This weekend the Colonials open CHA action against Wayne State. This will mark the second and third meetings between the two clubs so far in the 2007-08 season. Quick State of the Night: After starting the 2007-08 season on fire on special teams, converting at 21.4% on the power-play and killing 10-of-11 penalties things changed last weekend as RMU gave up eight power-play goals versus Wisconsin and went 1-for-16 on the power-play. The Colonials power-play percentage now sits at 13.3%, while they have killed 19-of-28 penalties, thats 67.8%. The Series: The Colonials snapped a four-game losing streak two-weeks ago on Oct. 13, 2007, at the Nye Frontier Classic, against Wayne State. RMU went 0-4 against the Warriors last season, including a sweep the last weekend of the season, while the Colonials were battling for the top spot in the CHA tournament. Robert Morris won the game on Oct. 13, 4-1, clinching the Nye Frontier Classic. Jason Towsley tallied three-points, RMU vs. Wayne State including one goal and two assists, on his way to Series Record 3-7-3 being named CHA and InsideCollegeHockey.com First Meeting 11/12/2004 Player of the Week. Christian Boucher played Last Meeting 10/13/2007 two and a half periods stopping all 19 shots he Current Streak Won 1 faced. Schooley vs. WSU 3-7-3 Quotes for the Notes - A word with Coach Schooley On last weekend at Wisconsin... Wisconsin is a very good hockey team. They are very skilled, but we were in both games in the second period. We know heading into this weekend we need to play a lot better. On this weekend against Wayne State... Wayne State is a very young hockey club. They gave us a very hard fought game a few weeks ago in Alaska and I expect nothing less this time around from a Bill Wilkinson coached team

Head Coach Derek Schooley In his fourth season behind the bench of the Robert Morris program, head coach Derek Schooley believes that his team is ready to regularly compete for a College Hockey America title as well as with other teams around the nation. After two successful seasons getting the program started, Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third place finish in the CHA in 2006-07. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime. RMU defeated Bemidji State, 7-5, in the CHA Tournament quarterfinals. Schooley s Colonials have improved every year during the programs first three seasons. In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished 8-21-4 overall record. Many people thought that anything other than a zero in the win column that season, would be a surprise for the first year team. However, Schooley and his staff would not accept any excuses from the Colonial players and pushed his team to vie for a CHA Championship and a NCAA Tournament berth. In his fourth season, those expectations for the program have not changed. Schooley came to Robert Morris after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at the United States Air Force Academy. He spent his first four seasons with the Falcons as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2002-03 season. While at Air Force, Schooley coached a defensive unit that broke the school record for goals against average in two of the last four seasons. The team s goals against average of 2.91 in 2000-01 broke the record of 3.18 set a year earlier. Along with leading the defense at Air Force, Schooley assisted with nation-wide recruiting efforts. Prior to Air Force, Schooley spent a year as an assistant coach at Cornell during the 1997-98 season. He started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. During the 1989-90 season, Schooley played for current Air Force head coach Frank Serratore with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). The Lancers claimed both the regular season (Anderson Cup) and playoff (Clark Cup) championships, and Schooley was named the 1989-90 Defenseman of the Year. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a bachelor s of science degree in communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tallied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 1993-94 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22. Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington (W. Va.) Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) championship. During the 1996-97 season, Schooley played for both the Pensacola Ice Pilots and the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL. In 2001, Schooley was a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14 and Select 15 Festival. He also has spoken at USA Hockey youth coaching clinics in Boulder, Colo., Jackson Hole, Wyo., Phoenix, Ariz. and Dallas, Texas. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assistant coach with the 2002 United States Under-18 Select Team which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich. They are the proud parents of daughter Kaitlyn,Brendan and Taylor. The Magic of Four Four has been a magic number for the Colonials in their first three-plus seasons of Division I hockey. As in scoring at least four and giving up less than four. When the Colonials reach four goals, they are 23-7-3 (.742) alltime. If they hold opponents to less than four goals, the are 29-19-7 (.591). On the other side of the coin, when RMU scores less than four, they are just 2-38-2 (.071). When opponents score four of more, the Colonials are just 3-40-2 (.088). Home, Sweet, Home! The RMU Island Sports Center has become an unwelcome destination for visiting teams as the Colonials went 7-5-1 last season and are 17-21-6 overall and 15-12-3 over the last twoseasons. The Colonials will play 15 home games this season, including exhibition contests against Ryerson and the USA U-18 Team. Talking About the Road Robert Morris is 15-37-3 on the road all-time, going 6-12-1 in 2006-07, 4-12-1 in 2005-06 and 5-11-1 in 2004-05. RMU never went more than three-games during the 2006-07 season with out picking up a victory on the road, a vast improvement over the 12-game road winless streak during the 2005-06 season that ended with a 3-2 win at Air Force (2/24/06). The Colonials will play 20 games away from the RMU Island Sports Center this coming season, including three neutral site games against Boston University, Wayne State and Ohio State. Winning Ways Robert Morris continued to increase its singleseason win total last season. The Colonials won 14-games last season after an almost 50% increase to 12 from the 2004-05 season. The Colonials won only eight-games their first season. Preseason All-CHA Team For the second straight season, Robert Morris has placed a member of its team on the Preseason All-CHA Team. This season however two Colonials were named to the 2007-08 Preseason All-CHA Team. Ryan Cruthers and Chris Kaufman were both tabbed preseason all-cha. Preseason Predictions The Robert Morris University men s ice hockey team was selected to finish second in College Hockey America for the upcoming 2007-08 season. The Colonials received two first-place votes and a total of 13 points overall. Niagara also received two first-place votes, but edged the Colonials by one point overall, receiving 14 total points. Bemidji State (12) received the fifth and final first-place vote, while Wayne State (6) and Alabama-Huntsville (5) rounded out the coaches poll. Friday, Friday, Friday The only day of the week last season RMU held a winning record on was Friday. The Colonials finished with an overall record of 6-5-1 on Friday s. So far in the 2007-08 season, RMU is 1-1 on Friday, defeating Boston University. Feeling Gray Including exhibition games, the Colonials were 3-2 last season when wearing their alternate third jersey. Robert Morris wore the jersey in both games of a two-game home series against Ala.-Huntsville, beating the Chargers Friday night before losing Saturday. They also work the sweater in a 6-0 exhibition win over Penn State (10/8/06) and in a loss to Wayne State (3/2/2007. Last season marked the debut of the team s alternate third jersey, a gray uniform that prominently features the athletic department s new logo. Plenty-o-Penalty Kill The Colonials committed a whopping 249 penalties last season, but still managed to lead the CHA in penalty kill percentage. Robert Morris killed off 82.3% of their opponents power-plays. That 82.3% ranked 32 in the nations however. Aye, Aye Captain! Senior s Rob Cowan, Chris Kaufman and Joel Gasper will serve as team captains for the 2007-08 season. This will mark the fourth-straight season that Cowan has worn the C on his sweater, while Kaufman was a captain last year and an assistant captain during the 2004-05 season. Gasper served last season as an assistant captain and will wear the C for the first time this season. Gasper also joins Cowan, Kaufman and Kurt Wright 06 as the only Colonials to ever serve as a captain. Jumble of Seniors Of the 30 players listed on the 2007-08 Robert Morris roster, 14 are seniors, more than all of the other two-classes combined. The 14-member senior class is followed in size by freshman with seven players, sophomore s with six players and juniors with three players. Scheduling Bits The 33-game Robert Morris regular season schedule includes 14 home games and 19 road contests. The Colonials play 12 non-conference contests, plus two exhibition games, in addition to their 20 CHA games. RMU has three games against ECAC teams and one game each against WCHA, CCHA, Hockey East and Atlantic Hockey teams. The Colonials will play five teams for the first time in the programs history this season including Boston University, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Colgate and American International. Robert Morris longest homestand of the season is five games from Oct. 26 through Nov. 16. The Colonials have an eight-game road trip from Dec. 17 through Jan. 26. Olds Friends Four current Colonials were once members of the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Brothers, and defensemen, Rob and Dave Cowan both played for Olds as well as senior forward Brett Hopfe and Parker Burgess. Tri-City Boys Two Robert Morris players spent time with the Tri-City Storm prior to becoming a part of the Colonials. Senior David Boguslawski and sophomore Jake Obermeyer played for the Storm. Spanning the Continent The Colonials roster has players from all over North America with 12 different states or provinces represented. Not surprisingly, Alberta leads the way with seven players followed by Ontario with six. Minnesota has four players, Pennsylvania has three, two are from California and Illinois, while British Columbia, New York, Colorado, Michigan, Texas and Washington all have one player on the Colonials roster. On the Road Again The Colonials open the 2007-08 season with four straight games away from the RMU Island Sports Center. They first travel to Anchorage-Alaska for the Nye Frontier Classic where they will play #9 Boston University and Wayne State. RMU will then travel to Madison, Wisc. to take on the 17th ranked Badgers.
