The P ATRIOT P RESS Patriot Oaks Academy Newsletter January 11, 2019 Principal s Post Dear Patriot Oaks families, Our newsletter is packed with important dates and information today so please be sure to take a minute and look through its pages! We are excited to have Deputy Beasley as the newest member of our Patriot Oaks staff. We appreciate the sheriff s office and school district as they continue to look at ways to increase safety and security for our schools. As a reminder, we conduct monthly fire drills with our students and also have semester drills severe weather and lockdown drills. The purpose of drills is to build muscle memory so students and staff are more at ease, knowing that they know what to do. We will be having our second round of severe weather and lockdown drills later this semester. Thank you for your generosity during the holidays to our staff and for your willingness to donate food items for our Eagle scout project. We are so blessed to have such a giving community! Please know how much we appreciate all that you do to support our school! 8TH GRADE CAREER ACADEMIES NEWS

MEDIA CENTER NEWS ~ BATTLE OF THE BOOK TRYOUTS Don t forget, Battle of the Books tryouts are this month! Tryouts for the 3-5 grade Battle of the Books team will be Tuesday and Thursday, January 15 and 17, at 8am in the media center. This team s sponsor is Ms. Fletcher. 6-8 grade tryouts will be the following week, January 22 and 24, at 8am in the media center. The middle school team s sponsor is Mrs. Hudson. Students are expected to attend both days of tryouts. They must also have already read at least six of the Sunshine State books to try out for the team. After teams have been determined, practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8am. Please see our POA media center webpage for more details about the program. Questions? SPORTS TEAMS TRYOUTS 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students interested in trying out for SJMSAA Sports: The Patriot Oaks Tennis Team Tryout will be Friday, February 1, 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Durbin Crossing South tennis courts (145 S Durbin Pkwy) Students interested in participating in the tryouts should preregister (starting January 14) on the SJMSAA Tennis website at 222.sjmsaa.com. A reminder that baseball registration is open and tryouts are January 14, 15 and 16 at 3:30 at Mills Field. You must be preregistered before the 14th. Golf registration will open on January 28th. 8TH GRADE DANCE/TSHIRT DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 2/8 The deadline has been extended for the donation forms for the 8th grade dance and class T-shirt. February 8th is the last chance to order your child their class shirt. No shirt orders will be placed after this date.no exceptions. The class picture will be taken in March and we would love to have all of your 8th graders in their shirts for this picture. Each student who donated will get a copy of this picture as well. ATTENTION 6TH GRADE STUDENTS/PARENTS When you have your child s 11 year old well visit/physical, please obtain a Florida Form 680 Certification of Immunization from your doctor and turn it in to our front office. All students attending a Florida school must have proof of receiving their Tdap booster shot prior to starting 7th grade. This will make the summer transition from 6th to 7th grade much smoother. DISTRICT NEWS MOVING OR WITHDRAWING? If you are moving or changing your address, you must notify the school. If you are moving out of the SJCSD zone, you must stop by Patriot Oaks and fill out official SJCSD withdrawal forms. Even if you are moving within the Patriot Oaks school zone, you must fill out new registration forms and provide three (3) proofs of residence for your new address. Registration forms can be found on our website. If you are moving to another SJCSD school zone, you must register with them.

SUMMER MARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM Applications for the summer Marine Science Program will be passed out by science teachers at all schools during the week of February 11th. Applications will be due back to science teachers by March 5th. Applications can also be downloaded at any time from the website prior to April 12th at http://www-grms.stjohns.k12.fl.us/ and click on the Marine Science link. The link also will have a complete day by day curriculum for each grade level, parent information, and a video from last year s program. This summer program is available to all students currently in grades five through seven and has been sponsored by the school district since 1982. Three eight day sessions are held at Gamble Rogers Middle School with bus transportation provided. The dates for the three sessions this summer will be May 29st through June 7th, June 10th through June 20th, and June 24th through July 3rd. Small classes of 12-14 students are separated by grade level. All instructors in the program are St. Johns County School District teachers. The Marine Science Program is a carefully designed experience for responsible students who are interested in learning about our local marine environments. Learning is hands on in the field with students kayaking, canoeing, boating, hiking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP, (stand up paddleboarding), etc. Specific grade level activities and curriculum are attached to the applications and are also available from the website. GIRLS ON THE RUN At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. This after school program is available to girls grades 3rd-5th. Registration will be open January 14th-21st. The registration will be based on a lottery system where participants will be randomly selected. The website is https://www.gotrnefl.org/
