Attendance Line 867-6401 Oak Trace Tribune JANUARY 8, 2016 A Message from Mrs. Lynch Happy 2016! I hope everyone had a great holiday! It is nice to be back at school and in the routine. Today we had a special visitor! State Superintendent Glenda Ritz stopped by to visit Oak Trace. Learning Clubs have started back up! If your child participates in Learning Clubs, please know that we will communicate with you closely on cancellations and make-up times for sessions missed due to weather. If we have a delay, we will plan to start our clubs later that morning. We do have our club/extra-curricular picture day on Monday. If your child has been involved in the many clubs (choir, spellbowl, mathbowl, student council, etc.) please have them wear their shirt on Monday for pictures. The Pacer ticket information that went home prior to the holiday break is due the end of this moth.. This is a great way to purchase tickets and at the same time help Oak Trace. Our community night will be March 17th. This should be a fun night! Please send your returned packets in with your child if you do wish to purchase tickets. Have a nice weekend and be sure to come to our Oak Trace Night at WHS Saturday evening to cheer on the Rocks! Oak Trace students will get in free of charge with the flyer attached to this newsletter! PE ZONE It's a new year and time to think about healthy new year's resolutions! Here a few the suggestions I shared with students; Healthy Kids New Year s Resolutions! I will FUEL UP with drinks like reduced-fat milk and water every day, and drink soda and fruit drinks only at special times. I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike) that I like so I can PLAY 60 everyday!! I ll be friendly to kids who may have a hard time making friends by asking them to join activities such as sports or games. I will try to talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I have a problem or feel stressed. I will have an I CAN attitude even when things are difficult. Happy New Year! Mrs. PEggy Grimmer LIBRARY Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with their families! It's always so nice to have that time off and come back refreshed! We have so much to look forward to in the next several months! Our visiting author, Aaron Reynolds, will be here on March 23rd to share his story about becoming an author and talking about his latest award-winning book, Creepy Carrots! They boys and girls are so excited about this! We will also have our 2nd Book Fair in May! Always a great time to pick up some great books for summer reading! In the library, this week, I have been reviewing how to use our online catalog system, Destiny, to locate books! Our 2nd through 4th graders are getting more and more proficient in doing this! So exciting to see! With Kindergarten and 1st grade, we have been taking a look at other Aaron Reynolds books! We will read as many as we can before his comes to Oak Trace in March! Happy Reading! Mrs. Lane Happy Reading!
ART Kindergarten artists are creating a winter penguin collage. This week we started our background. We used many different hues for our background and we will be using neutral colors for our penguin! 1st grade artists are creating a portrait of a person catching snowflakes on their tongue. This mixed media project uses a variety of painting, stamping, and collage techniques to create a portrait from an unusual angle. 2nd grade artists are studying Claude Monet and impressionist art. We are using bright colors and texture in our painting of lily pads! 3rd grade artists are learning about Georgia O'Keefe. We will be draw our flower BIG, just like Georgia did! 4th grade artists are learning about the famous Hoosier artist Robert Indiana! We will be creating our own sculptural poem inspired by Indiana's LOVE artwork. Our Artist of the Month is Theo Jansen. He creates kinetic sculptures called Strandbeest.. They can walk on their own, powered only by wind. They will on exhibit at Chicago Cultural Center from February 6 - May 01, 2016. If you would like to build your own mini Strandbeest (similar to K'nex), kits can be purchased here: http://www.strandbeest.com/shop/index.php Mindy Stephenson Art Teacher
