Aquatics Underwater Explorations Saturday, February 16 / 4:00-6:00pm / Indoor Pool Family Fun Nights have finally arrived at the Indoor Pool. Various activities will be set up for you and your family to explore as an open house. These activities will be designed to help your child become comfortable in the water while providing quality family time. Adults & Children Ages 1-7 Welcome / Complimentary Inflatable Swimming Aids Safety Info Inflatable swimming aids are a great safety resource to use when children are not able to swim. However there are some concerns when using these aids: Inflatable swimming aids are not meant to teach children how to swim. In fact, they do just the opposite. Most aids teach children to swim vertically, but in order to swim properly your body needs to be horizontal in the water. Aids also teach children to bicycle kick. Since they are vertical in the water their legs tend to kick in a circular motion, like they are riding a bike instead of learning to flutter kick. Most concerning, aids give children a false sense of security in the water. This gives them confidence in the water and they could jump in without their aid and not even realize that they cannot swim without it. Also the opposite can happen, children can become overly dependent on their vest and become afraid to swim without it. Although it is great that aids keep children s heads above water, this can also be a concern. Without placing their face and head in the water, they will not learn how to correctly hold their breath. If they cannot hold their breath, they will not be able to swim. So when should floatation devices be used? Floatation devices should be used on occasion, not every time your child is in the pool. Enroll your child in lessons, get in the water with them, take the vest off! Advanced registration is requested for Aquatics events. Please stop by or contact the B&T Welcome Center at 614-939-8550 for more information and registration.
