December County 4-H Council Meeting The next County 4-H Council Meeting is scheduled for: Thursday, December 13, 6:30 pm at the Extension Office Everyone is welcome to attend but, please be especially sure to send your County 4-H Council Club Voting Representatives! Setting up for the Awards banquet to follow. 4-H Welding Meeting December 15th at 11:00am here at the Otero County Extension Office Classroom This will be a meet and greet sign-up meeting. Please RSVP to the extension office at 575-437-0231 Senior Leadership Retreat: Catching a wave to leadership Senior Leadership Retreat (SLR) will be held January 18-20, 2019 in Albuquerque. All Senior 4-H members are eligible to attend (ages 14-18, must have passed his/her 14th birthday or be 13 years old and in the 8th grade but not have passed his/her 19th birthday by January 1 of the current 4-H program year.). This leadership retreat is planned and carried out by the State 4-H Ambassadors and Diplomats. The event is a three day, two night event filled with great workshops and neat opportunities. During the weekend youth will be involved in hands-on activities while learning about personal development, team work, leadership conquering fears, motivation, personalities and much more! Further information about the workshops and activities will be posted on the website when available, http://nm4h.nmsu.edu (click on the link titled State Events). The registration fee is $175 per Senior 4-H member and includes a conference t-shirt. Adult volunteer leaders may be needed to serve as chaperones (to fulfill the ratio of youth to adult: 8 to 1) and assist with transportation to and from Senior Leadership Retreat. Adult volunteer leaders wishing to volunteer can contact Marlee, 437-0231. Registration fee and completed forms must be received in the Otero County Extension Office by Friday, December 7, 2018. No late registrations will be accepted. You must be enrolled for the 2018-2019 4-H year. If you have not please make sure to turn in your enrollment forms as soon as possible. February 1st 4-H Enrollment Deadline The enrollment deadline for all 4-H members, re-enrolling and new members, is February 1, 2019. Please use the current 4-H year (2018-2019) enrollment forms available from the Extension Office and do not use any old forms you may have left over from previous years. 4-H member enrollment forms must be received in the Otero County Extension Office on or before 5:00 pm, February 1, 2019 (office hours are 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm) for 4-H members to be eligible to participate in county, district, and/or state level competitive events. (This is not a postmark date.) All 4-H members must re-enroll every year. The Otero County Extension Service will accept enrollment forms after 5:00 pm on February 1, 2019. However, members enrolling after February 1, 2019 are not eligible to participate in county, district, and/or state level competitive events and will not meet the policy outlined in the Otero County 4-H Council Bylaws for 4-H members in good standing. Members enrolling after February 1, 2019 may participate in non-competitive events at the club, county, district, and/or state level at the discretion of the 4-H club. A 4-H member is not enrolled until the completed enrollment form has been received in the Otero County Extension Office. The enrollment form must be on file in the Otero County Extension Office as mandatory proof of enrollment in the 4-H program. 4-H members may submit their completed enrollment forms to their 4-H Club Organizational Leader or the Otero County Extension Office. 4-H Club Organizational Leaders receiving any completed enrollment forms from 4-H members must submit the forms to the Otero County Extension Office on or before 5:00 pm, February 1, 2019 (office hours are 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm) for 4-H members to be eligible to participate in county, district, and/or state level competitive events. 4-H members submitting enrollment forms to their 4-H Club Organizational Leaders may contact the Otero County Extension Office, 437-0231, to confirm that the forms have been received in the Extension Office by the deadline. The 2018-2019 4-H Program Year enrollment deadline of February 1, 2019 is a firm deadline! NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. December 2018 Page 3

Hunter Education Shooting Sports Projects All 4-H members must complete a hunter education class before they are eligible to participate in shooting sports practices and contests. 4-H members participating in practices and contests need to submit a copy of their hunter education card and completed 17-18 4-H release form to the Extension Office if they have not already done so. For additional information regarding hunter education classes or to register for a class go to the NM Game and Fish website: http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/education/hunter_ed/. Archery Practice Schedule Thursday the 13th & 27th in December at the Otero County Fairgrounds! 6-7 pm Beginners Archery Members 7-8pm Advanced Archery Members Shotgun Practice Schedule December 16th December 30th Gun Show Clean Up December 2nd - 1:00 pm at the Roadrunner Trap Club - 9:00 am at the Roadrunner Trap Club - 3:45 pm at the Otero County Fairgrounds. Shooting Sports Meeting Dec. 13th @ 5:30pm Note: Seniors may participate in rifle, pistol, shotgun and archery. Juniors may participate in rifle, shotgun, and archery. Novices may participate in rifle and archery. New Mexico 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification The next training will be held in Tucumcari, NM February 22-24. The cost of the training is $70.00 and registration will be due in the extension office by December 14th. If you are wanting to attend you must first complete your adult leaders background check and enrollment forms prior to the registration deadline. The policy for maintaining certification, according to our policies and procedures are as follows: II. New Mexico 4-H Shooting Sports Minimum Standards 6. To maintain certification as a 4-H shooting sports Level I or Level II instructor, one must be active two out of three consecutive years. If inactive for two consecutive years, re-certification is required. It is suggested that certified Instructors attend a training workshop every 3-5 years. Page 4

Drop on by and enjoy making a craft as well as playing a game! Santa will also be on site and ready to take Pictures! So tell your family and friends to stop by and Say Hello at the Heart of the Desert, Holiday at the Ranch. Otero County 4-H New Officer Training! Otero County 4-H Awards Ceremony Friday, December 14, 2018 -- 6:00 p.m. Exhibit Building, Otero County Fairgrounds Each 4-H family please bring a dessert or snack food to share! We are asking for ALL 4-H Clubs to assist with hosting responsibilities of the Awards Ceremony to assist with cleaning up after the ceremony. What: Help Congratulate our fellow 4-H members who submitted record books for the 2017-2018 year, celebrate our Cloverbuds, Leaders, and the 2018-2019 Otero County Council Officers Instillation. This year s Theme is Christmas Clover! Don t forget to wear an ugly Christmas Sweater to participate in our Ugly Sweater Contest. Page 6

The help of all of our 4-H Clubs is needed to make 4-H Awards Ceremony successful! Please Participate in our Ugly Sweater Contest, and join us for a fun evening! The Ugly Sweater Contest is open to Adults and Youth. There will be a prize awarded for both age divisions.
