YQCA for Livestock Exhibitors Mahaska County is no longer offering FSQA (Food Safety & Quality Assurance). Those who took the FSQA test and are certified through 2018 will not be required to complete YQCA. YQCA is required for Mahaska County 4-H & FFA members who plan to exhibit Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep, Beef, Dairy, Swine, & Meat Goat (excludes bucket/ bottle) at the county/state fair. YQCA certification is designed to be useful and help prepare you for your show but also prepare you as a young producer in the animal agriculture industry. That s why the program includes information on multiple species even though you may only be raising one or two we hope you see that by raising animals you are part of a larger community that relies on the good faith of everyone doing their part. YQCA Training is required each year for those who will exhibit at the county and/or state fair and costs $12.00 per year. If you would like to receive financial assistance, please contact the Extension office. We have limited funds available. If applying for financial assistance, a coupon code will be provided to you by the Extension office. You will use your 4hOnline credentials to log in to YQCA. Please have those credentials, along with a credit card, available when you prepare to complete the YQCA training online: https://yqca.learngrow.io/account/login. Training can be completed at the Extension office by appointment only. Call 641-673-5841 or email vermeera@iastate.edu to schedule an appointment. We are not offering a FSQA test-out option this year. YQCA is currently working on a test-out option for members. All Mahaska County 4-H & FFA members must complete the training in 2018, unless currently certified for the FSQA test (2018 only). YQCA MUST BE COMPLETED BY JULY 1, 2018. 4 9

Livestock Identification You may enter your livestock and small animal information into the Animals tab in 4hOnline. Animals that have or will attend a weigh-in will be entered into 4hOnline by our staff, so you will not need to enter that information on your own. Animals that will need to attend a weigh-in include, Market Beef, County Fair Swine, Market Lambs, Meat Goats, Bottle Lambs, and Bottle Goats. All other animals, including Breeding Heifers, must be entered in 4hOnline on your own. Myotonic (Fainting) Goats must be registered as Meat Goats (not weighed in) and in the scrapie tag line, please enter MYOTONIC. A Help Sheet for the animal identification process can be found at the Extension office and at https://www.extension.iastate. edu/mahaska/news/iowa-4honline-help-sheets. All livestock must be entered into 4hOnline by 11:59 p.m. on May 15, 2018, but please do not wait until the last minute. If you have any questions about this process that are not answered by the Help Sheets, please contact the Extension office at 673-5841. 4-H Livestock Rules (4H 202) If you plan to exhibit livestock at the county or state fair in 2018, please read the 4H 202 document very thoroughly. The 4H 202 can be found at https://store.extension.iastate.edu/ Product/194. It includes important information for each species, including identification requirements. It is the responsibility of the 4-H family to read these requirements and abide by the rules set by the county and state 4-H program. Weigh-in Dates Swine Weigh-in Saturday, March 24 8:00-10:00 AM Fairgrounds Maintenance Shop Sheep, Meat Goat, Bottle Lamb, & Bottle Goat Weigh-in Saturday, May 5 8:00-10:00 AM Fairgrounds Scale in Bucket/Bottle Calf Barn Members are not required to attend weigh-ins, but it is highly encouraged. Please verify information on ID forms is correct before leaving the weigh-in site. Verification of information entered by 4-H Staff in 4hOnline is required by May 15. 8 Swine Weigh-in & Rule Updates Swine Weigh-in will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 8:00-10:00 AM in the Maintenance Shop at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds. 4-H & FFA youth planning to exhibit at the Southern Iowa Fair are permitted to weigh-in six pigs in spring with a maximum of three eligible to show at the county fair, see exception below. An additional six may be weighed in for the new Pen of 3 class. NEW: Pen of 3 Swine must be identified with special feeder pen tags at the spring weigh-in. Each exhibitor can weigh-in 6 pigs for this class. Exhibitors must choose 3 to bring to the fair. Pen of 3 pigs will not have ultrasound done at fair weighin. Pen of 3 will be stalled in one stall, not separately. Pigs will be judged during the show by the judge on: uniformity, rate of gain, & overall quality. Class Options include Commercial Gilt, Purebred Gilt (must have 5 to establish class & papers are due at fair), Market Swine, Derby Swine, and Pen of 3 Swine. The requirement of having at least one derby pig applies to all individual entries. If just exhibiting a Pen of 3 Swine, the derby requirement does not apply. We will NOT have a Purebred Barrow Class or Carcass Swine Class this year. These are classes that have been suggested and are being taken into consideration for future years, but WILL NOT be classes this year. We are sorry for any confusion about these rumors. Bucket/Bottle Animal Birthdates Bucket/Bottle Calves must be born between: February 1 and April 30, 2018 Bottle Lambs & Goats must be born between: January 1 and April 30, 2018 Animals must be in exhibitor s possession within 2 weeks of the animal s birth. Bucket/Bottle Calves do not require a beginning weigh-in. Bottle Lambs and Bottle Goats must attend the May 5 weigh-in. Refer to the February newsletter for more details. 5
