Equipment - Chrisleo Botha Club Liaison and Newsletter - John Lees Monthly Game 5 TH March 2017 Oudtshoorn Golf Club Southern Cape Nomads Golf Club The Nomads Creed No man is an island entire of itself; Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; Any man s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind. And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. March 2017 Newsletter Gold Cup Game 26 th March 2017 George Golf Club March was a very full Nomadic month for many of us with two monthly games as well as the National Council Meeting in Nelspruit and the Jock Nationals hosted by Lowveld Nomads at Nelspruit Golf Club. This therefore is a bumper edition. Please take time to read it and appreciate all that your committee are striving to do. We begin with the Oudtshoorn Game at the beginning of the month where we saw 43 Nomads with 2 prospective members and 3 visitors brave the Little Karoo elements. A few comments were made by members as to why we have to travel so far to play on a course that appears to be struggling to maintain high standards. What perhaps many do not know is that Oudtshoorn Golf Club is where our Southern Cape Nomads Club was founded in 1995. Part of our mission to furtherance of golf is also to support this type of clubs that need us. So we do have two very important reasons for playing at Oudtshoorn. The club and its staff went out of their way to make us all feel most welcome and for this we thank them sincerely. Who says there is no grass at Ouidtshoorn? A big thank you to Midas Sponsor for the Day!

Captain s Report Match Secretary s Report We had 48 players at Oudtshoorn made up of 44 Southern Cape Nomads, 2 Prospective Nomads and 2 guests. Fellow Nomads, Sunday the 5 th of March was a great day for golf, with the temperatures in Oudtshoorn reaching a high of 32 degrees. Because of the bad drought being experienced in the area the Oudtshoorn course was very dry making the conditions difficult. For their sake we all hope good rains will soon fall. I thank the captain and staff of the club for hosting the Nomads again. I haven't seen such a nice prize table in a long time. I had the privilege of handing Tannah Harris his 15 year tie and Pierre Meyer his 5 year tie. To all the people who made this day possible a big thank you for your efforts and support. Your Captain Marcel (Kattie) Meiring

NOMADS NATIONALS 2017 11 th to 17 th March Pierre Meyer (5 Year Tie) and Tannah Harris (15 Year Tie) receive their ties from Captain Kattie Meiring I am very happy to report on a very successful and happy National Tournament in Nelspruit where unfortunately our socialising skills outplayed our golfing skills. The highest we were ranked during the week was fourth and we ended up sixth out of twelve. Well done to the local Lowveld team which for the first time won the Bert Hunt Trophy. The Old and the New Captains We wish Christo every success in his role as the new Captain of Southern Cape Nomads. He has already made his presence felt and we expect great things of him this year.

It was a wonderful week of Nomadic camaraderie, fun and lots of golf. Our congratulations must go to Andrew Bullen and his team for organising a National Tournament of note. A national tournament is an event that every Nomad should aspire to as it really shows just what Nomads is all about. For your benefit I once again list the criteria used for the selection of the team to travel to Nationals. CRITERIA POINTS 16 Games or less in last 24 months 0 17 to 18 Games in last24 months 1 19 to 20 Games in last 24 months 3 21 to 22 Games in last 24 months 6 23 to 24 Games in last 24 months 10 100% Prize Giving Attendance in last 24 months 3 Point for each of last 3 Nationals Attended 3 (Max) Anniversaries Attended in current year 1 Point per game 1 Seaboard in Current Year 1 South Easter in current year 1 Andrew Mentis Game in current year 3 Point for each International Nationals in current year 1 Past or Present Captain 1 Current year committee member 1 Golforama duties per day 1 Point per Day 10 (Max) As you can see from this list all our activities through the year are important but playing all your games or making up missed games is the most important criterion. Next year Western Province will host the National Tournament at the Royal Cape Golf Club and they have aptly named it the Royal Nationals. We wish Ken Walker, the coordinator and his team, who are already hard at work preparing for the event, every success. Accommodation in Cape Town will be at a premium so get organised early and make sure you have a booking. Hopefully Southern Cape will once again have eighteen spots for the Nationals but that does depend on our attendance at our monthly games. Ruggie our Southern Cape Mascot safely home after attending his 15 th National Tournament The care of our mascot, Ruggie at each National Tournament is the responsibility of the newest Nomad to attend that particular National Tournament. Tim Leibbrandt had that responsibility this year and Ruggie was at every prize giving and dinner at the Southern Cape table. Well done, Tim on a task well executed!

National Council Meeting held in Nelspruit on Saturday 11 th March. With your captain, Marcel I represented Southern Cape at the National Council Meeting. It is always interesting to hear what is going on in Nomads in South Africa as well as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland, Australia and now in Zambia where the newly formed club is rapidly growing from strength to strength. Playing Year One of the decisions that was taken, because of a request from the Captains was to change the playing year back to January to December with our Gold Cup Game being played in December. It means that we shall now have two gold cup games this year with the results for the annual competitions only being over a period of eight months. This will only be the case for this year. Annual General Meeting The AGM will still be held in February and the Captain and committee will remain in office until after Nationals. Continuous Putting The other significant decision which was reached was the dropping of the continuous putting rule. We now putt as normal. Nomad Numbers It was pleasing to see that the numbers of SA Nomads has remained static at around 1600. There is a huge need to increase the numbers of younger members as the average age of Nomads is concerning at 57,2. A suggestion was made that every Nomad should bring one prospective Nomads to at least one monthly game. If only half of them became Nomads our enrolment would go up significantly. So Guys there your challenge! South African Golf Hall of Fame Ken Haldane and I accompanied Ken Walker to the recent SA Seniors Open Tournament where at a function at the banquet Ken Walker on behalf of the National Chairman received the honour of Nomads being inducted into the Hall of Fame. It was a wonderful ceremony and a just reward for many years of service, by Nomads all over the country, to golf. And one of our protégés, Charl Swartzel was third in the Masters! Die Burger 4 th April Another accolade for Nomads was an excellent article in Die Burger on the 4 th April written by Riaan Gerber singing the praises of the Nomads Club of South Africa. Well done to whoever was responsible for it. These small things certainly make one proud of being a Nomad. Southern Cape Nomads Fixtures and Costs Our next fixture is at Kingswood Golf Estate and we are very aware that a number of Nomads were concerned about the prices paid last year. I am delighted to inform you all that Heinrich Frylinck the Kingswood Manager has arranged that we play at members rates and we are most grateful for his gesture. All of our playing courses have now agreed to members rates at our monthly games which will make a huge difference and we thank them all clubs involved.utn CAPE FIXTURES 2017 May 7 th Kingswood June 11 th Knysna July 16 th Fancourt August 5 th Pinnacle Point (Seaboard) August 6 th Mossel Bay September 17 th Plettenberg Bay October 8 th Oudtshoorn November 12 th Goose Valley November 18 th /19 th St Francis (South Easter) December 10 th George 2018 January 21 st Knysna February 18 th Mossel Bay March 25 th George (Gold Cup) 2

I look forward to serving you and working together as we grow the Nomads brand and reputation together in the years ahead. Sincerely in Nomads Christo Langenhoven Captain Southern Cape Nomads ANDREW MENTIS DAY MOSSEL BAY GOLF CLUB 7 TH APRIL 2017 New Captain s Message to the Club In the true spirit and camaraderie of the Nomads Club, my grateful thanks to the Nomads of Southern Cape for entrusting me to the position of Captain. The Southern Cape Branch of Nomads has for many years contributed greatly to the development & wellbeing of golf in our area particularly and nationally. It is my vision to grow Nomads membership going forward and develop our club in all areas. Past difficulties are behind us as we look forward to a prosperous, dedicated Nomadic team whose contributions, I have no doubt, will grow the Nomads reputation and good standing in our community. To my committee, I thank you for your willingness to serve and your support. Together as a team we will strive to uphold the fine traditions and spirit of Nomads Golf. I urge you to take time out this year to get involved and make available your specific talents and skills for the growth of our club and the betterment of those in our community in need. Despite miserable weather at Mossel Bay (and no one is complaining as we need the rain!) Christo Langenhoven, Andrew Mentis Chairman and his committee hosted a wonderful day of golf and fun. Most importantly his efforts raised R15 000 towards his Andrew Mentis Fund. Well done to Christo and his team for Receiving a Service Excellence Award from the Mossel Bay Chamber of Business for their achievement is renovating a home as part of their Andrew Mentis commitment this year. Christo well done on an amazing start to your year as Captain! We are all proud of you and look forward to a special year with you at our helm.

Vice Captain Douw de Lange and Junior Vice Chrisleo Botha with their Captain Christo Yes Steve they were talking about you! Cor with his mates enjoying the Andrew Mentis Day I don t know why he is known as Grumpy! Hiron doing what he enjoys most - introducing our sponsor to a friend! Some of the Knysna contingent at the Andrew Mentis Day After some conversation and drinks, I invited her to my apartment. I couldn't ask her directly if she's was going to stay over so I threw an oblique question at her: "How would you like your eggs in the morning?" The smartass replied: "Unfertilized!" Notice Pierre s five year tie!

Recently seen at George Golf Club Even our Swedish members enjoy Nomads! Our club is in very good hands Tim taking the message to bring in younger members seriously! Have they signed up yet? What a loyal Nomad Castle Lite and Glenbrynth at the same time! Well done Cam! The Godfather of Southern Cape Nomads Better than mother s milk! Behind every successful man is a woman!

You thought we had forgotten about your bad round! Unfortunately for you I saved you for the end! Well played Guys! Significant Celebrations 45 Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Tannah and Berti who were married on 20 th March 1972 Two old guys, one 80 and one 87, were sitting on a park bench one morning. The 87-year-old had just finished his morning jog and wasn't even short of breath. The 80-year-old was amazed at the guy's stamina and asked him what he did to have so much energy. The 87-year-old said, "Well, I eat Jewish rye bread every day. It keeps your energy level high and you'll have great stamina with the ladies. You'll feel like 40 again!" So, on the way home the 80-year-old stopped at the bakery. As he was looking around, the saleslady asked if he needed any help. He said, "Do you have any Jewish rye bread?" She said, "Yes, there's a whole shelf of it. Would you like some?" He said, "I want five loaves." She said, "My goodness, five loaves! By the time you get to the 3rd loaf, it'll be hard." He replied, "I can't believe it. Everybody knows about this shit but me." A very Happy Birthday to the following who celebrated Significant Birthdays In March: David Eveleigh 35 Mannfred Swigelaar 40 Peet Stander 50 Luc Meeusen 60 In April: Christo Langenhoven 45 Claude Wilson 55 Wouter Kotze 55 Chris Barnard 60 Boetie vd Berg 65 Tom Gray 75 I was standing at the bar at an International Airport when this small Chinese guy walks in, stands next to me, and starts drinking a beer. I asked him, "Do you know any of those martial arts things like Kung-Fu, Karate or Ju-Jitsu?" He says "No, why the f*** you ask me that? Is it because I am Chinese?" No", I said, "It's because you're drinking my beer, you little prick." Went out last night and got really wasted. I woke up this morning next to a fat old bird who was snoring. So, at least I got home OK.

Husband to wife "Today is a fine day." Next day he says : "Today is a fine day." Again next day, he says the same thing "Today is a fine day." Finally after a week, the wife can t take it and asks her husband "since last week, you are saying this 'Today is a fine day. I am fed up... What s the matter?" Husband : Last week when we had an argument, you said, I will leave you one fine day. I was just trying to remind you..." Two women friends had gone for a girls' night out. Both were very faithful and loving wives, however they had gotten over-enthusiastic on the Bacardi Breezers. Incredibly drunk and walking home they needed to pee, so they stopped in the cemetery. They had nothing to wipe with so one of them thought she would take off her panties and use them. Her friend however was wearing a rather expensive pair of panties and did not want to ruin them. She was lucky enough to squat down next to a grave that had a wreath with a ribbon on it, so she proceeded to wipe with that. After the girls did their business they proceeded to go home. The next day the husband of one of the women was concerned that his normally sweet and innocent wife was still in bed hung over, so he phoned the other husband and said: 'These girl nights have got to stop! I'm starting to suspect the worst. My wife came home with no panties!!' 'That's nothing' said the other husband, 'Mine came back with a card stuck to her ass that said... 'From all of us at the Fire Station... We'll never forget you..''
