Mungret Club Notes 15 April 2014 U8/U10 Camogie Blitz Mungret hosted the first of the camogie cluster blitzes for under 8 and under 10 teams last Sunday 13 April. Patrickswell and Monaleen were our visitors for what turned out to be a terrific event. Our under 10s fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw level mid way through the second half in the game with Patrickswell, thanks to two quick-fire goals from Ella Mason. Amy O Halloran and Caoimhe O Rourke were doing very well around the middle, and Ella Page then kept us in the game with a fantastic save in goals, but Patrickswell were that bit stronger and pulled away with a couple of late goals. In our next match we fell behind early to Monaleen, but from then to half time applied relentless pressure which was eventually rewarded with a goal from Zoe Page. We were playing some of our best hurling by now, with Aela Gleeson, Caoimhe Holmes and Amy Connolly all playing particularly well, with great support from Emma Kelly and Shannon O Dwyer in defence. Ella Fahy also deserves great credit for playing on despite a nasty injury. However, we weren t quick enough to react to a quick break up the field from Monaleen which resulted in us falling behind again. Try as we might, we couldn t get back into it, and two Monaleen goals in the last minute put a flattering look on what was a very tight match. Team: Shannon O Dwyer, Ella Page, Caoimhe Holmes, Caoimhe O Rourke, Zoe Page, Ella Mason, Amy O Halloran, Aela Gleeson, Amy Connolly, Ella Fahy, Emma Kelly. Mungret U10 Camogie Team, with Ella Mason already in the clubhouse! 1
Meanwhile, our Under 8 team were also competing against the same opposition, and as far as Mungret are concerned, they showed the older girls how it is done by recording two great wins against their opponents. They deserve fantastic credit for their performance on what was the very first competitive outing for many of them. Team: Sophie O Brien, Rachel Summers, Sarah Horgan, Brooke Quinn, Mollie Tobin, Niamh Stackpoole, Aimee Horgan, Emma Nagle, Lily Quinn, Eimear Greaney. Intermediate Hurlers Our hurlers met the neighbours Ballybrown in Claughaun on Saturday in cold but dry conditions where Mungret were dominated from the start and even though the scores came in for them they did not manage to catch up. Photo shows Brendan Giltinane showing the Ballybrown guys his technique of soloing. Ladies Football U16s On Monday 7 th our U16s hosted Monagea in the League with the first half providing and evenly enough contest. Monagea got off to a dream start scoring a goal and a point but our girls soon got into the swing of things with a goal and a point from Emer O Keeffe. Monagea responded with another goal and a point and Aoibhean Maher finished off the first half with well deserved point to see the score at half time Mungret 1-2 Monagea 2-2. Mungret started better in the second half with two more goals and a point from Emer O Keeffe but Monagea responded with a goal and a spate of points scoring saw our girls on the back-foot. A late point from Shannon Barron saw the final score Mungret 3-4 Monagea 3-9. Some great work from Karin Mason, Rachel Fennell, Emma Conway, Clare O Meara and Niamh O Keeffe on the night. 2
Ladies Football U12s Our U12s A team travelled to Herbertstown to take on St.Bridgets in the championship. Mungret got off to a blistering start with 3-3 scored by Emer O Keeffe before anyone knew what was happening. St.Brigets kicked over a point when Aoife Morrissey soloed the length of the pitch to score a great goal. Points from Fiona O Brien and another from Aoife Morrissey ensured a strong lead at the interval. An early goal from Amy O Byrne saw the girls settle in to their groove very early in the second half. A well deserved point from a very hard working Ailbhe Larkin was soon followed by a goal and two points from Emer O Keeffe. A point from Aoife Morrissey was topped off by two great points from Alanaha McDonagh to see the girls run out comfortable winners Mungret 6-11 St.Bridgets 1-1. The girls will play Monaleen at home next Friday. Our U12s B team hosted Feoh/Castlemahon also on Friday evening. While Feoh/Castlemahon proved to be too strong for our girls on the night this team are a very young side that showed great guts and determination and are improving with every game. Keep it up girls your doing a great job! Ladies Football Junior The Juniors had a home venue against Murroe/Boher on Saturday evening. The first half was an even enough contest with Mungret getting goals from Niamh O Keeffe, Claire Coughlan and Marie Claire Curtin and a point from Roisin O Loughlin. Murroe/Boher topped that scoring 3-2 before half time. After half time Marita O Brien scored a great point from a tricky angle but Murroe/Bohe scored several points without reply to see them pull away from Mungret at the end and run out comfortable winners. Raffle The Ladies Football will hold an Easter Raffle on Easter Saturday 19 th April after 11:00 training at the village pitch. Tickets for 2 or 3 for 5 gets you in to a draw from some great prizes. All support is greatly appreciated for this event. Juvenile U12 Hurling and Football The Under 12 leagues will have the same format as last year, with fottball and hurling alternating on successive Thursday evenings. The league commences with a round of football matches on Thursday April 25, and the plan is that matches will be scheduled every Thursday right into the first week of August. A few weeks will then be allowed to finish any outstanding matches, before the hurling finals day takes place on Saturday September 6, with the football finals following one week later. Note that the competition will be split into two phases, with teams playing off in round-robin format in groups of four for phase 1. Out Under 11 hurlers are grouped against Ballybrown White, Fedamore and Na Piarsaigh Navy, while our U12 hurlers will face off against Na Piarsaigh Blue, Ballybrown Green and Croagh/Kilfinny. Meanwhile, the U11 footballers face Bruff and Fedamore, while the U12 footballers are grouped with Ahane, Crecora and Pallasgreen. 3
U9 and U10 Football U9 and U10 football players from Mungret St Pauls GAA club took part in the Limerick U10 Football Blitz on Friday night in the UL North Campus arena. We had over 40 players from the club who played against various football teams around the city and county. Each of the 4 teams from Mungret played 3 games. All the players demonstrated great team spirit, football skills in catching, passing, kicking and blocking. Thanks to all the players, family members and coaches who came out to support a great event. Easter Camp Camp starts next week Tuesday 22nd to Thursday 24th April. Only 30 for the camp. Two of our coaches daughters were competing- Regina Long (U10 Camogie coach) and Fintan Hynes (U10 hurling coach) We congratulate Erika Long on coming 9th and Emma Hynes on coming 21st in the World. Well done girls Lotto Numbers drawn 14 April 2014: 3, 10, 24, 31. No Winner. Lucky Dips Winners: Betty Lawlor, Pick Me, Jo Shinnors, Emma Noonan, Grace Tobin, Maureen Long, Mary O Hanlon, Val Greaney, Louise Flynn, Michael O Hanlon. Next Weeks Jackpot: 6,400 U21 Hurling The supporters were back to Claughaun on Sunday for the U21 Final against Monaleen. The first half was a score for score with Monaleen putting pressure on our backs but any tries on goals were quickly blocked down by Conor O'Brien ( as can be seen in the photo). At the half time break Mungret were in the lead with 2 points. Monaleen came back to the pitch with more determination and started to take back the lead. Unfortunately for our lads Monaleen were the outright winners. Well done to the management and players for all the training and hardwork they put in to get to the final. However we did not leave completely empty handed, and Cian O Brien can take some consolation from his robust contribution to the photo of the week, shown below. 5
County Players Well done to Cian O'Brien on being on the Limerick Minor hurling team that defeated Tipperary at the weekend. Best of luck to Luke O'Connell and Killian Ryan who play for Limerick in the Minor football who play Cork in Cork on Wednesday. Best of luck also to Sinead Madden who will play with the Limerick Minor Camogie panel who play in the Munster semi Final in Galway on Saturday Party Time Looking for something different?
