3 A Welcome from our Chairman It is a privilege to be elected for the second year as chairman of Blaenavon Blues. What a transformation the last six months has been, we now have our own clubhouse something this club has never had in its 65 years history. We also have a pitch which is one of the best playing surfaces in Gwent. Brewery and Visitors Centre Now Open on the Gilchrist Thomas Industrial Estate. Supporters of Blaenavon Blues AFC We have also taken over the junior section which is going to be a challenge for us as we hope to achieve better playing surfaces and improve the facilities to give them the best possible chance to improve and develop into good footballers. We have very good coaches at all levels and my thanks to them for taking so much time and commitment to the cause. Lastly i thank all my committee members who have worked tirelessly to achieve what we now have. Best of luck to our visitors today and we welcome you into our new clubhouse after the match. 6 Match Report Lliswerry 1 - Blaenavon Blues 0 Blues travelled to league leaders Lliswerry and were very unlucky not to return with at least a share of the points. On an artificial surface that should have been a huge advantage to the home side Blues took the game to Lliswerry, with Craig Tanner and Mike Waite menacing in the early Blues attacks. On fifteen minutes Tanner burst through and shot wide, Darran Harris, in a more familiar role up front was a constant threat to the home defence. With halftime approaching Lliswerry took the lead with a well taken goal by their main striker. The second half followed the same pattern with the Blues keeping posession of the ball for long periods. Marc Browning and Jamie Brankley working tirelessly in central midfield regaining posession on the few occasions that Lliswerry were in control of the ball. A Tanner freekick was headed over the bar by Nathan Simons and with time running out, Brankley broke through the home defence only to have his effort cleared off the line. The game ended with the Blues well on top but unable to find a way through the tough tackling Lliswerry defence. After some heavy defeats Blues should gain confidence from their performance. The defence was sound throughout, keeper Lee Jones, fullbacks Ryan Simons, Grant Evans and Richard Williams all had good games. Centre back pairing Lee Wathen and Darryl Brenton were the outstanding Blaenavon players. Young Matt Burns did well when he came on as a substitute. 7 Cwmbran Town Club History Cwmbrân Town was formed in 1951 when Whiteheads AFC disbanded. After playing in junior leagues the club switched to the Welsh League in 1960, moving to Cwmbrân Athletics Stadium in In 1978 Cwmbrân finished bottom of the Welsh League Premier Division and were relegated, in 1981 the Crows finished 16th but in 1982 won promotion to the Premier Division. In 1986 Cwmbrân became full members of the FAW and were chosen as one of 14 Welsh clubs to participate in both the English FA Cup and FA Trophy. It was not until November 1991 that the club made a substantial move forwards in appointing Tony Willcox as manager. The Town were then founder members of the newly formed League of Wales, and went on to win the Championship at the first attempt in As champions they represented Wales in the European Champions Cup - the only League of Wales side to do so losing out to Cork City on away goals. In 1998 Cwmbrân again qualified for Europe as Welsh Cup finalists, meeting Romanian side Nationale Bucerusti. The following season they went one better reaching the UEFA Cup by finishing third in the Welsh Premier League to set up a two legged encounter with Glasgow Celtic. In 2002/03 Cwmbrân Town reached the Welsh Cup Final narrowly missing out after a penalty shoot out with Barry Town. Sadly during the 2002/03 season the club lost one of the most respected managers throughout the Welsh football, with the sudden death of Tony Willcox, known affectionately as Mr Cwmbrân. Despite this loss, and as a result of finishing runners up in the Welsh Cup in 2002/03 the club qualified for the UEFA Cup and were drawn against Maccabi Haifa from Israel, who in the 2002/03 season beat Manchester United in the Champions League. The 2003/04 season saw the introduction of a new manager, Mr Brian Coyne, who had previously managed Newtown. Brian s reign as manager was short lived however, and during the 2004/05 season after the resignation of long term Chairman Mr John Colley, Brian also decided to step down as manager due to financial reasons. For the remainder of this season Cwmbrân were managed by former player Sean Wharton. For the next two seasons, in difficult circumstances Sean looked to local talent in an attempt to avoid relegation, but unfortunately at the end of the 2006/07 season Cwmbrân were relegated for the first time from the Welsh Premier League into the Welsh Football League. It was at this time that Sean felt it was time for a change and resigned at the end of the campaign. For the 2009/10 season the club had a new management team of Barrie Hughes and Gareth Kedward. With a completely new squad, results were indifferent throughout the season which saw the club finish fifth from bottom in Division 2, and because of the league restructure demotion to Division 3 followed. Unfortunately, another relegation followed at the end of the 2010/11 season with Barrie Hughes resigning mid-season. Mark Parfitt was brought in as Manager for the season with Jamie Jenkins as his assistant and built a brand new squad for the season in an effort to return the club back to the Welsh League unfortunately our 1st season in the Gwent County League saw us finish 3rd. Regrettably due to family reasons Mark Parfitt resigned at the start of this season, the club moved swiftly to appoint Jamie Jenkins as Magager with Patrick O Hagan and Andrew Howells as his two assistants.
