1 GAA National Club Draw Last year, the members and supporters of Na Fianna gave fantastic support to the club in purchasing tickets for the National Club Draw. In fact Na Fianna sold the highest number of tickets of all GAA clubs in the country. The final total of tickets sold was 1,647. This resulted in a fundraising amount of 16,470 for the club. It was a tremendous outcome for the club and highlighted the great commitment there is within the Na Fianna community to support our great club. Unfortunately at the Draw itself, which is held at GAA Annual Congress, no Na Fianna member won a prize but hopefully that will change this year. If it does not, the Club Executive Committee has decided that Na Fianna will hold an internal club draw for all those who purchased tickets. So we will definitely have a Na Fianna winner this year. Thanks to all those members and supporters who purchased tickets for last year's Draw. Weekend Fixtures Best of luck to U-18 Ladies footballers in Div 3 shield semi-final in Mobhi rd on Saturday at 3pm against Robert Emmetts and to Inter hurlers in league against Ballyboden in Mobhi Road at 5pm. Sunday starts with Camogie championship at 11am with Senior 1 s in semi final away against St Vincents and Senior 6 s making the short trip to Setanta. All three Minor football teams away at 11am in Championship, A s play Balinteer St Johns, B s are against St Marys and C s play Plunketts. Later at 3pm our Junior B hurlers play Round Towers Lusk in Mobhi road in league. Full fixture list, including details of another busy Championship weekend for juvenile teams, on website. 2 Sports Capital Grants As we continue to grapple with ongoing financial challenges it is with deep disappointment that we learned this week that our application for State support via the Sports Capital Grants scheme was refused. It is a bitter disappointment that despite glowing public comments of support for our work that our request for practical financial support to maintain and develop our community facilities has been rejected by our State. The matter has been tabled for discussion at next Tuesday night s Executive Committee agenda. Members Subscriptions Due It s that time of year again folks and subscriptions for the coming year are due and payable since the AGM (1 st October). Details of subscription rates and methods of payment are on the Club website Subscriptions can be paid on Saturdays in the Club or at the office during opening hours (9.30am to 1pm Mon Fri). Club Lotto This week s Na Fianna Club Lotto winning numbers were; No jackpot winner but congrats to our two Match 3 winners who wins 65 each, Damian Murphy and Ronan Gately c/o Vinny. Congrats also to our five Lucky Pick winners who won 15 each, Michael & Eileen Downes, Damien Mullan, Cheryl c/o Vinny, Neil Dunphy, Paddy Kenny See Club website for application forms and direct debit mandates. 3 Na Fianna Nursery Car Parking Thanks to all who cooperated during last Saturday morning s Nursery and to the volunteer stewards at the Club gates who gave of their time and ensured a free flowing morning. Members should note that these parking monitoring measures will continue to operate to ensure that everybody s Saturday morning experience at Na Fianna is a safe one. Not our wish by any means to annoy drivers but we would ask all attending the Saturday morning Nursery to adhere to the instructions of our volunteer stewards as we have to put the safety of children first. If you live close to the club, please help us by walking or cycling to the nursery if possible. If you have to drive, please park safely. Thank you for your continued cooperation. Club Shops Open Tomorrow The Club Hurley shop, located near the outdoor ball alley is open for business every Saturday morning. All your hurling needs and plenty of advice available here from Seosamh Breathnach. Members can avail of a special discount of 10 on the price of a new hurling helmet when they trade in their old one. If you didn t get to see it, it s worth a watch and can be seen on RTE Player. Team mentors are particularly encouraged to look at the programme as it s a topic we should be fully aware about when we send teams out on a pitch. 5 Rounders In Na Fianna For those who didn t know it, the game of Rounders is one of the official GAA sports. Rounders has been a GAA Sport from the origin of the Association and was included in the original GAA Charter back in It is played by all age groups, from National school children all the way up to and including senior level. There are both mixed teams where Boys and Girls, as well as Men and Women can play on the same team, as well as separate teams for Males & Females. As Rounders is a limited contact sport, it is perfect for both recreational and competitive play. It also draws on a different set of skills than the conventional GAA games and is very good for developing hand-eye coordination. And the good news is that Na Fianna, after a gap of forty or so years, is re-establishing Rounders in the Club. It is hoped to have a Demonstration Games(s) in Na Fianna very shortly. 6 U-15 Hurling Shield Finals Congrats to our U-15A hurlers (pictured above) on last Sunday s Shield Final win over Cuala with a scoreline of 5-13 to 3-7. The U-15B hurlers (pictured above) came agonisingly close to winning the U15C Shield final in a pulsating battle with Thomas Davis (the club, not the patriot!!) in Johnstown Park last Sunday. On a morning made for hurling the lads served up a performance full of skill, effort and courage. It was a real ding-dong affair with the lead changing hands several times 9ú Deireadh Fomháir

7 during the match. There were great scores, near misses, dogged defending, a sideline cut over the bar, and two saves by Neil Currie in the second half that drew gasps of appreciation from the spectators. We had fought back bravely to be a point in front with a few minutes remaining but Thomas Davis put in a strong finish to run out winners by 2-8 to 2-6. This was the culmination of a fine season for this group of players (our staring fifteen featured fourteen U15 players) and if they continue to improve at the same rate next year, we should definitely be in the shake-up for honours at U16 level. A special word of thanks to our U14 stalwarts who never let us down whenever called upon Girls Head For Final The Under 13 B Camogie team who defeated Cuala last weekend to advance to the Shield Final against Beann Eadair next week 2001 Boys Quiz Fundraiser The 2001 boys will hold a fundraising quiz in the Club on Thursday 22 nd October. In what s being called a Fun Team Quiz, the organisers are asking as many as possible to come along on the night and organise a table of 4, contribute a spot prize or even get a bit of sponsorship for what should be a great night. 8 Scór na nóg Na Fianna is looking for talented juveniles between the ages of 12 to 17 to represent the club off the pitch in Scór na nóg We are looking for traditional musicians, singers, story tellers and dancers. Please come along on the 18th October to Halla Na Fianna at 5pm if would like to take part. In the meantime, for further information contact Mairead Bhreathnach, Na Fianna s Culture and Language Officer on or walshmairead2@gmail.com Nursery Notes There will be a Nursery Parents Meeting on Wednesday 14th October at 8pm in the Mobhí Suite. This is designed to introduce new parents to the club, see what the club can do for you and what you can do for your club. Its main focus is about parents with kids entering the Nursery, exiting the Nursery into CCC1 and what to expect in between. Can we remind all parents to abide by parking restrictions in place on Saturday morning. We always need more help! If you would like to mentor, no experience required. If you do not want to mentor no problem, we need parents to kick back balls, mark out pitches and gather up gear after sessions. Just speak to any mentor at any time. All boys should have gum shields for playing football. While they are not compulsory, it is for their own good and will help the boys become accustomed to playing while wearing one. They are compulsory for progression to Go Games. Nursery from 9.30am again tomorrow. Scoil Mobhi Quiz Scoil Mobhi will hold a Table Quiz in Na Fianna on 15th October to raise funds for the school. 9 2002 Girls In Semi Finals Tomorrow Here s wishing every success to our three U-13 football teams performing in Semi Finals tomorrow, Saturday 10th October. Note differing start times! Division 1 team will be at home in Collinstown to St Brigid's 3pm throw in. Division 4 team will be away to Garristown in the North County - 3pm throw in. Division 6 team are away to St Oliver Plunketts, behind the 'Breffni Inn' off the Navan Road. 2pm throw in. PLEASE SUPPORT and remember mams, dads, grannies, granddads, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends all welcome! and finally We may not always say it but a huge debt of gratitude is due to the management and staff of St Vincents CBS who continue to make their pitches available to us exclusively. Without the use of these pitches it would be extremely difficult for Na Fianna to provide training and game facilities for a significant part of our Juvenile section. Na Fianna enjoys a very special relationship with St Vincents CBS and it is in all our interests to ensure that these facilities and the school area near the pitches are treated with the respect they deserve.
