The Ottawa Remote Control Club Newsletter Hello everyone, In case anyone hasn't noticed, the snow at last has melted and spring is fully arrived. A new season of flying is well underway. The summer promises to be busy with lots of events and activities. So check the events calendars and come on out for anything that interests you. Also feel free to volunteer your services. The organizers always need people to help with various odd jobs here and there at the events. It can be a fun way to meet and interact with interesting people from all over, and you can link up with some movers and shakers in the hobby. It is good to get involved. As summer approaches we'll be looking as usual for volunteers to help with the mowing of the grass and with other things that need to be done from time to time. Our whole operation runs on volunteers and the more people who are involved, the better things go for all our members. As always, we need to pay attention to safety. So, as the new season gets underway, read over the MAAC safety code on the MAAC website make sure you are following all the proper rules. We are all responsible for safety! Greely Sand and Gravel - our new neighbours Greely Sand and Gravel has rented the space next to the main gate at Drummond Field. It is a family owned business based in - you guessed it - Greely. They wanted a depot close to Kanata, where many of their customers are. We have already met and spoken to some of the owners, and they seem like very good people. We'll invite them to come to some of our fun-fly events and sell them hamburgers. We'll also see if we can get some of them interested enough in airplanes and helis to actually join the club (grin). We've explained to them a bit about our safety rules. But we do have to be especially vigilant now that more members of the public will be coming through the gate. Everybody please keep a watchful eye for people coming onto the field. Especially keep a watch out for young children who are curious about the airplanes while the parents are dealing with Greely. Looking forward to seeing you at the flying field, Mike Toner ORCC president

Last meeting was our annual Concourse D Elegance, which is a chance for everyone to show off their latest creations. Congratulations to all competitors, and thanks for taking the time to bring your aircraft to the show for all to see. !"#!$$ There have been complaints that the main gate at Drummond Field has been locked improperly. That is a bad thing for various reasons. Because this clearly shows a need for some education in the subtle art of gate padlocking, please lend me your attention for this very short remedial lesson. Please direct your attention to Figure I. There you will see the correctly locked main gate. With the gate locked in this manner, both Drummond and Greely can easily open the gate without cutting off the ORCC lock. Please look closely at the figure, and see that the two locks are together, lock-to-lock, as they are supposed to be. Very good. Now, consider the situation in Figure II. In this very sad and unhappy arrangement, any non- ORCC person who must enter the gate, (such as personnel from Drummond or Greely) must take out a big huge nefarious device called a "lock cutter" and (-shudder-) cut off the ORCC lock to enter the gate. This is a bad thing. We, as ORCC members, very much wish to avoid the situation where the above-mentioned "lock cutters" are deployed for the purpose of cutting off the ORCC lock. Let us all promise that we will not let this dreadful event happen. So, to summarize our lesson, we as good ORCC members must lock the gate with the two padlocks together in a lock-to-lock arrangement as in Figure I. We will *not* and I repeat *NOT* lock it as in Figure II, because that is just plain wrong and not good. And, most unfortunately, it might cause certain people to get the wrong idea about the average intelligence level of ORCC members. This concludes the Gate Locking - Remedial Lesson 101 Thank you for your attention. - 4 -
