Mungret St. Pauls Newsletter 25 June 2015 U14 Hurling The boys arrived in Thurles on Saturday where they had a warm up before their first match against O'Loughlin Gaels from Kilkenny. Expecting a tough match which is what they got and it was exciting being down by 7 points at one stage they managed to crawl back but more time was needed they were 2 points away from a draw O'Loughlin Gaels 3-05 to Mungret The second match was against Douglas of Cork after the first loss spirits were down. There was not much scored in the first half but Douglas really worked up the points finishing 0-09 to 0-01 to Douglas, This left Mungret out of the running for the cup final but another match to play against Moycarkey Borris, of Tipperary. This was to be the last match of the day for the boys with just 1 point in the difference in the result against us. A great experience for the boys as they had 3 great opponents. Well done to the boys you have done your club proud and represented them well. Well done also to the mentors Richie Bourke, Joe Moriarty, Jason Brosnan, Brendan Ryan and Vince Bolger. The boys will not get much of a rest as they are back on home ground for the championship against Ahane on Friday night. A very special Thank You to Darragh Hernan who accompanied the team on the day and took some fantastic photos. They are now available on &uploaded=55
U14 Camogie Please see special edition newsletter for Féile write up. Ladies Football The Feile journey continues for the club with the Ladies Footballers travelling to Wexford on Friday to embark on their quest for Feile glory. This is the second time in three years the girls have travelled as Feile county champions and there are some of the girls travelling to Wexford that also made the trip to Derry. We are being hosted by Crossabeg/Ballymurn in Wexford for the duration of the weekend and a large group of parents and supporters are also planning the trip. On Friday evening Mungret will play Blackwater from Wexford at 4:30 and Suncroft from Kildare at 6:45 in the Blackwater pitch. On Saturday Mungret will take on their hosts Crossabeg/Ballymurn at 10:30 and all teams will progress to a quarter final Saturday evening. With a bit of luck (and a lot of hard work) hopefully the girls will progress further in the competition at this stage. Best of luck to all the girls competing in the Feile over the coming weekend and a big thank you to the coaches and committee who made this trip possible. Win, loose or draw it promises to be a great weekend of sport in the Sunny southeast.
U12 Football League Match V Newcastlewest After victory in our first league match against Fr Caseys our 2nd outing was away to Newcastlewest last Thurs evening. We knew this was going to be a tough encounter having played them recently in both Football and Hurling with score tied at 1 each. From the throw in the game lived up to expectations with both teams vying for possession in the middle of the field. They started to get the upper hand in the middle 3rd and kicked the first 3 points all long range efforts as our full back line held firm under severe pressure. Our lads began to string some good passes together and a brilliant move that started from a quick kick out ended in the back of the in their net. Sides level and game on - at this stage the play was end to end with the opposition being more accurate than ourselves and the ref called half time and we were down by 2 points 1-05 to Water on and quick word from the coaches and away we went. Whether it was bad water or bad words from the coaches but Newcastlewest put up the next 4 points in a row and now we were down by 6 and looking like we would be swamped but that's when these lads showed what they were made of. Now it was our turn to dominate and Mungret scored 1.03 without reply and again the match opened up with both teams trading scores goals and points so when the ref blew the final whistle even he wasn't sure what the score was never mind both teams. It was quite amusing to see 30 young lads surrounding(in a good way) the ref wanting to know the score. After what seemed an eternity to the boys he called a draw on a scoreline of NW 4.09 MSP Overall a very entertaining match and all 18 of the boys played their part. Squad on the nite was James Killian, Conor's White / Brennan / O'Halloran, Cillian O'Gorman, Mark's Supple and Moroney, Sean Donerama, Eoin Hennessey, Darragh Bridgeman, Jack McCarthey, Liam Lynch, Oisin Moss, Frank Corcoran, Billy Molineaux, Ryan O'Connell, Kieran Bolger, Colin Rochford U12 Football Inter County Blitz This Saturday we are hosting teams from Cork (Ballincollig) Kerry (Austin Stacks) and Clare (St Josephs Doorabarefild). We hope and encourage you all to call down to the club on Saturday morning to watch what promises to be a fantastic morning of Football. Throw in for 1st match at We would also like to ask all parents of the U12s to give a hand with the hall / food / tea etc as there will be approx 80 boys to be fed (+ coaches)afterwards. And lastly trip to Croke park next Tuesday the 30th June and the next league match is Thurs 2nd July away to Dromcollogher/Broadford. U12 Camogie v Adare Tuesday 2 June Our U12 camogie team travelled to the Manor Fields last Tuesday 2 June to take on Adare. We got off to a solid start in this match, with goals from Jenny Ryan and Grace O Keeffe giving us a nice cushion at half time, with the defence having had very little to do up to that point. The second half was a completely different affair, with our opponents striking early for a goal and then laying siege for most of the remainder of the match. A fine performance in goals from Tara Nealon, and teaktough defending from Aela Gleeson, Amy Connolly and Ella Mason saw us home in the end on a scoreline of 2-0 to 1-0. As both teams had a few subs, we played on at the end for a further ten minutes with all players on the pitch at the same time, and thanks to Adare for hosting us and for accommodating the extra period of play. Team: Grace O Keefe, Ella Murnane, Lucy Connolly, Aela Gleeson, Ciara Brennan, Ciara O Keeffe, Amy Connolly, Derbhala Smith, Sarah Butler, Aoife Ryan, Fiona Kinnevane, Tara Nealon, Bronagh Byrne, Ella Mason, Zoe Page, Jenny Ryan, Aisling McGuinness.
U12 Camogie v Treaty Gaels Thursday 11 June We had a huge turnout for our match away against Treaty Gaels on Thursday 11 June, and we agreed with treaty in advance to play the game over three fifteen-minute periods, to maximise the game time for as many players as possible. This was a cracking match which was in doubt up to the last puck of the match. Treaty struck first with a fine point from play, which they followed up with a goal just before the end of the first period of play to lead 1-1 to 0-0, with Aoife Ryan having played particularly well. We improved gradually in the second half, with Bronagh Byrne and Aisling McGuinness striking for goals to edge us in front, only to be pegged back again by what was admittedly a superb goal from the Treaty girls, who went in at the end of the second period of extra time leading 2-1 to 2-0. The girls were far from disheartened, however, and a re-jigged line-up went out for the third period of play and got completely on top, pushing into an eight point lead only to be pegged back again by our never-say-die opponents, who goaled with two mintes to go and pushed hard for the scores they needed to equalize. Mungret greeted the full-time whistle with relief, getting home on a scoreline of 5-0 to 3-2, and recording a notable achievement in this being the first time ever for this team to recover from an interval deficit to win. Team: Aela Gleeson, Zoe Page, Ciara O Keeffe, Ciara Brennan, Sarah Butler, Amy Connolly, Grace O Keeffe, Aoife Ryan, Aisling McGuinness, Jenny Ryan, Leah Nolan, Fiona Kinnevane, Caoimhe Holmes, Caoimhe Nestor, Bronagh Byrne, Ella Mason, Tara Nealon, Lucy Connolly, Derbhala Smith, Holly Roche. U14 Football Monday 15 June We greeted Rathkeale at home on Monday 15 June for a rescheduled U14 championship Division 3 match. We were slow out of the blocks here, with Rathkeale steaming through us at will in the early stages to run up a 1-2 to 0-0 lead. We continued to struggle in the first half, with Conor Murtagh extremely busy in goals, but Ewan O Dea steadied the ship in the back with a couple of great catches. David Hassett and Darragh Shelley came more into it, Tom Morrisson started connecting with the other forwards, and a pair of nice points from Dermot Moloney and Liam Lynch got us on the scoreboard, with Conor O Malley coming much more into it between midfield and center back. However we limped to the dug-out at half time lucky to trail by only 1-5 to 0-2, and without any significant aid from the elements to call on, it was hard to see how we could come back. But back we came. The forwards saw more ball in the first three minutes of the second half than they had managed in the entire first half, and when Dylan Scanlan put Dermot Moloney through for his second point, things were looking up. At this stage Conor Galvin and Brian O Meara really started causing trouble, running relentlessly at the opposition and setting Darragh O Hagan up for a clutch of scores. Rathkeale must have been wondering what was happening, as they had moved from totally dominating the first half to now being unable to get the ball past midfield, and any time they did Conor O Halloran and Keith McKeogh were more than up to the challenge. Jack Lloyd then rose to meet an incoming ball and surprised everyone by punching it goalwards, only to see it creep agonisingly wide. The Rathkeale goalie then came to the rescue with a remarkable double-save from Ciaran Kenny and Harry Page, the latter save made all the more frustrating by Wanda s photo of it which shows the goalie looking away with his eyes closed as he makes the save. Credit to him all the same. There was no stopping the next attempt though, and when Cathal Joy burst through to dispatch a screamer of a shot to the net, we were back to within a point with the crowd going wild. As happens so often in these situations, however, it was Rathkeaale who drew the next blood, putting away a penalty to restore the four point cushion. This set up a frantic final few minutes, with a David Barry touch almost unlocking the Rathkeale defence, but an additional O Hagan point was all we could muster and Rathkeale scraped home 2-6 to 1-6. Nontheless this was a fantastic performance from our lads which promises great days ahead. Team: Conor Murtagh, David Hassett, Ewan O Dea, Darragh Shelley, Conor O Halloran, Dermot Moloney, Brian O Meara, Conor O Malley, Conor Galvin, Tom Morrisson, Dylan Scanlan, Liam Lynch, Ciaran Kenny, Darragh O Hagan, Cathal Joy, Harry Page, Jack Lloyd, David Barry, Keith McKeogh. U14 Football v Monaleen 17 June Last Wednesday saw us confront our great rivals Monaleen for the first time this year in the Under 14 Division 3 Championship in their New Pitch. There has never been much between these teams and so it proved in the first half, with Liam Lynch and Cathal Joy registering early goals. Darragh O Hagan slotted a couple of nice points, though our opponents fought back strongly to leave us narrowly ahead 2-2 to 1-4 at half time, and with the promise of a strongish breeze behind us to come. However we failed to make use of it, and Monaleen completely dominated the third quarter, despite the best efforts of Dermot Moloney and Ewan O Dea at the back. We came back into it towards the end and a nice Conor galvin point put us back in the frame, but we could make no impression on the Monaleen defence, and we lost this one 4-4 to 2-4. Team: Conor Murtagh, David Hassett, Ewan O Dea, Darragh Shelley, Conor O Halloran, Dermot Moloney, Liam Lynch,
Conor Galvin, Dylan Scanlan, Tom Morrisson, Darragh O Hagan, Brian O Meara, Cathal Joy, Jack Lloyd, Ciaran Kenny, harry Page, David Barry, Keith McKeogh. U14 Hurling v Rathkeale Friday June 12 Our Under 14 second team were hoping for a reversal of fortune in the championship when they took on Rathkeale on June 12 away. We started very well here, and had a couple of pointed Barry Duff frees to show for our efforts within a few minutes. However Rathkeale began to hoover up a lot of ball around midfield, and the full back line of Billy Molyneaux, David Hassett and Ewan O Dea had to be very alert to close out some dangerous approach play from Rathkeale. Conor O Halloran showed some lovely touches in making space for some fine clearances, while Eamonn Flahive was on top of every loose ball from the center back position. The game was finely poised at 0-3 all when a high ball came in to the goal for Conor Murtagh to deal with. It looked to most observers like a straightforward catch and clearance, but Murtagh, having flown from Portugal specially for the match, decided that a little more excitement was in order. Like a Vegas diceman rolling the crapshot, he simply batted the ball out to an inrushing Rathkeale forward, stared into the whites of his eyes, and invited him to try again. The forward gathered, settled and pulled the trigger, but to his astonishment, he rolled snake eyes, as Murtagh dived for a fantastic save before nudging the ball to safety. At least, that s how Murtagh tells it. At the other end, Keith McKeogh was causing plenty of trouble and Ben O Sullivan was driving forward with purpose, at one stage creating a chance that Darragh Ryan gathered and shot goalwards, only to see it deflected agonizingly wide. The half continued to see-saw wildly, and we got in at half time ahead 0-5 to 0-4. We once more began the second half quickly, with Ciaran Kenny in particular paying no attention at all to the fact that his marker was a foot taller than him. Ben O Curry set up Dylan Scanlon for the first score of the second half. Tom Morrisson was fouled for another converted Duff free, a beauty from Conor Galvin pushed us further in front, before Harry Page started to make his presence felt. Harry earned a penalty, scored a goal, set up a goal and had another goal disallowed in a five minute spell that effectively swung the match in our favour. Not bad for a fella who turned up without a hurley or helmet, expecting a football match. Causing similar mayhem was Cathal Joy, who added a goal to a sweetly struck point on the run to push us further ahead and effectively put the game out of reach. We did concede a late goal but the final scoreline of 2-14 to 1-6 was a deserving reflection of a complete team performance. Team: Conor Murtagh, David Hassett, Billy Molyneaux, Ewan O Dea, Conor O Halloran, Eamonn Flahive, Barry Duff, Ciaran Kenny, Conor Galvin, Tom Morrisson, Ben O Sullivan, Cathal Joy, Darragh Ryan, Dylan Scanlon, Keith McKeogh, Harry Page, Ben O Curry. U16 Football The U16s took to the pitch for their first match of the Championship on Monday where they met Monaleen. They held the score in the first half but let it slip in the second half, only a few points in it Monaleen had the win. Photographs of this match will appear on the Website in the next few days.
