2008 YEAR IN REVIEW Ryan Page A new era of Liberty Baseball began in 2008, as Jim Toman took over the reins of the program. Under his guidance, the Flames posted their fourth consecutive 30 or more wins season, recording a 35-26-1 mark. The Toman-led team s 35 victories were the most under a first year coach in school history. In addition, it was the first time in the 35-year history of the program that Liberty recorded 30 or more wins in four consecutive years. The 2008 squad tied the school record for conference wins, going 14-7 during the Big South regular season, and later went on to make their third straight appearance in the Big South Championship title game. During the 2008 Big South Championship, which was hosted by the Flames in Danville, Va., Liberty posted four consecutive double-digit victories, enabling it to set a championship record with 55 total runs scored. The Flames also broke school marks at the plate and on the mound. Led by four players with 19 or more doubles, Liberty breaking the previous program mark of 151, with 155 two-base hits. The total led the Big South in the category and ranked the Flames third nationally. Not to be outdone, the 2008 pitching staff shattered the school strikeout mark with 508 strikeouts, 103 more than the previous standard of 405. The total lead the Big South Conference. Right-hander Dustin Umberger finished the season as the Big South s leader with 88 strikeouts, while fellow right-hander David Stokes was second in the conference with 86. The 2008 Flames started their season off in grand style by sweeping through all three of their contests at the Clearwater Invitational. Liberty opened the year with the school s first ever win over Notre Dame, 6-2. The following evening after having their morning contest suspended over four hours due to heavy rain, the Flames edged Albany, 5-4. Sunday, Liberty finished the weekend behind the first of many strong pitching performances by senior Stokes, downing Iowa, 3-1. Staying on the road, the Flames remained unbeaten on the young season with a 5-1 victory over Norfolk State behind freshman outfielder Doug Bream s three RBIs. A few days later, Liberty opened it home schedule with a 4-3 win over Rider in the first of a three game series. The next day, the Broncs ended the Flames five game win streak with a 5-4 victory. Liberty bounced back the following afternoon, pounding out 21 hits in an 18-2 win. Senior Aaron Grijalva paced the Flames by going 4-for-5 in the contest with four RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles and a triple. Out to an early 6-1 start, Liberty saw a reversal of fortune in the midweek, falling on the road to VCU, 5-4 and against Old Dominion at home, 9-7. On the weekend, Army visited Worthington Stadium for a three game series. The Flames took both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, 11-5 and 13-7, before completing the set with a 15-7 victory on Sunday. Highlighting the weekend was Bream s first collegiate home run in the second game of the doubleheader, which was a grand slam. A week later, Toman s squad found a rough welcome in Hattiesburg, Miss., during the Coca Cola Classic. On Friday, Cal. State Northridge defeated the Flames, 11-7. On Saturday, host Southern Miss shutout Liberty, 5-0, in the morning, while Cal. State Northridge handed the Flames a 9-2 setback in the afternoon. During the following week, James Madison edged the Flames, 3-2, to make the team s season ledger, 9-7. Liberty then split a four-game series with Columbia. The set was moved to Lynchburg s City Stadium. In the opener on Thursday, eight different Flames hit doubles as Liberty held off the Lions, 13-10. Friday, Columbia took both ends of a doubleheader, 11-6 and 7-3, before Umberger restored order on Saturday with seven strong innings of work in a 12-2, Flames victory. After a setback at George Mason during the middle of the week, Liberty return home for a three game series with defending Big South Champion and No. 18 Coastal Aaron Grijalva David Stokes Carolina. Friday s series opener was a historic night in Liberty program history, as it was the first game at Worthington Stadium contested under the lights. Before a record 3, 183 fans, the Flames and Chanticleers battled through 11 innings, before the visitors came away with a 5-3 victory. The following afternoon, Liberty struck for five runs in the third on their way to evening the series at 1-1, with a 9-6 win. In the finale of the series on Sunday, junior Cody Brown hit a home run, but it wasn t enough as the Flames fell 2-1 to finish the month of March with a 12-12 mark on the year. In the midweek, William & Mary and Norfolk State handed Liberty setbacks to begin April. The Tribe defeated the Flames, 9-7, while Norfolk State took an 8-5 victory. After being shutout in the opening game of a three game Big South series at UNC Asheville, the Flames came back to take the series with consecutive victories. Saturday, catcher Errol Hollinger had four hits and designated hitter Garrett Young drove in seven runs with a double and a grand slam, as the Toman s squad won a wild, back-and-forth slugfest over the Bulldogs, 14-13, in 10 innings. Sunday, senior outfielder P.K. Keller had four hits and drove in three RBIs to help freshman left-hander Steven Evans to his first collegiate win in an 11-4 victory. James Madison shutout the Flames, 4-0, at home and No. 19 Virginia won a 7-3 victory over visiting Liberty during their next midweek contests. Entering a Big South weekend series at Radford with a 14-17 record, Liberty swept the three game series with the Highlanders to even their season s mark at 17-17. In Friday s series opener, Hollinger hit two home runs, including the go ahead round tripper in the top of the ninth for a 5-4 win. The following afternoon, seniors David Giammaresi and Keller each had three hits, as Liberty led from start to finish, 18-4. Sunday, the Flames completed the sweep with a 12-5 victory. This time, Giammaresi and 56 2009 Liberty Baseball

2008 YEAR IN REVIEW P.K. Keller Hollinger led the Liberty attack with three hits apiece. Freshman outfielder Joseph Feeley added four RBIs. Liberty made it four straight wins with a 13-3 Tuesday victory at William & Mary. Evans held the Tribe to two hits and two runs over seven frames and first baseman Giammaresi hit a grand slam in the Flames win. However, Virginia Tech snapped the short winning streak with an 11-1 victory on Wednesday. With a 6-3 conference record heading into the weekend, Toman s team faced VMI at Worthington in an important Big South three game series. Behind eight shutout innings by Stokes, Liberty took the opener of the set on Friday, 8-0. The following afternoon, the Flames and the Keydets hooked up in the longest game in Liberty history, as VMI eked out a 6-5, 16-inning win. On Sunday, senior left-hander Ryan Page pitched a complete game, helping the Flames take the series with a 6-1 win. In the midweek, James Madison, who went on to participate in the NCAA Tournament in 2008, continued its hex on the 2008 team, coming from behind for a 10-7 Tuesday victory in Harrisonburg. The following night, Brown drove in four runs with a two-run home run and a pair of doubles in an 11-3 win at Old Dominion. Liberty closed out the month of April with a three-game Big South weekend series at Winthrop and a single game at home against George Mason. Host Winthrop took twoof-three from the Flames in the series, sandwiching a 7-6 middle game setback between 10-5 and 8-7 wins. Three days later, Liberty completed their April schedule, dropping a 7-6 decision to George Mason in 11 innings. The Flames entered the month of May with a 22-23 overall record and a 9-6 conference mark. But, Toman s team would have a strong fifth month of the year, posting the most victories and best winning percentage in the month in program history. Liberty rolled to a 13-3-1 mark down the stretch for a.794 winning percentage. The Flames opened May with a three-game sweep of Charleston Southern in conference play. Stokes pitched his second complete game and Giammaresi, Brown and Feeley each hit home runs in an 8-3 Friday win over the host Buccaneers. On Saturday, Liberty completed the sweep by taking both ends of a doubleheader, 13-2 and 8-2. In the second game of the twinbill, Page would equal Stokes performance of the day before, going the full nine innings for the victory. In the midweek, Liberty won its fourth straight contest with a 7-6 Wednesday win at Virginia Tech. Senior shortstop Aaron Phillips hit a grand slam, as the Flames raced out to a 7-0 lead and Evans pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, en route to the victory. Liberty continued its winning streak on the weekend, sweeping a doubleheader at Longwood, 5-3 and 12-4. In the first game, Umberger pitched his first complete game, striking out six batters. The strikeouts helped the Flames set a new season school strikeout mark. The following afternoon in Lynchburg, heavy rains caused a 3-3 game to be halted and declared a tie between the two teams. Having posted a 6-0-1 record in May, Toman s team continued their unbeaten run with a midweek victory over VCU, 10-3. Keller paced the Flames with three hits and two RBIs and Hollinger hit a three-run home run in their last midweek game of the regular season. Liberty closed the regular season at home against Big South foe High Point, needing two wins to secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Friday, Giammaresi had four hits, driving in two RBIs in an 8-1 win over the Panthers for the program. The win was the 30th victory of the season for the Flames, making it four consecutive years of 30 or more wins. The following day, Toman s squad wrapped up the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Big South Championship with a 5-4 win. Sunday, the final day of the regular season, saw High Point win 8-4 on a rainy day in Lynchburg. With a 31-24-1 overall mark and a 14-7 Big South record, the Flames entered the 2008 Big South Championship, as the No. 2 seed. Liberty was also the Aaron Philips David Giammaresi host of the tournament, which was played at Dan Daniel Memorial Park in Danville, Va. The Flames opened against No. 6 seed Radford, Wednesday. The lower seed Highlanders had the better of it on the day, handing Liberty a 15-4 setback. Thursday, the Flames rebounded to eliminate No. 8 seed UNC Asheville, 10-1. Freshman outfielder Jeff Jefferson had four hits and three RBIs in the contest to back the seven scoreless innings by senior starter Page. Before the game, Keller was named to the Big South All-Conference first team, while Hollinger and Stokes received second team honors. Friday morning, Umberger pitched a complete game, striking out 10 to lead Liberty past Radford, 11-2. The junior right-hander allowed two runs on six hits to record his eighth win of the year. Young had four hits in the contest, while Brown added three for the victors. In the evening, the Flames moved into the title game, downing No. 4 seed Winthrop, 15-3. Jefferson had five hits to pace a 17-hit attack, as Liberty scored eight times in the second inning to pull away for the victory against the Eagles. Saturday, the Flames made their third consecutive Big South title game appearance against No. 1 seed and No. 13 ranked Coastal Carolina. Starter Evans allowed one run over eight innings and Young had four hits to force a second game for the Big South Championship in a 13-1 win, the fourth straight double-digit victory for Liberty.
