1 23 September 2015 Rowing Elite Development School Canberra Girls Grammar is a Rowing Elite Development School. CGGS is in a partnership with the ACTAS Rowing Program. ACTAS Rowing is assisting CGGS Rowing in several areas. Next Regatta Loreto Schools 6 8 Nov SIRC (not Year 8 squad) Next Function Welcome BBQ after training on Saturday 24 October. Watch this space for more detail. Next Committee Meeting Tuesday 13 October pm at the Shed Head of Rowing Message Welcome to the 2015/16 Rowing Season! Term 3 saw over 50 girls across 4 year groups participate in a Learn-to-Row program. The program was put in place for the assessment and selection of novices for the various groups. We now have a great bunch of girls who have started training for the coming season. We have 110 girls across the 5 year groups who form the shed this season. Along with 18 coaches, CGGS Rowing will be out there in force once again. Yes, training has commenced. There are a few new ideas & activities planned for this season. These include; October mini camps, an extra training session for everyone, introduction of sweep rowing to the Year 10 squad, 7 crews in Year 8, mid-term mini-camp and more. There are a couple of changes to the regatta weekends that have been made since any earlier list of dates you may have seen. Fete weekend: See note on next page Loreto Schools weekend: Year 8 and any other crew not ready for racing will not race here. They will train on the Saturday here locally. NSW Independent Regatta weekend: Year 8 & 9 crews will race here. Year 10 & Seniors will have a multiple training sessions in Canberra. I have included a list of dates for the season and a planned training day matrix. More detail about the extra sessions will be given to the girls soon. Tech Talk is a section in most Shed Shouts which is designed to help educate parents. This week: Types of Boat, Parts of a Stroke. Next edition: Training and Regattas. Dafydd Gwynn-Jones Head of Rowing Club President Message Welcome to the 2015/16 Rowing Season. The purpose of the Canberra Girls Grammar Rowing Club is to promote the enjoyment and success of girls who elect to undertake rowing as a sport and, through that, to help the school prepare these young women for further studies, for leadership and for life. The Club seeks to meet this objective through fundraising and other activities that support the Head of Rowing and the CGGS rowing program. We held our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 9 September. It was great to see so many parents attend and especially parents of Yr 7 girls who have now joined the Shed this season. Like any school sporting endeavour the rowing program cannot happen Page 1 of 5
2 October Mini-Camps As this is a new activity, we will understand if some girls are unable to participate. But for all those available, these days will be great preparation for Term 4. Senior Mini Camp will be held from Tuesday 6 Friday 9 October. Sessions will be: 7:00 9:00am 10:00 11:30am 4:00 6:00pm Junior & Intermediate Mini Camp will be held over Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 October. Exact timings for these days will be forwarded once confirmed. School Fete Clash As you will have seen, there is a clash with the School Fete and the first local regatta. To enable all girls to row and families to attend the Fete, the following arrangements have been made: CGGS will not compete in the CLRC Regatta Senior & Year 10 squads will train on Saturday morning from 6:00 to 9:30am Year 8 & 9 Squads will train on Sunday morning from 7:00 10:30am without the wonderful support of our parent group. We encourage you to get involved! There are many ways that parents can help out from turning sausages at a Shed barbecue to helping provide food for over 100 ravenous rowers at a Sydney Regatta there will always be a way for you to contribute no matter how much time you can offer. We have a couple of Committee positions still looking for enthusiastic occupants to make our Club work effectively: Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer are on offer. We also have a number of other key roles that help to make things run smoothly catering and equipment are also looking for helpers. None of these roles are onerous and they come with handover notes from the previous occupants that pass on their tips and make it easier for you to pick up the threads. If you think that you might be able to help out on the Committee or in any of these roles please give me a call on Cheers Michele Rainger, President Seeking Coordinator for Satay Stall For many years now, the CGGS Rowing Club has staffed the Satay Stall at the School Fete. We are looking for someone who would be willing to coordinate the stall for this year s fete. The job is not difficult as parents will be able to volunteer through an on-line facility which is currently being sorted out by the P&F. The P&F Fete Committee do all the other organizing; parents just turn, cook & serve. Information about volunteering will be forwarded in the near future. Thank you. Basic Training Day Matrix Below is an outline of a standard training week. There may be some minor changes week by week and Regatta days will be different. More detail about the extra sessions will be provided to the girls basically erg sessions. If we don t change our training, we will not change our results. Guide to CGGS Boats The majority of rowing done at CGGS is sculling. This is done mainly in coxed quads. As a school club, we are very lucky to own every class of racing boat - including a coxless quad/four. Rowing can be split into 2 types: Sweep rowing & Sculling. Sweep rowing, or just rowing is done with 1 oar which is approximately 370cm long. Sculling is done with 2 sculls, each about 288cm long. Both types are made of carbon fibre and may have timber or carbon handles. Our boats at CGGS are made mainly with carbon fibre and honeycomb in a sandwich construction. Once they are laid up, they are baked in an oven. Some of our more hardy boats have Kevlar in them to assist with lateral strength. Each boat has a sliding seat arrangement with a foot stretcher where the feet are secured into the boat. Rowers sit facing backwards to go forwards! Single Scull: is the smallest of all boats used in rowing. It is used by one athlete, with a pair of sculling blades (oars) (one in each hand). Double Scull: two rowers, each using a pair of sculling blades. Page 3 of 5
4 Coxless Pair: rowed by a pair of rowers each with a single sweep oar. The athlete at the stern of the boat steers via a cable connecting the rudder to her footstretcher. Coxed Four: four athletes rowing, each with a single sweep oar. A coxswain is on board to steer the boat. Coxed Quad Scull: four athletes on board, each with a pair of sculling blades. A coxswain is on board to steer the boat. Coxed Eight: is the largest of all boats used in racing. There are eight rowers on board, each with a single sweep oar. A coxswain is also on hand to steer. These boats are up to 18m long. The Rowing Stroke The stroke is made up of 4 parts... The Catch: in which oars are placed in the water... The pull through, or Drive: in which the legs are extended and the body opens up to make maximum use of the slide, levering the boat forwards... The Finish: in which oars come out of the water... The Recovery: in which the rower's body moves towards the stern in preparation for the next stroke.
