In the June edition, I forgot to mention Lindsay Kerr has also stepped down from both the Committee of Management and Saturday Selections after several years of helping out. Anyway, this means we can now give a very special thank you to Lindsay for the many, many hours of dedication he has given the Club over a long period. Last year s achievement of 3 sides in Saturday finals is in no small part due to Lindsay s commitment to doing the best for Selections (whether we agreed or not!). We look forward to Linds continuing to contribute in an unofficial capacity you can t keep a good man down!
Working Bee Sunday 11 th September Alan Walker is arranging a working bee on Sunday 11 th September to make sure our Club facilities are just right for the start of the new pennant season. Let Alan know if you have any specific skills that you think will help, otherwise, just rock up around 9:00am and there ll be some simple but important chores for you. If you don t otherwise get a chance to contribute to the Club, this is your chance! We ll share in a BBQ and a couple of drinks when the work is done! Guide Dog Training from Ros Izod I am raising a Guide Dog Pup called Wrenna. As part of her training she needs to learn how to behave appropriately in all situations. To assist her, I will be bringing her to the Bowls Club occasionally. It is important that she learns to behave in a calm manner during these visits. Firstly, she is not a pet (as adorable as she is) and that while she is on her lead or wearing her yellow coat, she is working. I am asking everyone at the Club to help me. Please do not feed her at any time. While she has her yellow coat or lead on, do not pat her as she is working and is not allowed to get excited during these times. If someone would like to pat her, please ask me first. Also Wrenna is NOT allowed to chase a tennis ball that s for Jasper! When she is off her lead she is a playful pup who enjoys running and getting into mischief. Wrenna and I look forward to catching up with you all during the coming season. Rosalind Izod The cottage is available for rent If you, a friend or a family member are interested, full details are ONLY provided by our agent Viv Hughes at Century 21 on Centre. Please call Viv on 9559 0888.
Bowling Matters! Opening of the Greens The Opening of the Greens ceremony will be held on Saturday 3 rd September at 1:00pm. This is a formal ceremony for the Club so bowlers, please wear your NEW club uniform. There will be a 2-bowl triples event following the official opening and of course, the bar will be open. Saturday Pennant Selection Guidelines 1. The Club s aim is to have all teams finish in the finals and win their Section. 2. Selectors will attempt to give all players individual feedback before the season commences. The objective is to understand your objectives and give you the thoughts of the selectors before the season begins. 3. Training with your teammates is important. This includes but is not limited to doing the drills prepared for you. Players in the top 2 sides are expected to train at least once per week in addition to playing in games. 4. Club Championship form will be considered in selecting sides as the season progresses. 5. No Club Championship games are to be played from 4.30-6.30pm on Thursdays. This time is reserved for Pennant practice. 6. Compatibility and player enjoyment within teams is an important consideration in selection. 7. Missing a game or games is no problem. Doing it after the sides have been selected is a problem if you knew there was an issue in advance. There is an unavailability list on the wall please use it. 8. If you do miss a game, it will mean that someone else will get an opportunity in your position. There is no guarantee that you will get your position back immediately if someone else grasps their opportunity.
9. Our aim is to be as transparent as possible throughout the season. Selectors will try to speak to players about selection changes but it is unrealistic to communicate individually with all players each week. If you have an issue with selection, please communicate it to a Selector. 10. Sides to play in finals will be selected from the pool of available players with the objective of giving Bentleigh the best chance of success in those games. 11. Selectors will not be involved in their own personal selection each week. 12. Sides will be selected from 5pm on a Tuesday night and posted on the Selection Board and on the website as soon as possible after that. The Saturday Selection Committee is comprised of Garry Waldron - Chair, Alan Walker, Laurie Gallina, Barb Cruikshank and Frank Pocknee. Pete says once a day for these exercises is sufficient to assure success.
