1 Mungret Club Notes 23 September 2014 U16 Football We played at home against Old Christians on 17th September, in a match that resulted in a good win for us. Well done to all on a great game. Photos on football-v-old-christians-17th-sept-2014 U14 Hurling The U14 boys got to play in the Gaelic Grounds for their Semi Final where a lot of their favourite players had played before. After thunder and lightning in the morning the weather had settled before they took to the pitch. Patrickswell were the opposition and these young players were ready for them. They had a great first half and led 0-9 to 0-5 at half time. If started to get darker in the second half and the lights were on. Patrickswell tore into the fray from the word go in the second hald, and had nosed in front before the three quarters mark. Mungret scored a lovely goal that rose the spirits but we were dealt a stunning blow when Patrickswell goaled immediately afterwards. Mungret did not give up but Patrickwell had gotten the upperhand and did not give Mungret many chances to get a score in. Final score 1-13 to 2-14 to Patrickwell. Well done to all on a great 1

2 heartstopping match. This team will yet go on to great things. Players on the night were. We will be continuing to cover it over the next week, because, besides prominsing to be a terrific evening of fun and entertainment, it will also be a most important fundraiser for our club. There are 20 people coerced into couples working very hard for the last few weeks for a dance off and to say the competitive streaks are evident would be an understatement. There are rumours of couples meeting privately to practise something, one dancer has installed an IPod docking station in the cowshed to practise the moves during milking, a goalie who has been spotted at training with earphones on so he can get the beat right and a fair increase in people secretly pounding the roads to ensure that leotards are not causing too much bulging or chaffing. The best way of describing the event would be to label it as Strictly Come Irish Dancing, where everyone in attendance gets the chance to vote on the performance of our dancers. All of the 20 people are involved in our club Players, Coaches, Supporters, Refreshment Providers, Bar People, Administrators, etc. They have given their time freely and they are putting a huge amount of practice and effort into this. There will be points awarded to the couples under 3 criteria: 2

3 Dancing Ability 50% Costume / Entertainment Value 20% Voting 30% You can vote for a couple at 2 per vote. This can be done on the night or by giving the 2 to any of the dancers or dropping it onto the club house in a envelope with the dancers name on it. The Southcourt has a capacity of 900 guests for this event and we need you support to make this a success. We are calling on every member of the club to get behind this effort to ensure its success. The club is embarking on an ambitious, and costly, development plan, so let s get behind this event and give ourselves the solid foundation to build for the future. U10 Hurling Holycross Ballycahill U10 Bob Skakelum Tournament: Teams for this tournament travelled from Laois, Waterford, Limerick and Tipp. Followed by a piper and parade. A Great day at Holycross U10 Hurling Tournament which was well organised. Mungret had two great teams. The first team were a little off form but got to the shield final and lost out to a very strong newcastlewest team. The second team played outstanding hurling. They showed passion, hunger, skill and determination 3

Not in photo Michael Cleary. Camogie - U10 County Blitz Mungret St Paul s Camogie once again hosted the U10 County Blitz on Saturday last. This year s blitz was well supported with 25 clubs and over 300 Camogie stars of the future taking to the field of play. Throughout the day there was some absolutely fantastic skills and sportsmanship on display. Full credit must go to the mentors of each team for their cooperation on the day. The day commenced with the team parade which was proudly lead out by Mungret St Paul s Camogie girls. On the day over 60 games were facilitated in this festival of Camogie. Mungret were represented by two teams both who battled hard putting in some great performances and were unlucky not to advance to the latter stages of the competition. The arrival of the Intermediate All Ireland Cup and players added greatly to the atmosphere on the day as both young and old took the opportunity for the odd selfie and to raise the cup aloft. Hosting the blitz is a massive undertaking for the Camogie section and could not be facilitated without the commitment and hard work of our officers, committee & team mentors. Once again the cooperation and assistance from the wider club was second to none ensuring that Mungret St Paul s GAA Club continues to be a venue synonymous with hospitality, and a very warm welcome throughout the GAA community. We are indebted to all those who gave of their time freely on Saturday (to many to name individually) to assist us in the areas of Pitch Coordination, Refereeing, Hospitality, Car Parking, Photography & Preparation of the facilitates. However it would be remiss 4

5 of the Camogie Club not to acknowledge the amount of hard work put into organizing this event by our club Secretary Isobel Madden. On the field, we were fortunate to be allowed to enter two teams into the competition, otherwise we would have had more subs than players. We fielded an Under 9 team and an Under 10 team. The under 9s tried their best but were invariably pitted against girls who were that bit older and more experienced. Although they lost theirgames, it was not for want of trying, and special mention must go to Amy O Halloran and Aoife Long in particular for putting in some great performances. U9 Camogie at the County Blitz The Under 10 team also had a disappointing day at the office. However they put in a fiercely competitive performance against a Granagh-Ballingarry team that gave eventual winners Crecora the fright of their lives in a subsequent match, and recorded a great win against Patrickswell which qualified them for the next phase of the tournament. We went down to a strong Newcastlewest in a match which ended our interest in the competition, but to the amazement of coaches and parents, the girls were all mustard keen to play a fifth match. Their attitude, determination and teamwork were fantastic and the following team deserves great credit for doing the club proud; Eala Gleeson, Amy Connolly, Leah Nolan, Ella Mason, Zoe Page, Shannon O Dwyer, Holly Roche, Ciara O Keefe, Caoimhe Holmes, Caoimhe O Rourke, Dervala Smith, Ciara Brennan, Sarah Butler, Grace O Keefe. 5

6 U10 Camogie Team at the County Blitz Finally, well done to Crecora on winning the tournament, and a special mention to Kilmallock and eventual runners-up Ballybrown, who served up a semi-final that for excitement, intensity and edgeof-the-seat drama has rarely been seen in the tournament before. The approximately 100 people who watched it will never forget a game that was finally won with an Alex Connolle point with the last puck of the game. Junior Camogie Shannonside (Mungret St Paul s, Treaty Gaels & Monaleen) played Patrickswell on Sunday evening in Mungret. After a spirited performance we lost out by one point. Shannonside showed immense commitment and determination throughout the contest. Despite this being our first year of junior competition for all of this team our girls continue to gain confidence and momentum at this level. Fixtures Wednesday 24th Sept Minor Hurling V.
