Race 5: BOSS CONSTRUCTIONS QLD CLASS 3 H'CAP - 1800M HEREAFTER - rider Glen Colless reported that it had not been his intention to lead, however the horse overraced with the addition of blinkers today. LUCKY DAY KID - rider Janette Johnson was asked to explain her tactics, particularly in positioning the horse in the second half of the field, which is in contrast to its racing pattern, and also her riding from the 600m onwards. She explained that she had anticipated being in a forward position, however despite her riding in the early stages the horse could not muster sufficient early speed and she was obliged to take up a position in the second half of the field. She explained that after passing the 600m she attempted to improve to the inside of SWITCH ON which in her opinion would have taken her into the race, however when that horse did not quicken she was obliged to steady and shift out across that horse's heels to secure clear running. She said she was mindful of instructions which were to secure clear running away from the fence if possible. Trainer B. Guy confirmed these instructions and added that in hindsight apprentice Johnson may have been better served in improving on the fence. He accepted that due to his instructions Ms Johnson's actions could be explained. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered. STATING - raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to take up a forward position passing the 1200m. ARDROVA - slow to begin. GOLD DEAL - slow to begin. THIRSTY FOR BLOOD - obliged to check from the heels of TALLAHATCHIE near the 500m. FELON - trainer B. Crowley was interviewed regarding the horse's improved performance. He indicated that following the horse's start at the Sunshine Coast on 14 June he had freshened the horse up and added a tongue control bit and a nasal strip to the horse's gear. Following this the horse had shown an improved performance at its most recent start and he had expected a forward showing in today's event. Stewards noted Mr Crowley's comments and took no further action. DENMARK HILL - hung out throughout the event. Trainer P. Evans was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse's racing manners. VANCOUVER GOLD - shifted in despite the efforts of its rider near the 500m, resulting in TALLAHATCHIE having to be checked when tightened for room. MUSIC OF LIFE - overraced in the early stages. SPEEDY GRAPHITO - inconvenienced when tightened for room approaching the 200m between BALGOWNIE and SAN CLEMENTE, which shifted out. Jason Taylor, the rider of SAN CLEMENTE, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Stewards questioned
rider Ric McMahon regarding his tactics when rounding the home turn he elected to remain to the inside of BALGOWNIE rather than shift wider around that horse, which would have afforded him clear running in the straight. He indicated that he felt racing to the inside of BALGOWNIE was the better option as he wished to avoid racing wider on the track as he believed with the rail position today this was an inferior racing surface. He added that prior to SAN CLEMENTE shifting out he had been afforded clear running to the inside of BALGOWNIE. Stewards noted jockey McMahon's explanation.
