Great Plains Wood Carvers Newsletter May 2014 Wichita, KS CARVING OF THE MONTH APRIL MEETING 1

There was a good turnout for the Carving of the Month with five participants. David Valentine shared has secrets for carving a wooden tie. Walt Kuykendall was the winner with his young Dahl Sheep He shared how he bleached the wood to get a brighter white. Bob Cain showed his very cute Raggedy Ann carved from tupelo and painted in oils. Roy Hosie brought his Big Horn Ram that he carved this past winter in Texas. Bryan Moody brought a unique holder for quarters. His girlfriend is in a pool league and the pool tables take quarters. It is made from a dowel which was personalized using a power engraver. The cap screws on using a light socket adapter. TREASURER The treasury is in good shape and we have funds for show expenses. SECRETARY The secretary asked for and received checks to pay for stamps, both for the newsletter and for post cards to mail for the upcoming show.. OUR SHOW The following is a combination of the business meeting, the show meeting, and current events. Bob Munroe put out a plea for the members to sell raffle tickets. Get your tickets and sell, sell, sell. Let s see who can overwhelm Bob with their sales figures. Merry Beckham is looking for items for the drawing at the brunch. Think about what you can contribute. (It is better to give than to receive.) Sue Clarke and Ethel Monroe have volunteers for the admission and drawing tables. She can always use some volunteers for backup. Sharla Michaels sent out a press release. A total of 300 post cards have been sent to previous visitors. Emails are being sent to previous visitors. Arrangements have been made for an ad in the Eagle and for spots on KMUW. KWCH is looking for a carver to interview on the Brett & Sierra Show. Jenny Benitez, our contact at the senior center at Park City, has graciously agreed to email the press release and the flyer to area senior centers. Roy Hosie s daughter has supplied a list of contacts with area museums which are being sent a poster. Roy is also working on a list of senior residence halls to contact. So far, we have sold 57 tables. 2

Hello everyone, A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT I hope you re making plans to gear up for the show. It will be here in the blink of an eye. PLEASE, PLEASE, if you haven't signed up to help out make sure you do so by getting hold of Sue Clark. If you need more tickets for the raffle get hold of Bob Munroe. Get your door prize donations for the brunch to Merry Beckham or at least call her to let her know you will be bringing them to the brunch. We will also will be needing volunteers for a set up crew and tear down crew the day of the show. Many members have helped with this in the past and it is greatly appreciated. Together as a group we will make this a wonderful show. It has been really pleasant to see everyone who shows up to the meetings and see the crowd growing. Bob, Walt and I talked with the people at Spears to see if we can make more room with a different table layout... Wow what a great problem to have! Thank each and everyone of you who have stepped up to help out. IT'S SHOWTIME!! Gregg PROGRAM Marty Kuehler shared two of his creations made from old fence boards. The first is a miniature double-wide outhouse used to hold wine bottles. Note the leather hinges on the door and the detail in the shingles. His second item is cooler for the patio. It is built around an ice chest and decorated in a WSU motif. Note the bottle opener and the drain valve. Marty shared some of his building secrets and how he obtained the materials. 3
