Passion and Purpose: Why Gene Decker '80 Runs «Back Passion and Purpose: Why Gene Decker '80 Runs By Chris Velardi '95

When Dr. Eugene Decker 80 crosses the finish line of the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on Saturday, January 12, he won t be alone. A little girl weak from cancer, bald from chemo, determined to inspire will be with him, as she always is. I see that little girl every day I run, says Decker, who runs literally every day. Decker finds tremendous motivation in that little girl, who was in the final months of a four-year cancer battle when he heard her mother share their family s story at the aptly named Inspiration Dinner on the eve of this same race a few years ago. Decker runs for that little girl and for the countless people, many of them his patients, who have battled blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. He runs for people he knows well, like Erin Boyle DeWatt, a two-time survivor who is the mother of two of the runners on the cross-country team Decker coaches, and people he only knows of, like Syracuse legend Ernie Davis 62, who died of leukemia at the age of 23. If Ernie Davis were diagnosed today, he may not have died, says Decker, a huge Syracuse sports fan who bleeds Orange. I thought about that when I came back to campus for the Louisville football game this season. That s why we had to get a photo of Team Decker in front of the Davis statue. Team Decker is Decker and his wife Debra 81, his sons Eric and Dylan, Eric s girlfriend Alyssa, and Dylan s wife Stephanie. Everyone but Debra, who everyone knows as Team Decker s biggest cheerleader, will be lacing up their running shoes for the race as part of Teamin-Training, the primary fundraising program for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Decker s team has grown as his passion for this cause has grown. It began a few years ago when Decker, an avid runner and self-described Disney Nut I could go there thousands of times and not get bored was looking for a new challenge. A half marathon through the theme parks he loved, benefiting those battling blood cancers, was a perfect fit. This is about real people many have been my patients, says Decker, a family physician in Phillipsburg, N.J. who is the clinical director of the residency program at St. Luke s University Health Network s Warren Campus. I keep meeting new people who have blood cancers and I spend an hour talking to them about their battles and their stories. While those stories fuel Decker s passion, his community provides the necessary support to make his efforts successful. The first year I did this, we raised $11,000, recalls Decker. I sent emails, knocked on doors, held fundraisers, whatever I could do to get donations. Dangerous lightning canceled that race at the last minute, but Decker vowed to return. The next year, Decker raised more than $16,500.

This year, Team Decker raised $21,249 thus far and is over $50,000 cumulative over the past 4 years in donations, putting it among Team-in-Training s national leaders. We organized a 5K, local restaurants did fundraiser nights, my wife did Painting for Purpose, my son and girlfriend did cookie sales; this just keeps growing! says Decker, who has been asked to speak at this year s Inspiration Dinner.

One of Decker s favorite fundraisers wasn t a huge moneymaker, but it was a special tribute. The students at Saint Jane Frances de Chantal School, where Decker is a coach, held a dress-down day. Instead of their regular school uniforms, everyone wore Decker s favorite color: Orange. The kids I coach only know me as wearing Orange, says Decker. That really brings it all together for me my story, Ernie Davis, this is part of what Syracuse is all about giving back. Decker considers his participation in the Disney Half Marathon the perfect pay-off for his passions his wife and family, running, Disney, Syracuse, and LLS. I know the money goes to cures, it goes to transportation for patients, it goes to people who need it, says Decker. I know first-hand what this charity does and the great work it does. And Decker knows first-hand how many people rely on that work. He knows because he sees them every day when he runs.

IT S HawkWalk TIME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! It is time to begin planning for the 11 th anniversary of our HawkWalk event! As many of you already know, this is our spring fundraiser and has been very successful for the past 10 years. Through HawkWalk and other fundraisers, the HSA has previously been able to make major improvements to our school, including security upgrades, air conditioning for our buildings, new bathroom facilities, and the purchase of nearly 400 chrome books for the students. How exciting! This year our goal is to raise enough funds for classroom furniture, seating for the chapel, and technology upgrades. We need your help!! The HawkWalk committee will be holding their first meeting on Monday, Feb. 4 th at 6:30pm in the Conference Center (the building next to the school). We will continue to meet weekly as needed until the day of the event, which is Friday, April 26 th. There are several tasks that need to be completed over the next few months to be sure we have another successful event. If you think you can help in any way, please fill out the form below and return it to Michelle Van Wert c/o Kieran Van Wert K2. **Please note: If you are only able to help the day of the event, there will be a separate volunteer request form sent in March. Thank you in advance for joining our group! I would like to help with the HSA HawkWalk. Name: Email address: Phone Number:
