By Judy Holman May 2014 My Road Runner came out of the garage for the Cars and Coffee cruise in at West Town Mall this past Sunday. What a terrific turn out. Harper Infinite sponsored this event and invited all cars no matter the make, model, or year. I arrived around 8:15am that morning and met up with club member Jim Hill. He brought out his 65 Coronet. By this time there had to be over 150 cars already there. After getting that morning cup of coffee I settled into my lawn chair to enjoy the morning. My Road Runner got a lot of attention - mostly to hear the horn go Beep Beep! I didn t mind at all. The older generation remembered and the younger ones got a kick out of it. There was one little boy, about 4 years old, that bugged his father to take his picture with my car. His dad tried to talk him out of it saying - why not this Mustang or the Corvette. The little boy was very persistent and got his way. Smiling from ear to ear as his dad took his picture standing next to the car he liked - a MOPAR! I visited with several Mopar friends I haven t seen in awhile. Catching up on family and the cars in their garages. On a sad note - two young men lost their lives and a young lady is still at UT hospital, after leaving the cruise in. One was helping the other after one car broke down on I-40. Another vehicle lost control and struck them. Our thoughts and prayers are with these families. The next cruise in, another Coffee and Cars, will be on Saturday, May 10, at the Atomic Speed Shop in Oak Ridge. The hours will be from 8am 11am. Depending on the weather, Mike and I will be attending the CTE car show at the Toyota Knoxville/Lexus of Knoxville dealership at 10416 Park Side Drive. Several members talked about attending the Mopar Mania car show in White Pine on May 31. Let s talk about a caravan or meeting up with each other for this show. Be sure to read John s car show article and become involved in the day of show jobs. Members are being asked to get items that can be used for the Dollar Bill races and door prizes for both car show entrants and the kids. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our wonderful Mopar Moms a Happy Mother s Day. Hope to see you all at an ETM meeting or activity.

Page 2 Fun In The Sun by John Foster, Car Show Director It s hard to believe that the 26 th Annual Fun In The Sun Car Show is only 12 weeks away. It has been another busy month of preparation and we need everyone s help to continue to spread the word and hand out car show flyers. More pre-show registration forms have been received and the field of quality cars is looking good. During our board meeting on April 24 th, we discussed sponsorships, goody bag items and door prizes for both adults and kids. Although we have made good progress in each area, we still have room and need several more sponsors for both the T-Shirts and Trophies, as well as more goody bag items and door prizes for all of the different contests and games. Please check around with your local Mopar auto dealers and high performance auto parts stores to see if they can help with inexpensive promotional items. Also, remember to get a business card for any items you receive so we can thank them as a sponsor during the show. If anyone needs a sponsor invoice for T-Shirts or Trophies, please contact me or Judy. As a reminder, all sponsorship invoices and funds are due no later than June 1 st. We will be meeting with the T-Shirt supplier this week to discuss the 1 st draft of the design concept, and hope to have a rough layout to show at our next meeting on Saturday, May 3 rd to get everyone s input, so please plan on attending Next, we reviewed the job sheet and filled in a few more positions, but we still need several more people to step forward and volunteer for at least a 4 hour morning or afternoon shift. If you haven t let us know yet that you can volunteer to help, please contact me about one of the remaining open positions that needs to be filled to balance the workload. Lastly, I just want to thank everyone that has been so helpful to keep things moving along, the sponsors that have come forward so far, and the participants that have gotten their registration forms sent in early. It s going be a great show!!! Mopar Muscle is a monthly newsletter published for and about the East Tennessee Mopars Car Club, P.O. Box 51401, Knoxville, TN. 37950. Page 7 ADVENTURES IN M-BODYLAND ( or, It won t do WHAT!?!) BY: Chris Yaroch Soooo last installment, I bored you to tears with my anecdote about playing bumper cars out in the frontier town of Fort Smith. Where was I? Oh, yeah! So, we re post Labor Day and my newly rebuilt and freshly repainted LA 318 is once again nestled between the fenders of my 1987 Dodge Diplomat, aka The Sabotage. So named by my co-workers after the 1986 Ford Crown Vic that appears in the Beastie Boys video Sabotage. I tried explaining to them that they re two separate cars. One is a Ford, mine is a Dodge. Yeah, um never mind. The motor looked great painted in the 1969 Chrysler turquois blue and sounded pretty bad-to-the-bone running on open headers. My mechanic Rex dutifully hooked everything up and plumbed the exhaust with my new tti Headers. The fit was perfect! I thought ( thought being the key word, here) I was seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Yeah, the whole project was, in my mind, several months behind. But, hey the hardest part was behind me. famous last words- Rex took the Dippy for its inaugural test run down Blair Road. The sound of that motor rumbling was electrifying. Hearing the loud staccato slap of the exhaust valves gave us goose bumps. This car sounded just like a big block from 1969! I knew this was gonna be a real head-turner! Rex rumbled off and you could hear it roaring down in the Dyllis Valley. I just knew Rex would have an exciting ride. Little did I know how exciting it would be! When Rex drove back in from the 10 minute test drive, he was white as a ghost! The slightly panicked look on his face wasn t helping much, either. When he climbed out of the car, he asked me, What kind of cam did you put in there!?! I muttered, Comp Cams Thumpr Cam and mumbled some indecipherables followed with a weak, supposed to be streetable why? Rex looked at me blankly and informed me I had an extremely radical cam and had NO VACUUM for the power-assist brakes. Ergo I HAD NO BRAKES!!! Rex explained that I needed to find a vacuum pump to run the brakes if I was to continue using this cam. oh, great another damned kink!- Off I went to a speed shop in Powell, TN. I lucked out and got the very last vacuum on the shelf. When I took Rex the pump, I brought along the specs on the Thumpr Cam. Rex just looked at it wide-eyed and wondered aloud as to why I would want such a radical cam. Well, DUUUUUH! Because I DIDN T KNOW!!! I pointed out to Rex the ad for the Thumpr Cam and kept pointing to the part where it stated that it was a fully streetable cam. Within a week, the pump was mounted and my M-body had brakes that worked. Maybe, just maybe it s finally coming together. Next month, we ll learn how they get the candy coating on M&Ms without messing it up. Lesson Learned: Don t always believe what you read!

Page 8 2014 THUNDER ROAD FESTIVAL ROCKWOOD By: Chris Yaroch East Tennessee Mopars kicked off Spring by attending the annual Thunder Road Festival & Car Show in downtown Rockwood. The event took place April 5 th and this year marked the 60 th anniversary of the famous movie Thunder Road starring Robert Mitchum. It was a clear, cool day for the event. Several club members were in attendance with their cars. Several to mention were Bobby G and his lovely wife, Janet, with their 1969 Dodge Charger R/T. Also in attendance were Mike & Judy Holman with their 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Chris & Katie Yaroch with their 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Core. Jim Hill along with Hugh & Sharon Clark came sans Mopars. The day started off clear and sunny, albeit a bit cool. There were an estimated 120 cars in attendance of the car show and many door prizes were awarded. Chris Yaroch won such a door prize. It was a UT canister and gift set. Chris had finally gotten some balls golf balls, that is! It was a gift pack of three golf balls, and assorted tees. All items had the UT power T emblazoned on it. Chris spent the better part of an hour trying to find Judy Holman s seat on the Neyland Stadium canister. Members had a fun time perusing the antique shops and especially enjoyed touring the Rockwood Event Center. The Event Center was the original Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth dealership in downtown Rockwood for many years. The building was replete with historic automobile memorabilia. ETM members had a really good (and SUPER filling) lunch at Junior s Restaurant on Rockwood Street. The food was delicious, portions extremely generous and price cheap. Many of our club members actually left with to-go containers for evening dinner! The Thunder Road Festival is a great show and appears to be a regular for East Tennessee Mopars for years to come!
