERS -The approximate cost for cheerleader is below and under the cheer constitution. We will have a select few small fundraising opportunities that will help offset the costs. A updated payment plan will be sent out after tryouts. Please keep track of all payments, so all money can be accounted for. The first payment of $100 is due April 23 rd at the follow up parent meeting. The last payment must be made before the teams 1 st game in August. No gear will be given to your athlete if the fee has not been paid. Approximate cheer cost is $450 and includes: Tryout fee $20 (Due the day of tryouts on April 17 th ). Uniform, warmups, 2 camp gear outfits, poms, bows, shoes, coaches fee, competition fees. The price will do down depending on fundraisers. There will be a monthly Tumbling fee of $25 due by the 1 st of the month ($10 late fee if not paid by the 7 th ) TENTATIVE SCHEDULE All the following date are required - Monday April 23 rd Parent Meeting, $100 Payment Due (1 st -4 the grade 6:00-7:00 / 5 th -8 th grade 7:00-8:00) - Required Stunting Clinic (Jr. High only) May 16 th 3:00pm-7:00pm @ Bountiful High School (There will be a bus) - Practice April 30 th / May 14 th, 21 st 6:20-7:45 - Cheer Camp (learning the competition routine) June 4 th -6 th 11:00am-12:30 (at SAHS) - Summer practices - June 11 th, 18 th, 25 th @ 11:00am-12:30 - July off (work on cheers on youtube) - Practice for games beginning July 30 th and 13 th 11:00am-12:30 - August 6 th -8 th 2:00-3:30 Practice for Blue and Gold game (Friday August 10 th ) / Parade (August 11 th ) Starting August 20 th 1 st -5 th grade practices TUMBLING Mondays 6:30-7:30pm / PRACTICE Tuesdays 4:30-5:30pm 5 th -8 th grade practices PRACTICE Tuesdays 5:30-7:00pm / TUMBLING Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm Football Games start in September and will go through beginning of November / Basketball games will be home games in November/December. Local Competitions start on Saturdays in October and go until January. (We will do 2-3 competitions)
SUMMIT ACADEMY JR. CHEER CONSITITION Summit Academy Jr. Cheer team members should demonstrate high standards, good sportsmanship and promote the development of good character. All team members are expected to carry themselves in a manner which brings pride to their school. Cheerleading is a privilege and it s important that cheerleaders and their parents be aware of the necessary rules, expectations and goals it takes to be a Summit Academy Cheerleader. 1) PURPOSE The PRIMARY FUNCTION of the cheerleading squad is to support interscholastic athletics and to promote school spirit in a positive way. The Jr Cheer team will cheer for Summit Academy Jr. High Football and Basketball teams. The Jr Cheer team will also participate in local cheerleading competitions. 2) RESPECT Cheerleaders will be expected to respect coaches and team members at all times. Team members are also required to respect all religions, races, disabilities and backgrounds. There will be no swearing, obscene gestures, and inappropriate behavior at any cheerleading activities or while representing the cheer squad. Cheerleaders (if applicable) will be required to follow all cheer accounts so their social media can be monitored. A high level of respect and class on all social media sites must be maintained at all times. Bullying (cyber or otherwise) is not allowed. Cheerleaders will be positive leaders, set good examples, display a positive attitude and work to develop a sense of pride at all times. 3) EFFORT/TUMBLING/STUNTING Cheerleaders will engage in cheering, dancing, tumbling, and stunting while on the squad. The Summit Academy cheer squad adopts and executes a comprehensive safety program including conditioning and effective-spotting techniques at all times. Weekly tumbling classes will be required. 4) ABSENCES/TARDIES Excused absences consist of: extreme illness, death or funeral, weddings or school excused activity. If a cheerleader is sick and cannot attend to practices/games the cheerleader and their parents must inform coaches. Doctors appointments need to be scheduled around practices and games. Cheerleaders need to strive are to be on time to events, practices and games. 5) PRACTICES/GAMES/ATTIRE Practices will take place: 1 st -5 th grade - TUMBLING Mondays 6:30-7:30pm / PRACTICE Tuesdays 4:30-5:30pm 5 th -8 th grade - PRACTICE Tuesdays 5:30-7:00pm / TUMBLING Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm All practices/games will be set on a monthly calendar and will be available anytime to view on the SAHS cheer website under Jr. Cheer. Cheerleaders must come to practices wearing workout gear, with hair up, lace up shoes on and no jewelry or long nails. All clothing must cover stomachs and behinds. Game attire (hair and bows) will be determined on the monthly calendars. No bra straps should be seen when wearing your cheer uniform. Socks must be white ankle socks navy spankies. 6) FINANCIAL COMMITMENT Each cheerleader will be responsible for expenses for being selected for the cheerleading squad. There will be fundraisers to help off set the costs. These expenses (approximate) include but are not limited to the following: -Tryout fee $20 (Due the day of tryouts on April 17 th ) -Uniform, warmups, 2 camp gear outfits, poms, shoes, bows $250-300 -Coaches fee $50 -Competition fee $100 -Tumbling fee (monthly) - $25 - Optional Bag $25-50 If a cheerleader is dismissed from cheer or quits, no cost will be refunded and the remaining balance in the account must be paid in full.

No matter how careful the participant and coach are, or what landing surface is used, the risk cannot be totally eliminated. The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death from landing or falls on the back, neck, or head. I understand these risks and will not hold Summit Academy High School or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time.
