So any questions you might have, let us know so we can get the answers in the next newsletter. April Showers bring May Flowers, and the Rumble of Harleys. What, that s not the way that jingle goes? I know I have heard the rumble in April, mostly in my head, nevertheless, it is that time of year. Yes, Summer is upon us, even if Mother Nature is not in 100% agreement. I, along with my lovely fellow lady rider, and a friend have already hit the road on a 7- day vacation. Yes, you read correctly, vacation. That is if you consider riding 2800 miles in a week from Quincy to Galveston, TX and back a vacation. I do, and it had set the fever a burning. I am amp d and ready for all the fine Quincy riding events to start. Last month I asked if anybody had visited the revised TNT website to view the TNT calendar, which incorporates events for all the area riding groups. As I stated then, all the area River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group Road Captain Report--- ---Jim Wolf groups will use the same calendar. What I failed to report was that each group has one appointed person that I would call the head calendar dude or dudet as it were. I have agreed to be the HOG chapter designated dude. The main duties are to inform the TNT activity representative (Donna Allen) of the details, changes, updates or any other pertinent data that concerns a HOG event. She will then keep the calendar up to date. Yes, I know there was some confusion about where last month s HOG Waller was going to be. Let s just blame that one on Greg, Bill, Sammy, Kate, Betty or anybody else but me, and let us start fresh from this point on. If you see an inaccuracy or a lack of information in regards to any HOG event on the calendar or for that matter not on the calendar, then please notify me either by email jwolf78@gmail.com or What s Happening at TNT--- ---Bryan Smith FROM YOUR DEALERSHIP TNT ACTION SPORTS phone, 217-316-2597. I will now continue with upcoming events. May s HOG Waller is on the 4 th, being held at TNT. Start time for social hour is 6:00 pm with the meeting starting at 7:00 pm. June s HOG Waller will be at the Warsaw Brewery. For June s meeting, look for a group ride leaving from TNT. As always, an email will be sent out with details. The first ride of the season is the Shriners Poker Run. It is always a good event to support. As with every year, The HOG chapter will provide volunteers to man the sign up table at TNT and the sign in table at the Dock. Sign up from 9:00am to 1:00pm, last bike in at 6:00pm. On the weekend of May 21 st, is the annual Abate May Awareness event. As in previous years, this will include a poker run, bike show, band, etc. This is not a HOG event, but the (continues on page 5) Hopefully, you read this newsletter in time to remind you that since Spring is in the air--it s time for TNT S OPEN HOUSE! There will be great deals, displays, food, fun, and entertainment--be sure to come by and visit us! (If you read this article after the last weekend in April, be sure to check our pics & postings from the event on Facebook. As the warmer months get closer, the calendar will get fuller, so please check out our website--and if you have questions regarding a specific HOG event, Jim Wolf is the man to ask. If it s about a different event we have posted, come on in or give us a shout! Our Mass Emails are another way we ll keep you informed of the most current info we have on various events, sales and other happenings- be planning for some upcoming summer fun. We ll send them to Dave and he ll get them out to you. Thanks for all your support and we re looking forward to a great Spring and Summer! Donna Bryan
Volume 23, Issue 5 Page 5 The Safety Corner Sherwood Brant No one enjoys riding in the rain and no one really wants to start a ride while it is raining, but there are things that one can do to be prepared for riding in the rain should it start while on a ride or a bike trip. ] First, you should choose a good rainsuit. A good rainsuit will serve two purposes. First, it should keep you dry. Look for features such as folding material at the zipper in the coat, stirrups on the pants, a snug fit around the neck and durable material to withstand the wind. Second, the suit should increase your visibility to other drivers. Rain brings a decrease in vision of other drivers and anything you can do to bring attention to yourself will certainly increase your chances of returning home unscathed. Be sure all the lights on your bike are in working order. If possible, carrying spare bulbs and fuses would be a good idea. Another thing to consider on your bike are the tires. If any wear bands are showing, it is time to consider replacement. It is documented that one of the major reasons for hydroplaning is worn tires. Proper tread depth and tire pressures, slowing down and riding in the tracks of other vehicles will help reduce the chance of hydroplaning. If you should ever feel that you are hydroplaning, do not use the brakes. Let off the throttle and let the bike slow naturally. If it starts to rain on your scenic ride, pull off the road as soon as you can find a dry place to put on your suit. Also, this will keep you off the road during the first 15 minutes when the most slippery conditions exist. When the water first enters the pores of the road, oil rises to the surface, thus the additional rain will wash the oil off the roads. Also you may want to use an alternate route. Those twisting rolling roads aren t as much fun in the rain with wet roads as if it was a bright sunny day. The straighter highways might be the wiser choice, since traction would be better. So, be aware of hydroplaning, reduce your speed, increase your following distance, taking curves more slowly and increase your scanning. (Article written by Robert Vaughn was used in the writing of this article.) Be safe, I want to see all of you again. Sherwood Jim Wolf (Continued from page 4) purpose is to bring awareness of motorcycles to the minds and eyes of everybody on the roads. Upcoming in June, the fun continues with the IL State HOG Rally (9 th -11 th ). I know a few of us are going up to Rockford on Thursday the 8 th, returning home on Saturday. Further down the road, is our hosting of the HOG chapter from Sweden. I have been in contact with their leader (Dave) and the group will be traveling from Springfield to Savanna, IL through Quincy. So, as of right now, on Saturday, the 3 rd of September, we will meet this group of about 17 bikers in Springfield. We will lead them down to Alton for Lunch at Fast Eddies, then back up to Quincy. Maybe even refreshments at one of the watering holes on the Mississippi River. Can t come to Quincy without seeing The Big Muddy. Then on Sunday they are planning on continuing up to Savanna to see Poopies. I would like to see how many of you would be willing to accompany them as far as Burlington, IA to have lunch before sending them on their way. Later that month, Dave will bring another group of riders from Sweden pass though Quincy. This time it falls on Wednesday, the 28 th. So, we thought that October s HOG Waller would be moved up a week, so we can host our guests during our HOG meeting. I expect there will be many of you that will take this opportunity for a little cultural exchange. So, that about wraps things up for this month. See you out there on the road. Assistant Director John Kladstrup By now, you are aware that the 2012 IL State HOG Rally will be in Rosemont, in the Chicago area. I will be very surprised if the 2013 state rally isn t a rolling rally. There was a lot of interest expressed in this type of rally. These types of rallies are catching on in many states, and according to Leah, people seem to like them. The rolling type rally allows participants to choose between one of more locations to attend, depending on where you live, how much time you have, etc. Although not scheduled yet, there is some interest in having a weekly dinner ride or two, and a breakfast ride. If you have any suggestions for these, please let me or any of the other officers know. I plan to put together a breakfast ride sometime in the next month or so. Once scheduled, you will be informed by email. Also don t forget to register for the 2011 state rally if you haven t done so yet. With that, ride safe! John Ride The Rumble To Rockford Are you getting the riding fever? Have you walked by the bike to stroke the leather? Sat on her (or him for you lady riders) to just remember the rush of the ride?
