April 22, 2014 Dear Students & Parents, Get ready for the best Paint Branch Marching Band ever! The Marching Band is the most active, energetic and visible music group at Paint Branch. We perform at football games, parades, and competitions throughout the fall season. Our band had a very successful 2013-2014 season, with the LARGEST band in 10 years! Join us and become a member of this fun, exciting and growing ensemble! At this time you need to reserve your spot with the 2014 Marching Panthers. By registering, you are committing yourself for the entire Fall 2014 season. Please complete the attached forms and return them with your deposit of $100 by Friday, May 2 nd. This deposit reserves your spot on the field for our halftime show. It also covers many of the costs associated with the marching season - competition fees, transportation, staff stipends, and uniform maintenance. There is an additional one-time fee for students who need marching shoes, gloves, and the t-shirt. If you need financial assistance for any item, contact Mr. Kirchhoff for scholarship information. These rehearsals are STRONGLY recommended for all marchers to learn music and marching techniques before the summer begins. Summer Band Camp will begin on Monday, August 11 th at 9:00 a.m. The 2014 Band Camp schedule is attached to this letter. Attendance at these rehearsals is mandatory in order to learn your music and marching drill for the season. You will find a tentative schedule for the entire season attached to this packet. June 3 rd & 4 th Boot Camp Rehearsals - 3:30 5:30 All members of the 2014 Marching Band should plan to attend two rehearsals on June 3 rd & 4 th. Students will learn music for the fall season s halftime shows, fundamental marching techniques, and experience the energy and excitement of the marching band family. These rehearsals are STRONGLY recommended to set us up for success in the fall. Students who wish to be on the Drumline and Colorguard MUST be at these rehearsals if they plan to play a marching drum or perform with the Colorguard in the fall. Drumline auditions may be held to assign a percussion instrument to each prospective member of the drumline. The Boot Camp will be held in the Paint Branch Music Room (1115). Enter at the front of the building and look for a Marching Band Member to lead you to our room! Band Camp Schedule Band Camp begins on Monday, August 11 th and runs Monday through Friday for two weeks. ALL Band Camp rehearsals will be held at Paint Branch HS, and will begin in room 1115. Students must attend marching band camp to ensure a successful season. Week 1: Monday, August 11 th 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. PARENT MEETING 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12 th 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13 th 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thurs & Fri, 8/14 & 8/15 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Week 2: August 18 th through 20 th 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21 st 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. (freshman picnic) Friday, August 22 nd 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. then POOL PARTY There will be a lunch break each day during Week 1 from 12:00-1:00. Students may not leave campus, but parents may drop off a lunch for their child. DINNER will be provided on Monday, 8/11 and Wednesday, 8/13. Dinner on these days will be held from 5:00-5:45. There will be a performance for family and friends, and a pool & pizza party in the evening on Friday, August 22 nd. Details will be announced at band camp. Rehearsal Schedule During the School Year Rehearsals during the school year will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. All rehearsals are mandatory. If you play a fall sport and are worried about a possible conflict, contact Mr. Kirchhoff ASAP to see if you may still participate in the marching band.
Football Games The band performs pre-game and halftime shows at home games, and plays in the stands at away games. All HOME games and TWO AWAY GAMES are mandatory. Additional games will only be required if the team makes it to the MD State Playoffs. When the football team has a home game, the band will rehearse that day immediately after school. This is a dress rehearsal for that day s game. All game-day rehearsals must be attended in order to perform at that game. Competitions The marching band will participate in 3-4 competitions during the 2014 season. Competitions are held on Saturdays, and take most of the day due to rehearsal, travel time, our performance, and the awards ceremony. PLEASE leave your entire day free on competition days. Detailed schedules for each competition will be published 10-14 days in advance of each competition. Competitions are a GREAT experience for our marchers, and we look forward to building on the success of our band s awesome 2014 season! Marching Band Social Activities Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions are the best competitive Marching Bands in the world, made up of young men and women between 14-21 years old. They rehearse all summer, and compete around the country. Go to www.dci.org for event information. I strongly encourage everyone to attend a DCI event if possible to see what marching bands are capable of. Thursday, August 7 th 6:30 p.m. - BIG, LOUD & LIVE 10 DCI Quarterfinals broadcast LIVE into local movie theaters on the big screen. This is an awesome event that will last about 4 hours. Check www.dci.org/cinema for time and locations later this summer. Paint Branch marching band staff and section leaders plan to attend the show at the Columbia AMC 14 Theater. Tickets usually cost about $17 for this 5-hour marching event. Feel free to join us!
