Carolina Shag Club Newsletter For the Love of Shag May 2016 A Proud Member of: From Your Club President, Dan Ellington Hi Everyone; May 14 th is the date for our major fund raising event for our charities. Our golf tournament will be held at Willow Creek Country Club in Greer. We raise the largest share of donations to Camp Courage and The Ellen Taylor Foundation from the proceeds of this event. All monies raised above expenses are donated to our charities. Any of you who play golf or have friends and family members that play, please encourage them to participate this year. If you play but do not have a foursome, please send an email to thecarolinashagclub@gmail.com to reserve a spot. I will combine individual players into teams. Also, many opportunities are available for donations, sponsors and volunteers including individual sponsorships at the $25 level. Please see me with any questions you may have. The flyer for our tournament is attached to this newsletter and all necessary forms to play or sponsor are available on our website. July 8, 2009 was opening night at The Phoenix for CSC. Many of us remember the temporary dance floor and the slightly confused atmosphere that night. Please remember to thank the Phoenix staff and, especially, Greta Pye for their successful efforts in transforming our home into what it is today. When comparing our home to other shag clubs, I think we have reason to count our blessings. I understand from many of you that SOS was a great success last month. A few of the stories were a little sketchy but what happens at OD should always stay at OD, right? I m glad we have everyone back home safe and sound. Junior Shaggers Dance at Airport s RunWay Café Hangar Steve and Jill Woodard, Beach Bob Ross and Kathy Cole highlight event with shag lessons and beach music Approximately 20 or more Junior Shaggers, along with parents and relatives, came to Greenville from all across the region on a pleasant Saturday afternoon on April 9 th to work on their shag steps. They were entertained by local celebrity DJ s Bob (Beach Bob) Ross and Kathy Cole as they played their selection of beach music favorites. But first, beginning at 4:00 p.m., introductory shag lessons were given by Steve and Jill Woodard. Beach Bob assisted with the music selection as students practiced their beginner steps. Kathy Cole helped out by dancing with various students as they practiced their lessons. The session lasted for about one hour. After the Junior Shaggers practiced, everyone was invited into the RunWay Café s dining area to enjoy food and drinks, listen to Beach Bob and Kathy s music, socialize and watch any airplane activities on the runway of the Greenville Downtown Airport. Afterwards, some of the parents and Juniors continued their evening at The Phoenix Inn. The Phoenix is home to the Carolina Shag Club. Beach Bob and Kathy Cole take a moment and pose for the camera prior to kicking off the Junior Shaggers event at the RunWay Café Hanger at the Greenville Downtown Airport. Bob and Kathy appear regularly at various locations in the upstate, playing a wide selection of Carolina Shag and Beach Music songs. You can find their schedule of appearances on Bob s FaceBook page, Beach Bob Oldies Entertainment. They can also be contacted through Bob s FaceBook page. Photo by Skip Watkins Beach Bob and Kathy start the Junior Shagger dance lessons by introducing Steve and Jill Woodard to the class. Bob provided music on call for practice; Kathy assisted as a dance partner to some of the junior boys. Photo by Skip Watkins 7

Junior Shagger Lessons Steve and Jill Woodard begin the Junior Shagger s class with a demonstration of their dance routine. They often use their steps they perform during competition. John Soup Campbell wins Richard Nixon DJ Award for 2016 On Friday night, March 4 th of the 25 th Annual D.J. Throwdown, the DJ Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held at Fat Harold s Beach Club in Ocean Drive. This year s Richard Nixon award winner is John Soup Campbell. Soup is one of Carolina Shag Club s regularly scheduled DJs featured each Wednesday night at The Phoenix. He lives in Gaffney, S.C. The Richard Nixon Memorial Service Award for Association members was established in May of 2004 and is presented annually to the deejay or deejays that have performed outstanding service other than deejay service for any group or entity encompassing the shag dance community or the shag and beach music community at large. Soup Campbell proudly shows off his Richard Nixon Award plaque for 2016. The award is given annually to ABSCDJs D.J.s for their service to the shag community. Photo courtesy of April ABSCDJ Newsletter The award is intended to honor the memory of one of the first shag deejays who resided at North Myrtle Beach for many years and who was tireless in his efforts and service to various charities and organizations in the Carolinas. To be considered for the award, a D.J. has to be a current member of the Association of Beach & Shag Club D.J.s must conduct their affairs in accordance to the Association bylaws and must be nominated by a current Association member. A winner or winners are chosen by the Association board of directors at the Mid-Winter meeting. Winners receive an appropriate plaque and have their name added to a plaque that s maintained at Duck s Beach Club. John said he had no idea that he was this year s winner. He said, They announced my name and everybody turned and looked in my direction. So I turned and looked behind me to see who won turned out that it was me. I was really surprised. 9

Club Members are Winners of Recent Raffles John Soup Campbell (right) shared a portion of the DJ Throwdown Reverse Raffle at Duck s Beach Club back on March 5 th. A group of eight final ticket-holders pooled their numbers and pledged to share the pot without regard to the final winner. The eight winners split $10,000. Buck Crumpton (3 rd from left) held two tickets and doubled his winning amount. Shag Club Members Dance with Seniors at Haywood Estates Approximately 20 of Carolina Shag Club s members visited the senior citizen residents at Haywood Estates on Friday, April 29 th. Members were invited to come out, dance with the residents and generally socialize and entertain with their dance steps. Members also solicited dances from various residents as the evening progressed. In prior years Haywood Estates has invited CSC members to come out for their Beach Parties. As a reward for visiting and entertaining the residents, Haywood Estates typically makes a donation to one of the charities that CSC supports.
