A warm welcome to Wayne Thorne and everyone from Larkhall Athletic, and many thanks to them for agreeing to bring this fixture forward. It will be the first time that The Larks have met us in a Southern League game at Cossham Street. Merthyr Town s progress in the FA Trophy would have meant a blank date and they now come to us on Tuesday 6 th January 2015. Our 5-1 thrashing of Bishops Cleeve, with Lewis Powell rattling home FOUR goals, was the first time a Mangotsfield player had scored four in a match since DAVID SEAL in 2005. (He gunned down Corby Town and it was the second time that David had scored four in his Mangotsfield career). Lewis Powell has now recorded three hattricks this season and his 22 goals have made a few clubs take notice. Reeko Best scored the 5 th goal against The Mitres. We followed this with the 1-3 home defeat to Cirencester Town in the GFA Senior Cup, ending our hold on the Trophy, although it was hardly surprising when you consider our results against The Centurions in recent years. Our trip to Bashley was washed out by the weather and the game has been re-arranged for Tuesday 9 th December 2014. A Coach will be running. (Leaving at 4pm). Being the underdogs, there were high hopes of an upset and whilst the scoreline shows a 0-2 defeat, it does not tell the whole story. Mitchell Page returned from injury, and although we were unable to use Karim Rendall, there was a positive performance from everyone and with a little luck, we would have forced a replay. We travelled to Sholing last weekend without Matty Collins, who has signed for Hungerford Town and Omar Lindsay, who has been released by the club for disciplinary reasons. Had we played the first 45 minutes as we had approached the second-half, we would most likely have bagged a point, but it was largely a disappointing & rather lacklustre performance and leaves us with a daunting second half to the campaign. No one can fault our commitment and effort, but a succession of long-term injuries to key players and several players having moved on, it means that we have rarely been able to field a settled side. We most definitely have lost our way. We face a difficult December and January looks none too promising either, so let s hope we can get back on track today! The FA Trophy trip to Edgar Street Hereford, was eagerly anticipated, as we have never met the club in any competition before. However, it was quickly pointed out that it was not the first occasion that the club had played at Edgar Street. MUFC Historian Dave Blackmore was able to tell us that we played there in the 1983/84 season, when under the managerial reign of Ralph Miller, we defeated Pegasus Juniors by the score of 2-1 in an FA Vase 1 st round replay. The clubs had drawn 0-0 at Cossham Street. So that s a little trivia that many of us were unaware of! Well done Dave! RAIN, rain, go away. Come again in June! Okay, that may ruin the cricket season and Wimbledon would be a complete wash-out but we at The NLP HQ are more about the football at this time of year. With the FA Trophy and FA Vase still in the early stages of their competition, some Non-League clubs are already falling behind their league schedule. The last thing they are going to want is to hear the words Match postponed due to waterlogged pitch. With forecasters predicting a mild but wet winter, those words seem to be becoming an all too common occurrence on the results page of the Paper. But what happens when a game is postponed a number of times? Last season Hanwell Town and Ashford United had their FA Vase fourth round game postponed on six separate occasions. It was lucky number seven though for Hanwell as they eventually won 2-1 on a Thursday evening, with Maidstone s 3G Gallagher Stadium pitch lined up if the game could not be played on its seventh time of asking. Hanwell s goal scorer Dominic Rhone told The NLP: We re used to playing Saturdays and Tuesdays so hadn t really prepared for the Thursday night, but that helped us in a way. All we ve been doing in the last few weeks is training so just to go straight into the game helped, rather than thinking about it for another few days. And while seven postponements may seem like a lot, it doesn t even come close to the British record for the amount of times one game is postponed. Back in the icy winter of 1979, the Scottish Cup second-round clash between Inverness Thistle and Falkirk had to be postponed no fewer than 29 times. After the original date for the game was January 6, the clubs had to wait 47 days, with an attempt to play it occurring near on four times a week, until the Kings Mills ground was eventually declared playable, on February 22. The winter of 1962-63 saw a big freeze hit the island, causing havoc on our beautiful game. The FA Cup third round tie between Coventry and Lincoln eventually took place at the 16th time of asking, while fourteen of the other ties suffered ten or more postponements. In the same winter, the clash between Airdrie and Stranraer was busy setting a British record of 33 postponements. For Airdrie it was 34th time lucky as they ran out 3-0 victors. And to show just how bad that winter was, Bolton Wanderers beat Tottenham on December 8. The next competitive match they played? That came on February 16 when they lost 3-2 at Arsenal. One dreads to think what the fixture list would look like, or how many pages of The NLP it would take up after all these postponements. Under the leadership of WAYNE THORNE and LEE COLLIER, two players who have worn the maroon and sky of Mangotsfield United in the past, The Larks won their second Western League Premier Division Championship, and in so doing, have attained promotion to the Evo-Stik League Southern for the 2014/15 season. It is the highest level at which the club have played. They joined the Western League newly-formed Division One in 1976/77 and were crowned Champions in 1988/89, but were not promoted. From 2003/04, they improved their league position each season and were Champions again in 2008/09. This put them into the Premier Division and they won the title in 2010/11, but were not ready for the next step. After finishing 3 rd in 11/12 and 5 th in 12/13, they have now achieved the breakthrough with last season s success of the title again, and success in the Les Phillips League Cup, beating Cribbs 2-0. Larkhall Athletic Football Club dates from 1914. They played just local football. In 1951, after a break through the 1940s the club regained access to its home at Plain Ham, and since then, it has gone from strength to strength, achieving the status in 2004 of a Somerset Premier Club and in 2008, as an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the club rented the Plain Ham match by match. It offered a sloping pitch, 12 sq yd wooden hut for changing and a single tin bath for washing after the match, a nearby stand-pipe providing the water source. In 1962 a cricket team was formed and the club became Larkhall Sports Club. Around the same time, the then Bath City Council granted the club a long lease on the ground at Plain Ham. A small club house was erected in 1965. In 1975 the main football pitch at Plain Ham was levelled to create a pitch suitable for senior football. The club house was doubled in size in 1983 and in 1989 the club purchased adjoining land at Pows Field which has become the home for the cricket section. It also provides a second football pitch which is used primarily for junior football on Sunday. In 1996, aided by a Lottery Grant, the club further extended its club house, enlarging the dressing rooms, incorporating secure storage, a laundry and a kitchen and improving access and facilities for the disabled. Plain Ham was re-levelled in 2004, drainage improved and floodlights installed all with the help of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. At the same time the car park was extended and new floodlights installed on the training area. In 2005, with tremendous financial support from the local community and members past and present, the club completed the purchase of Plain Ham from the Bath and North East Somerset Local Authority. Starting in 2007 the hard standing was increased and was further extended in 2008 to now border three sides of the pitch and incorporate a protected walkway from the dressing rooms. At the same time the existing covered viewing area was tripled in size and 55 seats installed, with more planned. In 2011 the hard standing was further extended to completely surround the pitch. At the same time substantial ground work was undertaken to stabilise the far corner of the pitch: new protective fencing was installed in the bottom corner, new safety rails were constructed in front of the stand, pitch side rails were re-painted as were the green posts, a turnstile was created at the entrance and new lighting was connected. continued FIELD REVIEW -3
Continued.. To address ongoing drainage problems the pitch was gravel banded from side to side. Funding from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund helped towards this work. Late in 2011 we learned that we had been successful in an application for Funding to Sport England for new changing rooms. In 2012 an application to the Football Stadia Improvement Fund was successful, securing 50% of the cost of the project. Funding commitments from the club and friends of the club for the balance of the cost enabled a contract for the construction of new changing rooms. Refurbishment of the clubhouse work started in December 2012. In 2013 work on the clubhouse gathered pace and by the beginning of May the shell of the changing rooms was in place and work could start on refurbishment of the clubhouse. The formal opening of the new facility with guest of honour the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Malcolm Lees, took place on 16 August 2013. Completion of the project has drawn on a wonderful team effort from all sections of the club in order to achieve completion ahead of the new season. The project provides larger changing rooms for players and officials that satisfy the latest FA Grading requirements and a new stairway to the pitch. The clubhouse has been updated to include a hospitality area for visiting officials and a refreshment kiosk for spectators. We trust all of our visitors enjoy the new facilities. On the pitch the first team have a long list of honours, including: the Somerset Senior Cup in seasons in 1975-76 and 2003-04, the Western League First Division Championship in 1988-89 and 2008-09, the Western League Premier Division Championship in 2010-11 and the Western League double Premier Division Championship and Les Phillips Cup in 2013-14. The Larks reached the last 16 of the FA Vase three seasons in succession; in 2012-13 and 2013-14 we went out to the eventual finalists of the competition. In 2008 Larkhall Sports Club was recognised as the BANES Club of the Year by the Chairman of BANES Council and in 2011 LAFC successfully renewed its FA Charter Standard Community Club status following an FA health check. In December 2011 we were selected by our local paper, the Bath Chronicle, as the local sports team of the year; quite an honour given the richness of the local competition. From 2014-15 we will provide a new home for the Bath Petanque Club. In 2011, two of the club s longest serving officials were recognised by the Somerset County FA. Tony Grace received the award of Somerset County FA Volunteer of the Year and Phil Tiley was presented with a Somerset County FA Long Service Award. In 2012 the Somerset FA added Clive Burge to our hall of fame by recognising his Outstanding Contribution to Community Football, one of the top awards available to the County FA. Furthermore, Larkhall Athletic FC was honoured and delighted to be named as the Senior Sports Team of the Year at the Bath Sports Awards in November. The club s first team manager Wayne Thorne was also a finalist in the Sports Personality of the Year category. The award was recognition of the club s on-field success of winning the Western League title and cup double last season, leading to promotion to the Southern League for the first time in club history. These achievements were particularly notable given the near-fatal car accident suffered by Wayne Thorne only days before the 2013-14 season began. Club Chairman Paul Rankin commented that the award is a great boost to the club. FIELD REVIEW -4

Alex is a new signing for the Larks who last played for Westbury and Melksham Town. MATT RALPH Defender; club captain. Ralphy is a classy defender who reads the game better than most. Can play in every position at the back and looks comfortable on and off the ball. DANNY JONES Defender. Dan is a consistent quality performer who can play at centre half or full back. LUKE SCOTT Defender. The Larks Mr Consistent: a highly rated left-back. Scotty is the longest serving Larks player now in his 12th season with the club. JACOB GARDNER Defender. Jake signed for the Larks from Longwell Green last season; a versatile defender with pace who can play as a full-back or centre-half. OLLIE PRICE Defender. A new signing, Ollie is a very experienced centre-half who has played league football at Bristol City and Bristol Rovers as well as in the Southern League for Paulton Rovers, Yate Town, and Mangotsfield, for whom he almost made a ton of appearances! 88(11), scoring 5 goals. MATTHEW SPILLER Defender. A young but composed full back, Matt joined the Larks this season from Winterbourne United. BEN HORAN Midfield. A long-term stalwart in midfield, makes his mark in the side, scoring important goals. JAMIE LYONS Midfield. A key player for the team, capable of turning a game. Can also play upfront. Scored 21 goals last season. ROB HOBBS Midfield. A 2013 signing from Frome Town. Rob has an excellent engine and is very comfortable in possession. A player who made 14 appearances for The Field, scoring once, in 2008/09, after coming to us from Team Bath. ROSS LYE Midfield. Rejoined the Larks from Corsham in summer 2013. Ross brings a lot of energy to the team with his box to box displays. Can also slot in in defence. JOE TUMELTY Midfield. Joe is a new signing for 2014-15 having joined the Larks pre-season from Cinderford Town. A young attacking midfielder with plenty of pace and a good eye for goal. CHARLIE MADDISON Midfield. Charlie is a pacy attacking midfielder who impressed in his first season for the Larks in 2013-14. SCOTT LYE Midfield/Striker; team captain. Signed for the Larks from Chippenham Town where he was highly rated. Has a lot of experience and quality. MATT THORNE Midfielder, who played for Mangotsfield Utd in 2012/13 scoring 6 goals from 32(6) appearances. On a duel registration with Weston-super-Mare. FIELD REVIEW -5

Rejoined the Larks last season after spells at Calne Town and Paulton Rovers. Tyler is a lethal finisher inside the box who notched up almost 50 goals last season. LUKE BRYAN Striker. Luke returned to Plain Ham this season after spells at Yate Town and Bitton. Guaranteed to get on the score-sheet. BRAD NORRIS Striker. Brad is another new signing for the Larks first team, albeit a product of the club s under-18 squad, a young attacker with plenty of promise. ALEX SALSANO A young keeper who recently signed for The Larks having previously played for Cambridge City. STEVE CASEY An experienced centre-half, now in his second season with the club, having been captain at Chippenham Town. CALLUM COOPER Callum, a defender, joined Larkhall this season from Bishop Sutton. RYAN BATTEN Defender who recently signed for the club from Paulton Rovers, having previously had a spell at Gloucester City. WAYNE THORNE Manager. This is Wayne s fourth season at Plain Ham having taken the manager s position in January 2012. Former pro at Swindon Town, with a lot of experience at different levels of the game. Wayne won Western League Manager of the Year in 2014 having steered the Larks to an unprecedented League and Cup double. Made 11(1) appearances for The Field, scoring once, and with his brother Gary, were, and still are, fan favourites. LEE COLLIER Assistant Manager. Lee is in his second season as assistant at the Club but isn't a stranger to the Larks faithful. An excellent coach on the training field after a tremendous career at higher levels. Made 3(3) appearances for Mangotsfield. MATTY BOWN Coach. Matty joined the Larks management team this season. An ex-pro with Brighton & Hove Albion, Paulton Rovers and Weymouth, he brings plenty of experience as ex-first team coach at Chippenham Town. FIELD REVIEW -6

Noticed some amusing stories in a recent edition of The Non League Paper. It was recently the funeral of Gordon Cox, a councillor in Haverhill, Suffolk, who was heavily involved in local football. He had a mischievous sense of humour, perfectly illustrated by a story from his refereeing days, as told by his son Stuart. Taking charge of a match with a player frequently known to cause problems in a game, he found the perfect way to keep him under control. After a foul had been committed, he called the offending player over and asked him if he would like a red or a yellow. Reluctantly, the player opted for yellow, at which point, Cox reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bag of jelly babies all yellow! The rest of the game passed peacefully. It has been said that Americans do not understand football. Disney star, Jake Short certainly has not done the stereotype any favours. He needs to swot up on soccer, and the rather alien concept of relegation, to US sports fans. The teen actor was not happy with the omission of Bristol Rovers from FIFA 15, which features English teams down to League Two. He sent a tweet to game makers EA Sports, asking could you guys please tell me why you have decided to take Bristol Rovers out of FIFA 15? Any explanation would be appreciated. Whether the 17 year old is a Gashead or not, remains a mystery! There was a very interesting article in the recent Sunday Independent about one of our former players DREW SHORE. Born in Poole, Dorset, Drew was on the books of Bristol Rovers from the age of 11 and worked his way up through the system and was called up for England Schoolboys U15s selection along the way. Drew had two years as a full-time pro, and when his first-team debut came, it was in a fierce local derby against Bristol City. It was to be a season of struggle and upheaval for the Pirates in Football League s fourth tier, and relegation to the Conference was only narrowly avoided. Several changes of managers at that time, did not help Drew. Gerry Francis started the campaign, but left at Christmas. Coach Garry Thompson took over, then Phil Bater held the fort for a while before Ray Graydon was installed. The arrival of Graydon promised better things, but assessing Rovers poor season, a culling of staff was announced and Drew was given a short sixmonth contract. He later left, when he realised his future lay elsewhere and joined Bath City. He spent 18 th months at Twerton Park, making over 60 appearances, and then linked up with some former team-mates at Mangotsfield United, under Manager Martyn Grimshaw. Drew spent over two years at Cossham Street, making 66(8) appearances and scoring 10 goals. He now works in the medical profession and for the past three years he has been training to be a cardiac physiologist at Bath RUH and taking degrees in physiological sciences at UWE. Drew is married to Amanda (who is the daughter of Bristol Rovers Chairman Nick Higgs) and have known each other since their schooldays. They have three children Lily-Mae (6), Harley (5) and baby Gracie-Rose. It could be said that marrying the bosses daughter proved to be a good thing but as Drew points out, Nick Higgs was not even on the Board of Bristol Rovers, when he was a player there! A VISIT TO DORCHESTER TOWN Now having been down to Devon & Cornwall for the past dozen or so October half-term breaks visiting clubs like Liskeard, Dartmouth, Porthleven, Falmouth & Bideford in the process this October saw me head south instead for Dorset, as it had been a long time since we d been down that way for any sort of holiday. We were based just outside Weymouth, with Weymouth FC s Wessex Stadium about 2 miles away, so there I was, expecting to watch Weymouth v Cranbourne in a Dorset Senior Cup tie on the Tuesday night (as you do when on holiday) only for Weymouth to be facing an FA Cup replay at Braintree Town instead, so the DSC game was called off. Not so at Dorchester Town, however; they d been hammered 7-1 at home v Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup on the Saturday, so there was no danger whatsoever of their Tuesday night DSC tie v Parley Sports being called off. The weather on that Tuesday had also been absolutely glorious maybe 20 degrees so there really was nothing to worry about on that day. Game on then! So off I went to the DTFC s ground at The Avenue on the south side of Dorchester, about 6 miles north of Weymouth, driving through the car park of the adjacent supermarket the one where every little helps to get into the DTFC car park about 40 minutes before the start. Spoke to the first Dorchester fan I spotted by the gate, who looked at me & then said, Are you a Mangotsfield fan, by chance? and it turns out that I had chatted with him at an Odd Down game a couple of years ago when he was up this way, doing some ground-hopping! It truly is a small world, non-league football! The supermarket connection next door is more than just that though they actually paid for the Dorchester ground to be built, back in 1990! Things like that often happen in planning, though. If a major developer wants their particular proposal to succeed, then they often need to contribute to the surrounding area in other ways. It s called mitigation. In the end, the supermarket company got what they wanted & Dorchester Town got a brand new ground as part of the agreement. It s a nice non-league ground too cover on 3 sides & continental-style floodlights and 3 days earlier, it had been rocking with over 1900 fans inside for the Rovers game. This time, there were 132 there for the Parley Sports game, as you d expect for a low-key county cup game, against a side I d never heard of too! As it turns out, Parley Sports come from a village just north of Bournemouth, near the airport & are in the Dorset Premier League. But back to The Avenue & an unusual story I d forgotten about. This came from the 1993/94 season, when Dorchester suffered from a terrible home record. With only 4 league victories (of a possible 21) at the stadium all season, the Magpies had to rely on their victories on the road to stay in the Southern League Premier Division. The reason for the poor home form was, allegedly, due to a curse placed upon the stadium by a local white witch, following a dispute with the Duchy of Cornwall. After the witch s apparent confession, club chaplain Rev. David Fayle decided to bless the pitch & Dorchester won the following day s home game v Nuneaton Borough 1-0. Whether the curse was real or not, the story did enough to give club officials an appearance on a BBC TV chat show! And what of the Parley Sports game itself then? Well, Dorchester won a lively, entertaining game by 3-2. The hosts led after 5 minutes when Nathan Walker netted from close range, after a free kick rebounded off the bar, but Parley levelled on 16 minutes when Lee Milton fired home after Dorchester failed to clear a corner. The Magpies were ahead again on the half hour from a free kick by Mickey Hubbard, but Parley made it 2-2 just before the break with a delightful chip over the keeper by Matt Newbery. The second half was fairly even, with both sides creating chances to make it 3-2, but with extra time looming, Dorchester made it 3-2 with just 2 minutes to go with a successful penalty by Dan Smith after a foul on Jack Odam, who was at least a yard OUTSIDE the penalty box when contact occurred! That was confirmed by the match report in the following day s Dorset Echo, who, in fact, said that the foul was at least TWO yards outside the box! How did the officials not spot that??!! Nevertheless, it was the right way to end to a very good county cup tie, because no one really wants extra time if they re truly honest, do they? And that was that & I was back in Weymouth around 20 minutes later, having seen Dorchester recover from conceding 7 against the Rovers! DAVE S FIELD REVIEW -10
GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO COSSHAM STREET for today s Evo-Stik League match against our very welcome (and local) friends from LARKHALL ATHLETIC. Thank you for your attendance today and for buying this programme. This is the Larks 1 st visit to Cossham Street for many years & certainly their 1 st visit as a Southern League club. They have made a strong start to the season & have impressed many people & we know we are in for a tough game today. We certainly need to kick-start our league season again, now that we are out of all the cups, so it is all about getting back to winning ways after last week s disappointing defeat at Sholing. Please, then, give Our Boyz all you support as we strive for the 3 points on offer COME ON THE FIELD! NOW IT SEEMS AGES SINCE I LAST SAW A HOME GAME which in fact was the Stratford home defeat on 11 October but that s because I was away for a week when we beat EVESHAM UNITED & BISHOPS CLEEVE here in late October, and you can read where I ended up on the Tuesday night of that week elsewhere in this programme. You can t argue with 2 wins like that though & I dare say we needed both at the time. Prior to that, we had also lost 3-0 at SHORTWOOD & won 3-0 at CLEVEDON, so I guess those 2 games balanced themselves out as well. It was also disappointing to have lost our grip on the GFA Trophy, losing 3-1 at home to CIRENCESTER TOWN on Bonfire Night, but at the same time, we can t be too greedy we did win it for the last 2 seasons! AND SPEAKING OF COUNTY CUPS, you have to feel a little for local Toolstation League side HENGROVE ATHLETIC, beaten 13-0 (!) at Yeovil Town the other week in the Somerset Premier Cup which we no longer participate in. It sounded as if Yeovil fielded a stronger team than they would usually have done for a game like that, and by all accounts, they only led 2-0 at the interval, but manager Gary Johnson had a few words on the break & the Glovers rattled in another 11 goals. No one wants to get beaten like that, but this is football & these things happen sometimes just like the time in the early 90s when we beat Dawlish Town by 14-0 & then a few months later, Clevedon Town beat Dawlish 18-0 (!) at the Hand Stadium; an awesome score-line, you have to admit, but then as I would say to a Clevedon-orientated works colleague of mine each time he was crowing about winning 18-0 Yes, a great win, but when we won 14-0, WE DID IT AWAY FROM HOME! Anyway, I hope Hengrove can bounce back from their south Somerset nightmare, put it all behind them & get on with the rest of the season. Good luck to them in that respect. THE SHOLING AWAY TRIP was not exactly a Top Day Out for the Travelling Support, after we lost 2-1 down there in a disappointing display & the defeat left us languishing in a kind of No Man s Land in the league table, but next week sees the team head south again, twice in 3 days! WIMBORNE TOWN away next Saturday is followed on the Tuesday by a visit to struggling BASHLEY, who conceded ELEVEN (!) at NORTH LEIGH last week. Both games will be hard in their own ways, but if we are to start climbing the table, then we need to aim for maybe 4 points from 6, or even all 6! Time now for a nostalgic look back at a particular month in recent or not so-recent years & see how we fared in that period. Today we look at APRIL 1997. MUFC RESULTS IN APRIL 1997 05-04-97 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 4, BIDEFORD 2 SCREWFIX LGE 08-04-97 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 3, TIVERTON TOWN 0 SCREWFIX LGE 12-04-97 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 0, CHIPPENHAM TOWN 1 LES PHILLIPS CUP 15-04-97 BRIDGWATER TOWN 0, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 2 SCREWFIX LGE 19-04-97 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 4, TORRINGTON 1 SCREWFIX LGE 22-04-97 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1, CALNE TOWN 3 SCREWFIX LGE 24-04-97 BRISLINGTON 0, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 SCREWFIX LGE THE 1996-1997 SEASON OVERALL This was the season that it was all meant to happen, but it never quite did. The previous campaign, 1995-1996, put us on the map, thanks to manager TERRY ROWLES & some astute signings. We reached the FA Vase Semi-Finals, only to lose 2-1 to Clitheroe over 2 legs & we finished 3 rd in the Great Mills League behind the Big Two of Taunton Town & Tiverton Town. Backed by another large playing budget, Tel again assembled a strong-looking squad in 1996-97, but a challenge for the GML title never materialized, as the Big Two disappeared over the horizon long before Christmas. There was to be no real Vase run either & although we finished 3 rd in the GML again, our big money days were soon to be over. We did win the GFA Trophy though, so the season wasn t a complete failure! THE GAMES IN QUESTION The month began with a fairly comfortable 4-2 home win v BIDEFORD. MATT RAWLINS (3 & 24) soon put us 2-0 ahead, but Ellis Laight (later of Taunton Town fame) pulled one back on 34. Devonbased MARK LORAM made it 3-1 right on half time & a MATT RAWLINS penalty on 48 minutes made it 4-1 & as the game was just about wrapped up, coinciding with a red card for Bideford s John McMullen. Not to be outdone, Biddy got one back for 4-2 (86) in front of a pitifully low gate of just 112. Then came a superb 3-0 win v mighty TIVERTON TOWN, who had gone 28 league games without defeat! The win came when, in the mid-90s, Tivvy were at their absolute peak, so the importance of this win could not be under-estimated. NIGEL GILLARD (20) & MARK LORAM (34 & 55) netted the goals in a sparkling MUFC show & the Post report later said that CARL SAUNDERS had produced a sparkling performance as MUFC destroyed Tiverton s 28-match unbeaten league record. The Les Phillips Cup Semi-Final came next, but CHIPPENHAM TOWN had already been beaten THREE times in different competitions at Cossham St in that season & they were in no mood to make it 4! With a Cup Final place at stake, that strengthened their resolve & they finally got it right against us, winning 1-0 thanks to a Barry Flippance goal (53). For us, this game came much too quickly after the Tiverton match & clearly, we were still on Cloud 9 from the previous Tuesday night! But we bounced back well 3 days later, winning 2-0 at BRIDGWATER TOWN, which always was a difficult place to win at. MATT RAWLINS (pen) & MARK LORAM found the target for us & then we saw off TORRINGTON with a 4-1 home win. MATT RAWLINS (2) & RICHARD THOMPSON (27) set us on our way, but Dave Bath (40) netted a timely penalty for the Super Greens. The visitors battled well after the break, but we got back on track to wrap up the points with further goals from PAUL CICHY (76) & ANDY PERRETT (81). Our euphoria didn t last long, though, as mid-table CALNE TOWN won 3-1 at Cossham St. Early strikes from Wayne Townsend (13) & Steve Davis (21) knocked us for 6, but although ANDY PERRETT eventually pulled one back on 62, Tony Hammersley then rammed home Calne s 3 rd goal on 68 & that was that! The final game of the month came 2 days later & we were back on song again as MARK LORAM bagged the only goal of the game at nearby BRISLINGTON with just 9 minutes to go.
