The Eagles, 16-7 on the season, debuted at No. 22 in this week s poll. GSU has beaten four ranked opponents so far this year. Samford made a big move up the SoCon standings over the weekend, sweeping Furman to move to 5-4 in league play and vault from ninth in the standings into a tie for fourth. Appalachian State s Tuesday game against UNC Asheville has been postponed by the threat of inclement weather in Boone, N.C. No makeup date has been set. Elon s home game vs. East Carolina on Wednesday has been moved to a 4 p.m. start. SoCon teams are 92-62 against non-league competition this season, good for an impressive.597 winning percentage. The Southern Conference is the seventh-rated conference in Warren Nolan s latest RPI rankings. The league trails only the ACC, SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12 and Sun Belt, in that order. Through the latest NCAA stats release, Samford leads NCAA Div. I with 27 home runs, while Appalachian State leads the nation in homers per game with 1.10. Wofford leads the nation in stolen bases with 77 so far. Georgia Southern s Chase Griffin leads DI with six sacrifice flies. Player/Pitcher of the Week C.K. Irby, Jr., DH/RHP Samford.562, 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 8 runs, 1.062 SLUG 1-0, 1.00 ERA, 16 K, 0 BB, 9.0 IP, CG In four games last week, Irby hit.562 with a pair of home runs, six RBI and eight runs scored. On the mound, the junior righty threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 16 and not walking a batter in a win over Furman on Friday. At the plate last week, Irby had at least one hit in each contest. He started his week with a 1-for-3 showing with a solo home run against Alabama. The Florence, Ala., native then went 8-for-13 (.615) in a three-game sweep of the Paladins in Greenville, S.C., over the weekend. In game one of Friday s doubleheader, Irby was 3-for- 5 with a two-run homer, his second in as many games and fifth of the season, as the Bulldogs picked up the 9-1 win. Irby was also the starting pitcher in that contest, facing the minimum through the first three innings and scattering three hits. A leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth accounted for the only run Irby allowed in the contest. His 16 strikeouts were the most by a SoCon pitcher this season and tied the school record set by Josh Ehmke on May 13, 2006, at Tennessee Tech. In game two of the doubleheader, Irby was 1-for-3 with two walks as the Bulldogs won 9-4. Samford completed the sweep Saturday, with Irby saving perhaps his best day at the plate for last. He was 4-for-5 with a walk, a two-run triple, an RBI single, a stolen base and four runs scored as Samford took the 16-6 win. SoCon Baseball

SoCon team notes SoCon active career leaders* APPALACHIAN STATE After playing its first three SoCon series of the season on the road, Appalachian State plays its next two and five of the final seven conference sets of the season at home. With two stolen bases last week, Hector Crespo moved alone into 10th place in So- Con history with 93 career steals. Jamie Nunn has recorded quality starts (at least six innings, three or fewer runs allowed) in each of his six starts this season. Will Callaway has reached base in an Appalachian State season-high 14 straight games. COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON College of Charleston went 2-2 on the week with a split of the Appalachian State series before Sunday s game was canceled due to rain. The Cougars defeated rival Citadel in a nonconference game on Wednesday but lost to Connecticut on Tuesday. With two close games against the Mountaineers, there have now been 14 CofC games that have been decided by or were one-run games in the 7th inning or later. The Cougars will host nationally ranked South Carolina on Tuesday night before traveling to Samford for a weekend series. CofC s first four conference opponents have been ranked first and second in the 2013 preseason (Elon, WCU) and won the 2012 regular season and tournament (Appalachian State, Samford). THE CITADEL The Citadel dropped midweek games to rivals South Carolina and College of Charleston for just its second losing streak of the season. The Bulldogs ended the brief skid with a 6-4 victory over Charleston Southern on Friday before the Saturday and Sunday games were rained out. Bo Thompson continued his red-hot hitting with his eighth home run of the season against College of Charleston. He is tied for the conference lead in home runs and ranks first in slugging percentage, third in on-base percentage and seventh in batting average. DAVIDSON Davidson started the season 3-0 in games decided by one run but lost all three onerun games this past week. Andrew Barna leads the Wildcats with five home runs in 22 games after hitting none last season. ELON Elon senior Alex Swim currently ranks among the top five active national leaders in both at-bats (805) and hits (247). The Phoenix has now won seven of its last eight games. FURMAN Furman s 7-5 win over Georgia on Tuesdaywas the Paladins third straight triumph and fourth victory in the last five clashes with the Bulldogs. After going 5-2 in its first seven SoCon games, Furman has now dropped five straight league games. After hitting just.130 through the first 12 games, sophomore third baseman Chris Ohmstede has batted.400 (20-for-50, four HR, 10 RBI) over the last 12 games to raise his season average to.271. GEORGIA SOUTHERN The Eagles entered the Baseball America rankings for the first time since 1990. Georgia Southern debuted in this week s poll ranked 22nd. The Eagles are 12-3 in the month of March and hold a.284 batting average and a 4.26 ERA in 15 games this month. UNCG The Spartans rank in the top three in the league in batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, doubles and triples, while senior Christian Wolfe leads the SoCon in batting average (.431). UNCG has recorded double-digit hits in 13 games this season, including seven of the last nine. Sophomore outfielder Eric Kalbfleisch has reached base safely in 11 straight games. He also owns a career-high hitting streak of eight games this year. Sophomore RHP Lee Gilliam continues to shine for the Blue and Gold early this season as he owns a team-best ERA of 1.54, which is second-lowest in the Southern Conference. SAMFORD Samford junior pitcher and designated hitter C.K. Irby had an outstanding week both on the mound and at the plate. Irby pitched a complete game and tied a school record with 16 strikeouts in Friday night s win at Furman. At the plate, he batted.562 in four games last week, with a triple, two home runs and six RBI. Samford earned its first Southern Conference series win with a sweep at Furman over the weekend. The Bulldogs defeated the Paladins by scores of 9-1, 9-4 and 16-6. WESTERN CAROLINA WCU went 1-3 last week, falling midweek at Tennessee before losing two-ofthree to Elon in a battle of the top two teams in the SoCon Coaches preseason poll. The Catamounts halted a six-game home losing skid to Elon with Friday s series-opening victory, 7-5, before falling on Saturday 8-5 and in the series rubber match, 2-1, in a pitchers duel. WCU closer Preston Hatcher picked up his fifth save of the year on Friday, giving him 15 for his four-year career and moving him into a tie for sixth all-time in WCU s record books, matching former right-handed closer Daniel Ottone (15 saves, 2007-10). WOFFORD The Terriers have stolen 78 bases in 99 attempts so far this season through 25 games, which leads the Southern Conference. Last season Wofford stole 86 in the 54 games. Junior Jesse Morris set the Wofford Division I strikeout record with 15 against UNCG on Friday night. His 15 strikeouts were the most for a Terrier pitcher since 1973. Junior closer Eric Eck recorded his sixth save of the season (and third of the week) on Saturday against UNCG. He is tied for third in school history with 13 career saves. Wofford will begin a nine-game road trip on Wednesday night at USC Upstate, the longest road swing of the season for the Terriers.
