JANUARY 12, 2018 JANUARY 29, 2016 2017 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CIF STATE CHAMPS ACCOLADES FOR THE YEAR By now everyone at Maranatha knows that we have a state champion girls volleyball team. We know they won CIF for the second year in a row and that their 34-1 win-loss record was tops in the state of California but it doesn t end there. On Tuesday, MaxPreps named Maranatha the Small School Team of the Year and coach Mary Beiler was awarded State Small School Coach of the Year. Earlier in the week, Amy Buffini was named to the 2017 MaxPreps Sophomore All-American Team. There were 23 girls throughout the United States that were given All-American honors and she is one of only two girls selected from California. She is Maranatha s first-ever All-American athlete. In addition, Amy was named 1st Team All-State as an outside hitter in the small schools division. She set Maranatha s single-season record with 471 kills, breaking her own record set the season before as a freshman. Not to be outdone, sister Alysha Buffini was named 2nd Team All-State as a setter. Alysha had 771 assists in 2017 and led the team in service aces with 83. Both Buffini sisters have demolished most of Maranatha s all-time records in only two seasons of play. Amy s career total of 785 kills exceeds her closest challenger by more than 200. Alysha s 1198 career assists are nearly double the amount of the previous leader. Both sisters are 1st & 2nd in service aces with Amy edging out Alysha 200 to 184. The team s overall record is 60-5 since the twins transferred to the school as freshmen from Christian LIFE Academy in 2016. Congratulations to all for a magnificent season! Truly the Lord has blessed us! C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S 2017 Coach Mary Beiler State Small Schools Coach of the Year
