1 CRAUGHWELL BLACK AND BLUE The Craughwell United FC Newsletter Issue 11 March Free U17 boys head their way to League Title The U17 team who defeated Maree/Oranmore 3-1 to win league title. The U17 team played their final league game at home to Maree/Oranmore, needing only a point to secure the Division 1 league title. A wet morning left the pitch in poor condition making it difficult to play the free-flowing football which this team has displayed all season. United started tentatively as you would expect with the away side doing the early pressing. However Craughwell started to create chances and were rewarded by a good header from Aaron Brereton on fifteen minutes. Several more opportunities slipped away before Brereton again headed in from the edge of the box for his second goal amid great celebrations. Maree/Oranmore came back at United and scored after a goalmouth scramble to bring the score to 2-1. With the next goal going to be all important, it was Craughwell who nicked it. Starting with brilliant work from striker Gavin O Toole battling to win the ball near the corner flag, he ghosted past the defender along the byline before getting the cross over for Dara Cunney to flick in with a deft header. The second half didn t produce any more goals but Craughwell were as confident and composed as they have been all season leaving the final score at 3-1. United were unbeaten in the league with eight wins and one draw, scoring thirty four goals and conceding a miserable five goals. A brilliant team performance all round with contributions from every player on the panel. They will now be aiming to complete the league and cup double with a cup semi-final against Kilshanvey United in the coming weeks. 2 U14 boys win Divisional Cup Final for second season running The U14 boys who beat renmore 2-0 in eamonn Deacy Park. Front row Diarmaid McCartin, Ben Creaven, Adrian Prendergast, Adam Cunney, Alan Callanan, Eoin Conaghan, Dylan Shaughnessy, Micheál McFadden The U14 boys won their Divisional Cup title for the second season running with a well deserved 2-0 win over a gallant Renmore side. The city team had the better start but United soon found their rhythm and after some sustained pressure from successive corners, Alan Callanan bundled the ball in for the lead goal. Further Craughwell pressure, including an Adrian Prendergast header coming back off the woodwork, yielded no more reward and so the first half ended with the single goal lead. Renmore came out fighting in the second half and caused United problems particularly from their pacy left winger. However, with Renmore keeping a high defensive line, Craughwell were able to mount several quick counter attacks including a mazy run from Dylan Shaughnessy whose shot went agonisingly wide. The next goal was going to be crucial and following another counter from Craughwell, it was an Adrian Prendergast shot from outside the box, looping over the Renmore keeper and in for the second goal. Craughwell defended well for the remainder of the half to hold their two goal lead and win the cup again. December Player of the Month Ben Creaven U14 Ben plays at centre back for our U14 team and his all-round play has been vital throughout the season. He keeps a tight ship at the back, resulting in United having the meanest defence in League Division 1. CHEEVERS Lounge Bar & Accommodation Craughwell, Co. His presence in the team has been instrumental in keeping us right behind leaders Oughterard in the promotion position.

3 U15 boys prepare for Final appearance after good cup run The U15 team who beat Salthill Devon B 4-0 in their Cup semi-final. The U15 boys booked their place in the Division 1 Cup Final with a 4-0 victory over Salthill Devon B. Craughwell held a one goal lead at half time thanks to Cillian Dolan's early thumping free kick. In the second half, United's midfield began to get on top and grew stronger as the half progressed with the second goal coming from the excellent Ronan Nevin, nodding home following a corner. After this Craughwell poured forward and two late goals, including a second from striker Dolan and also Jack Lally capping an outstanding midfield display, sealed their place in the final against St Bernards in the coming weeks. Craughwell s game has come together over the last few matches and they will be confident that the expansive Deacy Park pitch will suit their passing game. However, their opponents have also improved significantly from their opening league defeat to Craughwell last September, so it will be all to play for on the day. January Player of the Month ronan Nevin U15 Ronan helped his U15 team to record two wins and one draw in January while scoring six goals including a hatrick. This is a great achievement considering Ronan plays in midfield and does as much work defending as he does attacking. His attitude in games as well as training is first class. He is a deserved winner of this month's award. 3

4 U12 boys reach Connacht Cup semi-final The Craughwell United U12A boys team who advanced to the Connacht Cup semi-final with a 3-1 win over Cregmore. Back row Jack Walsh, Glenn Lawlor Smalle, Ciaran Connaughton, Kevin Molloy, Ben Keane, Ryan Gallagher, Sean Connaughton, Finbarr McFadden, Darragh Conaghan along with coaches John Smalle and Declan Tuffy. Front row Brandon Morgan, Adam Tuffy, Cian Garman, Alex Evans, Conor Geoghegan, Daniel Shannon, Alex Boyle. The U12A boy s team recorded an excellent 3-1 home win over Cregmore to advance to the semi-finals of the Connacht Cup recently. Craughwell played against the strong wind in the first half and were unlucky not to go ahead after five minutes when Alex Boyle burst down the right side and drove the ball goalwards only to miss narrowly at the far post. Cregmore had their own chances and with the strong breeze at their backs it was only a matter of time before they took the lead. It came after fifteen minutes when Nathan Granger fired a great ball into the bottom left hand corner. Just before half time United keeper Ben Keane made a brilliant save to keep the score at 1-0 to the visitors. In the second half, United had most of the ball and drew level after ten minutes when Sean Connaughton scored his tenth goal this season with a rocket shot leaving the Cregmore keeper with no chance. Craughwell soon brought on all their substitutes to freshen things up and when Brandon Morgan, only on the pitch two minutes, beat the keeper at the near post, his shot made the score 2-1 to Craughwell. The game was wrapped up five minutes later when Finbarr McFadden broke free down the left side and coolly chipped the ball over a fast advancing keeper to make it 3-1. A great result which now sees us into the semi-finals against Mervue. Another super team effort, well done all. Grant + 2,500 Fundraising so far Craughwell United launched our Weekly 50/50 Cash Draw in December with the purpose of funding our new pitch development at Coleman Park. This project is due to start in April, weather permitting, and we are asking all our players and parents to support the weekly draw. Since Christmas, we have fundraised over 2,500 and also given out over 2,500 in weekly prizes, so we need to raise 15,500 to reach our target. Our current pitch is not adequate to support all our teams and the volume of matches are taking their toll (see pictures from recent matches). Therefore, the sooner we generate the funds required to finish pitch construction, the better for all our teams. Thank you for your continued support and please keep playing for just 2 every week.
