Junior co-captain Karley Wester was named one of the Top 25 Finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award for the second straight season on April 13. Wester is the third Notre Dame player in the last four seasons to be considered for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award after being named one of 26 finalists in 215. Irish Claim Crucial ACC Sweep Over Dame junior co-captain Karley Wester. The elder Wester was a top three finalist for the inaugural okies national freshman of the year award in 214. Much as it notched two wins during the first day of play at Tech Softball Park, Notre Dame seemed to have the answer for Virginia Tech. A 13-hit performance, which featured two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, guided the Irish to a 5-3 win on April 17 to complete an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series sweep. Notre Dame secured its second conference sweep of 216 by taking three games against Virginia Tech, outscoring the okies 15-8 during the weekend set. The Irish also finished with a 28-13 overall edge in hits. Bigler, hodes Earn ACC Weekly onors Notre Dame sophomore outfielder Bailey Bigler and senior pitcher Allie hodes served as key components to an undefeated run through the last week of play for the Irish softball team. The ACC recognized the efforts of both Notre Dame standouts on April 18, naming Bigler the ACC Softball Player of the Week and hodes the ACC Pitcher of the Week. The player of the week accolade was the first career ACC weekly honor for Bigler, while hodes was previously tabbed the conference s top pitcher on March 7. Bigler became the seventh Notre Dame selection as the ACC s top weekly player since the Irish joined the conference in 214, while hodes nod was the ninth such citation earned by a member of the Notre Dame pitching staff. The dual awards marked the second time that Notre Dame has swept the weekly ACC softball honors in its three seasons as a conference member. Three-time All-American Emilee Koerner ( 15) and four-time all-conference first team pitcher Laura Winter ( 14) were the final ACC weekly award honorees of the 214 campaign on May 5 of that year. Bigler made a profound impact as the top Notre Dame hitter during a 4- week that included a three-game sweep at Virginia Tech, batting 6-for-9 (.667) against three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week Maggie Tyler, alone. hodes was a stalwart in the circle for Notre Dame during the unbeaten week, going 3- with a.39 EA in three starts. Opponents batted just.153 against hodes in 18 innings, scoring two runs (one earned) while striking out 24 times. Ali Wester Named NFCA Frosh Of The Year Finalist Freshman outfielder/infielder Ali Wester was selected as one of the top 25 finalists for the 216 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I National Freshman of the Year award on April 21. Under Gumpf s guidance the Irish have made 14 consecutive trips to NCAA egionals, claiming four conference tournament titles during that span. Even more, Notre Dame staked the BIG EAST Conference s regular-season championship during her first four seasons on the bench to extend its dominance over league opponents. The Irish hoisted the regularseason hardware again in 21, 211 and the program s final year as a conference member in 213 before transitioning to the Atlantic Coast Conference prior to the 214 campaign. The Notre Dame coaching staff has received seven prominent honors during Gumpf s tenure, being tabbed as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mideast egion Coaching Staff of the Year in 22 and 24, the NFCA Mid-Atlantic egion Coaching Staff of the Year in 214 and the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year in 22, 24, 211 and 213. Gumpf has a career record of 625-241-1 (.721) in her 15 seasons at Notre Dame, placing her among the elite skippers in the NCAA. Gumpf joined legendary fencing coach Michael DeCicco and all of Fame women s basketball coach Muffet McGraw as the only varsity athletics mentors to win 6 or more games during their Notre Dame tenures with a 5-1 victory over Central Florida on Feb. 26, 216. Gumpf reached the summit as the all-time winningest Irish softball/baseball coach after surpassing longtime baseball skipper Jake Kline (1934-75) with her 559th career win against Missouri on Feb. 27, 215. Gumpf also ranks in the top 2 alltime in winning percentage among all active NCAA Division I softball coaches with a career clip over.7. Gumpf became the program s all-time winningest coach with her 378th victory at Notre Dame when the Irish posted a 1- victory over Illinois State in the 21 NCAA Championship. Win No. 4 came in the form of a 9- five-inning win over Providence in April of 211. Gumpf s milestone win came behind a combined shutout from the circle by pitchers Laura Winter and Jody Valdivia. During Gumpf s tenure, 14 different Notre Dame players have earned NFCA All-America honors, with Andrea Loman (22-3), Megan Ciolli (24-5) and Emilee Koerner (213-15) being recognized as multi-time All-Americans. Koerner, the 215 ACC Player of the Year, became the first player in program history to earn three All-America citations by being named to that season s NFCA All-America third team. The Irish have also produced 57 NFCA all-region performers, six conference players of the year, four conference pitchers of the year, two conference freshman of the year selections, 92 allconference recipients and one NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year finalist since 22. Prior to her collegiate success in Lincoln, Gumpf enjoyed an outstanding prep career with Gordon s Panthers, one of the most dominating Amateur Softball Association teams in Southern California.
