CRAUGHWELL U N IT E D BLACK AND BLUE The Craughwell United FC Newsletter Issue 16 September 2015 Free New season, new facilities, let s go! FAI Chief Executive John Delaney and County Mayor Peter Roche officially opened our new pitch with plenty of help from our younger players. Following three years of planning and dreaming, Saturday 22 August 2015 turned out to be a milestone day for Craughwell United FC. In attendance on the big day were - FAI Chief Executive John Delaney, County Mayor Peter Roche, past and present club officers along with players and parents celebrated the official opening of our new pitch at Coleman Park. Mr Delaney and Cllr Roche complemented our club and volunteers for all the effort and wished us every success in the future. We can now prepare for the 2015/16 season with two full size pitches, two small pitches and two sets of dressing rooms to cope with twenty club teams in league and cup competitions. For the latest news, photos, fixtures and results log onto www.craughwellunitedfc.com

Chairmans Address Before we lash full steam into the new season, I want to reflect a little on the achievements of the year gone by. In competition, we did not match our record haul of the 2013/4 season but as always, our teams were extremely competitive at all levels. Highlights were the U16 boys winning the Galway FA Championship League and the U18 boys winning the Connacht Shield in Strandhill. In facility developments, we were proud to open our new pitch recently at Coleman Park in the esteemed presence of FAI Chief Executive John Delaney and County Mayor Peter Roche. I must mention the people that contributed to a great day: to our sponsors for the pitch signage, to Mike Dolan in Beattys Loughrea for materials, to our Village Butcher Michael Walsh for his tasty burgers and hot dogs, to Jody Connolly for the ice cream machine, drinks and snacks, to Colga FC for the marquee, to Ann Moran for the photography (excellently featured in this newsletter), to Mary Feeney and her GRD team who maintain the entire facility to a high standard and to our own committee and club volunteers who constructed, directed, cooked, cleaned, refereed, managed and finally partied until the early hours. A special thanks has to go to Tom Cunningham for bringing it all together on the day. We must express gratitude to managers stepping down for their positive contributions last season, namely Nigel Garman, Willie O Connor, Mickey Gallagher and John Sullivan. We hope they stay involved in other areas within the club. We welcome all the new managers and coaches on board for this season along with our new Facilities Manager John Woods and Child Welfare Officer Anne Marie Flanagan. Following our Summer AGM we created two new sub-committees to focus on vital aspects within our club. The Girls Football Committee of John Woods, John Sullivan and Tom Cunningham will try to increase the profile and development of our female players. The Fundraising Committee of Bill Doran, Michael Walsh and John Sullivan will help channel much needed funds into the club for ongoing facilities development. Finally, with the new season already in progress, I wish our players the best of luck in all competitions. Please respect your fellow players, managers and officials; represent your club with determination but most of all, enjoy your football. Aidan Collins Chairman, Craughwell United FC 2

Celebration Day Saturday 22 August 2015 A big crowd turned out for the much anticipated Legends v Managers match on our new pitch at Coleman Park. Played in balmy conditions, the Legends went two up with goals from Peter Cloonan and Audie Clarke but the Managers nicked one back before half time through Tommy Donoghue. In the second half, Donoghue levelled the match after Mike Lyons was harshly penalised for what looked like a fair tackle inside the box. However, the Legends had time to find a controversial winner through Bomber Maloney as keeper Aubrey Mulveen appeared to have been impeded when coming to catch the ball. Stand out performances for the legends from Audie Clarke, Mickey Gallagher and evergreen keeper Garvan McDaid who made some fantastic saves. For the Managers, Michael Walsh, Charlie Duggan and Dave McFadden gave as good as they got. Great fun and plenty of skill from both sides kept the supporters happy. 6
