Identify significant hazards t drivers. 2. Identify methds fr eliminating distractins while driving. 3. Identify at least 3 hazards leading t MSD s. 4. Describe wh shuld be invlved in recgnizing, assessing and cntrlling ergnmic hazards. Required Training Materials Rm with flipchart r whitebard (if available) Markers (fr flipchart) / Pencils (fr test) Attendance sheet Safety Tpic blank test sheets (enugh fr all participants) (Recmmended) Cpy f the Occupatinal Health & Safety Act r cpy f the Pcket Extract Facilitatin Tips Read the entire safety tpic t yurself, including the test questins, at least nce befre delivering it t yur emplyees. Standing while yu talk is preferable t sitting it s mre engaging and helps the listener fcus n the tpic Speak a little slwer and a little luder than feels cmfrtable fr yu: we tend t talk t quickly and quietly when standing in frnt f a grup. After asking a questin, pause fr a few secnds t give peple a chance t respnd Fllw the Safety Tpic cntent t stay n track Recrds Management Attendance sheet: Have everyne sign the attendance sheet with their name and IEC number Test sheets: Ensure emplyees fill in the Name, Date, Cmpany and IEC # sectins n their test sheet Cllect cmpleted test sheets and file them in accrdance with yur cmpany prcedure Uplad Recrds: Use yur attendance sheet t uplad training recrds t the IEC database Kick-ff Begin the sessin by explaining that this is the mnthly safety tpic which every cntractr in the Chemical Valley will deliver t their emplyees. 1 f 4
148 Safety Tpic 2012 Octber CON-TRN2.148 Revisin #: 0 Page 2 f 5 SAFETY TOPIC DELIVERY PART 1: DRIVING HAZARDS FACTS The fur main causes f vehicular deaths and injuries n Ontari rads are distracted driving, aggressive driving, failure t use restraint devices, and driving while impaired (surce: OPP) In 2011, 73 wrkers under prvincial jurisdictin lst their lives in wrk-related mtr vehicle accidents (surce: WSIB) HAZARDS The fllwing are sme f the driving hazards yu are likely t encunter while perating any type f vehicle n the jb, whether n municipal/prvincial radways r radways n and inside plant prperty. Intersectins: Natinally, 28% f vehicular fatalities and 40% f serius injuries ccur at intersectins. Intersectin accidents are caused by rlling stps; failing t yield right f way; hidden intersectins; running an amber light; excessive speed; fllwing t clsely; and driver distractin Railway Crssings: 17% f all railway accidents are the result f a cllisin between a train and pedestrians r vehicles trying t crss the tracks. Trespassing accidents, which invlve peple (mstly pedestrians) wh are either nt authrized t be n the railway r wh fail t give rights-f-way in ther wrds, beating the train remain the leading cause f crssing accidents Bicycles: Bicycles present a significant hazard because they can be difficult t see frm a mving vehicle. On plant sites, the majr cause f bicycle accidents cme frm cyclists nt fllwing the flw f traffic and frm cyclists driving in areas meant nly fr pedestrians (E.g.: a sidewalk r thrugh an perating unit) Distracted Driving: Distracted driving is defined as engaging in any secndary activity which takes the peratr s attentin away frm driving and can include: eating while driving, searching fr smething in the car, r using any type f hand-held cmmunicatins/entertainment device. In 2010, OPP reprted 7,733 cllisins as a result f inattentive/distracted driving resulting in 35 deaths and ver 1,000 injuries Als in 2010, OPP charged mre than 8,500 drivers under the Highway Traffic Act fr using a hand-held device while driving
148 Safety Tpic 2012 Octber CON-TRN2.148 Revisin #: 0 Page 3 f 5 SAFE PRACTICES Q: Based n the hazards just reviewed, what safe driving practices will help prevent accidents and injuries? A: Wear yur seat belt: Accrding t the mst recent infrmatin available thrugh Transprt Canada, 51% f all peple either killed r seriusly injured in mtr vehicle accidents were nt wearing their seatbelt at the time f the accident. Bttm line seat belts save lives. When using any type f vehicle that cmes equipped with seat belts, and that includes frk lifts, ALWAYS wear yur seat belt. Fllw the rules f the rad: Obey all traffic rules and psted traffic signs n public rads Fllw all rules f the rad fr each site as described in site-specific training Fllw the practice f STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! at all railway crssings Minimize distractins: Adjust seat, mirrrs, steering wheel and climate cntrls prir t perating the vehicle D nt perate any hand-held devices while the vehicle is in peratin if necessary, safely pull the vehicle ver t a full stp befre answering a call r text SUMMARY OF DRIVING HAZARDS A driver s first respnsibility is the safe peratin f the vehicle. Anything that may get in the way f that respnsibility is a distractin and must be addressed either prir t perating the vehicle r after bringing the vehicle t a safe stp n the side f the rad. Intersectins, railway crssings, and bicycles present significant hazards t drivers pay particular attentin when appraching these hazards. T mitigate driving hazards, always practice safe driving habits, including wearing yur seat belt and beying all psted traffic signs and rules f the rad. PART 2: ERGONOMICS DEFINITIONS Ergnmics: The science f designing equipment and devices t fit the wrk t the wrker. Musculskeletal Disrders (MSD s): Injuries and disrders that affect muscles, tendns, ligaments, jints, nerves, and/r bld vessels. FACTS Ontari Ministry f Labur 2010 Statistics MSD claims MSD s are the mst cmmn injury in Ontari wrkplaces and accunt fr: 42% f all injuries invlving lst time at wrk 40% f new claim csts, and 43% f days lst at wrk
148 Safety Tpic 2012 Octber CON-TRN2.148 Revisin #: 0 Page 4 f 5 The design and rganizatin f wrk can ptentially cause harm t the bdy by placing stresses and strains n the musculskeletal system. Examples f MSD injuries include: Herniated disc Muscle sprains and strains Tendnitis Carpal Tunnel Syndrme Bursitis Tennis Elbw (epicndylitis) CORRECTING ERGONOMIC HAZARDS RECOGNIZE Identify the lcatin and type f MSD hazards in yur wrk area. Q: What can yu lk at in the wrkplace t help identify MSD hazards? A: Wrkstatin design (seating, standing surfaces, cmputer statins, placement f equipment) Equipment and tls design (grip, shck absrptin, balance and trque) Envirnmental factrs (temperature, lighting, and vibratin) Wrk rganizatin (rtatin f repetitive tasks) Dcumentatin f previusly reprted hazards (wrkplace inspectins) ASSESS Determine the degree f each ergnmic hazard by assessing the fllwing against cmpany s standards: Repetitin, Psture, and Frce Q: Hw wuld yu determine the degree f hazard with Repetitin? A: Assess the frequency, speed and duratin f the repetitive task Q: Hw wuld yu determine the degree f hazard with Psture? A: Lk fr awkward bdy psitins, sustained r static psture, and verextended reaching Q: Hw wuld yu determine the degree f hazard with Frce? A: Find ut hw much frce is required t perfrm a task and the duratin the frce is exerted befre a break CONTROL Cntrl the hazard, preferably at the surce. Sme cntrls t cnsider include: Design wrkstatins and wrk prcesses using ergnmic principles Use well maintained equipment and tls that will decrease frce r awkward psitining Prvide lifting devices t eliminate heaving lifting Mechanize a repetitive task r prcess SUMMARY OF ERGONOMICS MSD injuries are preventable! In preventing MSDs frm happening in the wrkplace, yu must recgnize, assess and cntrl the hazards that cause them. It is imprtant t include bth the wrker and management during this prcess. Keep in mind that the mst knwledgeable persn abut the prblems with a jb is usually the persn ding the jb.
