Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Hello to all! Notes from the Board In last month s newsletter, I wrote about two issues we needed to address. First was the lack of attendees buying drinks at the bar from Jenny. The situation has improved a bit, but, to be honest, we need more, so please keep doing your part, buying your drinks at the dance rather than bringing in drinks from the outside. Jenny needs to sell 35-40 drinks per night just to pay for her time, beverages, and miscellaneous items for drink service. The second issue pertains to our need for the club to make money every week, or at least, to break even. (Believe it or not, we have not broken even any week this year!) As board members, we have all come to the same conclusion, which is that it is time to raise our dance fees. Remember, there has not been an increase in fees since 2011, and inflation waits for no man or woman or child! On a third matter, you have no doubt already noticed that we have begun to mix it up a bit, experimenting with new formats for our mixer. Since the point of the mixer is to give new people the chance to meet our members and for members to get to know each other better, please participate rather than visiting at your tables. Everybody should be made to feel as if they are part of the fun. As always, your board members welcome your feedback and suggestions. The new dues structure and dance admission schedule will be as follows. Yearly membership dues stay the same at $25 Admission for members - $10 Advanced Dance lessons for members - $5 Admission for guests - $15 Advanced Dance lessons for guests - $5 Admission for students - $5 Advanced Dance lessons for students - $5 Admission paid by anyone: Beginner Dance lessons in small ballroom free These new rates will go into effect Sunday June 4th We certainly hope to see everyone dancing and having a great time. Dance Instruction May From our Dance Instructor Chairman Ben Davis We welcome Xavier Medina as our professional instructor this month. He plans to teach Samba for partnership dancing and he will teach Samba as a line dance if the students are interested. Originally from Marion, Indiana Xavier studied dance at the Community School of the Arts in Marion. There he studied a variety of dances including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Modern, and Hip Hop. However for thirteen years he has thrived and continued to learn International Ballroom. He founded the Indiana University Ballroom Dance Company which has continued to perform at various venues. Xavier is happy to continue sharing his experience and growth through teaching at Riolo Dance Studio. And we are pleased to have him as our instructor for May. For the beginners, May will be American Rhythm month. Ben Davis will teach Cha Cha week one, Rhumba week two, Swing week three, and Review all three on week four. The lesson will be held in the small ballroom. We thank our last month s professional instructor, Monica Lung for teaching East Coast Swing, as well as our volunteers Dave and Sue Berard for teaching East Coast to beginners Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lesson without permission of the instructor. Do you own a business? Consider running an ad in our newsletter or talk to a friend who might be interested in running an ad. Our newsletter reaches more than 300 people and the rates are quite reasonable. Substantial savings in monthly rates can be realized by running an ad for six months or a year. Your ad does not need to be copy ready. We will work with you. Please contact Darrel Trexler at 317-722-0133 or continentaldanceclub@yahoo.com. Kids Dance Outreach, by Carol Kussmann For the past two years, we have donated 50% of our 50/50 drawing dollars to KDO. I'm delighted to let you know that dollar amount came to $700 each year. After watching this incredible group, I decided to bring an idea to our board that might enable our dance community to grow our support further. So, starting with our first dance in May and then the first Sunday of each month, you will find a container for cash donations that will go 100% to KDO on our name tag table. If you would like a record for tax purposes, make your check out to Kids Dance Outreach. I thought you would all enjoy reading the delightful thank you note we received from KDO. " Just getting a moment to thank you and all of your members for welcoming Kids Dance Outreach, our students and our families to join you last Sunday night. We had a wonderful time with you and the children will never for get your encouragement, cheers and applause for them. It is very special what is happening and it is made possible by your generosity and support. Many thanks, PS : I stayed a bit to watch you all dance and was wonderful to see and your band was excellent. Thank you for including us. All my best. " Michael J. MY CDC TANYA MARSHALL All week, I look forward to getting dressed up and coming to the dance on Sunday night, said Tanya Marshall, telling me she first started dancing at Continental back in 1988, turning into a regular only over the past year. It s just a great opportunity to meet new people and develop friendships, not to mention my absolute love for dancing, she added. I m intrigued with all styles of dance, whether it s ballroom, West-Coast Swing, Argentine tango, nightclub, or country two-step Dancing is like oxygen for my soul, the petite dyamo shared. For the past 26 years Tanya has owned the Heavenly Sweets bakery in downtown Noblesville, a business she founded and which she continues to operate. Combining lessons gleaned from earlier experiences as a bookkeeper and work in hotel banquet kitchens, this energetic entrepreneur has earned many awards and accolades for her wedding cakes. Tanya is wonderful to work with and the cake was beyond everyone s expectations! I wish there had been more left. I don t know what they put in these cakes but they are absolutely the best. Those are just two of the many rave comments from customers. At the adjacent R.L. Wilson House, the historic mansion Marshall owns, I learned, Heavenly Sweets offers artisan catering for corporate meetings, rehearsal dinners, and intimate family gatherings. In November of last year, Tanya s Thanksgiving recipes won her a national championship on Food Network s Clash of the Grandmas. All of our life experiences, whatever they may be, Tanya reflected, are stepping stones in our life s journey. In fact, her Food Network appearance led to an opportunity of a different sort, as Tanya became the new spokesperson for the Indiana Hearing Aid company s Hear Indiana campaign. (CDC members can catch Tanya s commercials on WTHR.) A superb inspiration for three sons and six grandchildren, not to mention her many dance friends, Tanya has recently become what she calls a health nut, working out four to five mornings each week, and taking dance lessons 2-3 nights a week. After boasting of all the weight she had lost on her new regimen, Tanya insisted I select some luscious cupcakes to take home, assuring me she felt honored to be part of the Continental History Spotlight. The pleasure, I assured her, was all mine! - by board member Rhoda Israelov SPEEDWAY HIGH SCHOOL SPRING FLING Continental Dance Club members have been invited to join in the fun at Speedway High School as the school celebrates their Spring Fling on Friday, May 19th from 7-9 p.m. Music will be provided by the Starlighters Big Band and the West 25th Street Jazz Band.
