Sub-Branch Inc. & Caulfield R.S.S.& A. Club Message from the President Welcome to our 1st FURFS for 2018. As you will notice around the club, there is a lot of activity going on, the most notable is the departure of the Flying Saucer Club. We have reinstated our dining room and added a children s activity area. We are also in the process of updating all of our external signage. We are still assessing the impact of having no weekend entertainment and working on new menus with a strong emphasis on family dining. It is great to be able to report that our 2018 membership renewals have gotten off to an impressive start. Our membership team has been working very hard to follow up lapsed memberships. We have found with the departure of FSC there has been an increase in old Service memberships. Our current Club membership is in excess of 1100 members. (If you are unsure of the status of your membership, feel free to give us a call - it only takes a moment to check.) Pick-a-Box has returned to the venue and is showing good signs of increased activity. Friday night meat tray raffles have started up this month and have been received enthusiastically with ticket sales growing each week. Our Social Club are planning a once a month Mega Raffle, with all profits to be split between Welfare and Social Club. This will be starting up on the last Friday of February. You will note in this edition of FURFS there is information with regards to the upcoming Committee elections. I encourage those of you seeking re-election and those seeking to be elected for the first time, to consider the effort and time that goes into being on the Committee. As ANZAC day approaches it is timely to remind you all that our Club is involved in many community activities as well as our own ANZAC badge sales. We need volunteers for hospital visits, nursing home services, badge selling and sausage sizzle fundraisers. There will be a lot happening across this 100th anniversary year of the end of World War 1, leading into the 100th anniversary of the Caulfield RSL in 2019. We look forward to sharing these events with you. COLIN BRADLEY PRESIDENT
Page 2 Caulfield RSL Supports Young Vets The Caulfield RSL Committee President Colin Bradley Senior Vice President Bob Larkin Vice President Russell Phillips Treasurer Caulfield RSL has recently been involved in several programs that support our young Veterans. Through our association with the veterans Partisian motorcycle group, we were made aware of the Suicide Ride that took place from Seymour to The Shrine. This ride was held to recognize the 84 veterans who had taken their own lives last year. Following the ride, participants and their families came back to the Club for refreshments. Along with the Young Vets, Waverly RSL, and Nexus, a Summer Family & Friends Park Evenings has been held over the last 2 weeks, which is an informal BBQ in local Caulfield Park for Vets and their families to get together and connect with others. We are also the first RSL to stock Wild Timor coffee - a company run by young Vets that helps support the local people of East Timor. They recently gave us a shout out on their Instagram page. We are also working to arrange further events for Vets in the near future watch this space. And, remember the Christmas parcels we sent to serving troops? see page 6. Volume 18, Issue 1 Page 3 Australia Day We had a great day at the Club on Australia Day with a perfect summer day to compliment the great BBQ cooked by Dave and Cosmo. It was great to see lots of new faces and plenty of kids (and adults) who were mesmerized by Danny the Magician. Thanks to Brandi for the face painting! Members Draw At the time of printing the member s draw was up to $7,000. We would encourage those members who come in just before the draw and leave straight afterwards to consider coming in earlier to buy raffle tickets or staying to purchase a drink or meal to support the Club. (Yes, we do see you!)

Volume 18, Issue 1 Page 7 Christmas parcels Remember the Care Parcels we sent to the serving troops at Christmas? Last week we received these two letters. Though blurry, the first letter reads: Thank you for the awesome care package that you sent. There were so many thoughtful items in there (and yummy!) Of all the hundreds that were sent to us from Australia, our unit, Expeditionary Airbase Operations Unit (EAOU) rotation 2 was lucky enough to get yours! We cannot believe how many people are thinking about us over here and are so happy to receive these. We arrived into the Middle East on 11 October 2017 and we go back home to Australia on 03 May 2018. Thank you for your support. The second, addressed to Dear Colin, Committee, Staff and Members of Caulfield RSL is simply signed Rachel. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the collection tins and to Geoff Szwarcbard at Guardian Pharmacy and Ian Hattam from Hattams for the items you provided.
