Waller weekly news 17 APRIL, 2015 Kermadec puts a healthy gap between himself and his Doncaster rivals. Mates against mates - Grand Marshal wears down the gallant Who Shot Thebarman for his maiden Group 1 success in Saturday s Sydney Cup. Rounding off The Championships in fine style, the stable celebrated a nail-biting quinella in the Group 1 Sydney Cup on Saturday with Who Shot Thebarman looking to have the coveted Cup covered before Grand Marshal rocketed home to nab him on the line. A Group 2 win for the talented Delectation also on the Randwick card made for the best result possible for owner Mr CC Lai who was fortuitously in town to enjoy the day. Double Happy made sure he capped off a dream week for Mr Lai red and yellow colours recording his maiden success at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Silverball, Cauthen s Power, Honcho, Rye and Counterattack all rounded off what was a great week for the stable having cracked the 100-Sydney metro win mark for the season. With 11 Group 1 wins in the bag to date and a fresh wave of talent coming to hand for the upcoming Queensland Winter Carnival, our best season to date is far from over and we look forward to sharing more success with you in the coming months. The Sydney Carnival isn t quite over yet and we look forward to another big day at Randwick tomorrow with a smaller, yet select team headed by Weary in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes. Chris and Liam have plenty of information and insights into all things racing in this week s preview show - head to the website: www.cwallerracing.com to view it. INSIDE THIS ISSUE We wish you all the very best of luck over the next week! CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK grand marshal 5yo G Dansili - Margarula by Doyoun Imported stayer Grand Marshal gained a thrilling success in last Saturday s time honoured Group 1 Sydney Cup. The son of Dansili carried the colours of Mr CC Lai and this was a well deserved success for an owner who has invested heavily in Australian racing. Jimmy Cassidy produced a masterclass to come with an unassailable late charge and claim gallant stablemate Who Shot Thebarman close to the line. Cassidy had his mount out the back early on as the race unfolded and the duo were still only in eighth position with 400m to run. Just as Blake Shinn and Who Shot Thebarman looked to have claimed victory, Cassidy conjured up a withering run from the winner to claim the first prize of over $1 million. Grand Marshal raced as Magog in England and he was identified as a promising private purchase by bloodstock agent extraordinnaires Mick Flanagan and Guy Mulcaster. DELECTATION 3yo G Shamardal - Grace and Power by More Than Ready The highly talented Delectation got back to his winning ways when taking out the Group 2 Arrowfield Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. He was ridden to victory by Hugh Bowman in the colours of Mr CC Lai who enjoyed a highly successful days racing. Handling the heavy track conditions very well, Delectation settled back in the field early before coming with a sustained run in the straight to record a narrow victory. Clearly a high-class horse, hopefully he can continue to relax in his races and build on this victory. SILVERBALL 6yo G Kahyasi - Mikalia by Kaldoun The globe trotting Silverball recorded back to back victories when winning over 1600m at Flemington on Saturday. Since joining the team at CWR from Hong Kong, this French-bred gelding has been placed second and won twice from just three starts. Ridden by Ben Melham, he was settled well back early but sprinted through late on to gain a comprehensive victory. The ease of his win woud suggest that he can continue to progress through the grades. Thanks to Bradley Photographers and bruno canatelli for our weekly photos. www.bradleyphotos.com.au

counterattack 2yo C Redoute s Choice - Kisma by Snippets The Geoff and Mary Grimish owned colt Counterattack fulfilled the promise he had shown earlier in the year when scoring his maiden victory over 1200m at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The handsome colt is by Redoute s Choice out of Kisma, making him a three-quarter brother to the Grimish s brilliant mare Red Tracer and fellow Group 1 winner Shellscrape. Blake Shinn was in the saddle and gave the colt a good education whist also securing the victory with stablemate So Willie an eyecatching third. Both runners will have gained great benefit from the race with Chris looking towards the Brisbane Winter Carnival with Counterattack in particular. double happy 3yo G Testa Rossa - Hurl by Redoute s Choice The colours of Mr CC Lai were carried to victory for the third time this week when Double Happy scored over 1300m at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Ridden by Hugh Bowman the gelding was always in a good striking position throughout the race and scored a comfortable win. Having shown promise on several occasions, this win should act as a good confidence booster for this talanted gelding. rye 3yo G Street Cry - Stormy Miss by More Than Ready Promising staying gelding Rye scored a comprehensive maiden success over 1600m at Seymour on Wednesday. Having been narrowly beaten on his previous start, Rye gained immediate compensation under a confident ride from Glen Boss. Always in the ideal position outside the leader, he took over with 400m to run and went on to score a comfortable success. This promising stayer is destined for better things and should continue to improve and build on this maiden success. Double, actually make that Triple, Happy for Mr Lai! Thanks to Bradley Photographers and bruno canatelli for our weekly photos. www.bradleyphotos.com.au

cauthen s power 3yo G Road to Rock - Minori Express by Green Line Express Having shown promise when finishing second on his debut three weeks prior, Cauthen s Power recorded his maiden success on Saturday at Newcastle over 1500m. Ridden by the in form Josh Parr, the gelding came from midfield during the early stages of the race to improve steadily in the straight to record a solid and deserved victory for his patient owners. honcho 3yo G Fastnet Rock - Haiku by Encosta de Lago The Ingham Family bred and owned Honcho relished the step up in distance at Newcastle on Saturday when gaining his maiden success over 1850m. Ridden by Josh Parr, the gelded son of Fastnet Rock raced in midfield position during the early stages of the race. As the field straightened, Honcho came with a sustained run down the centre of the track to record his initial success. He clearly relished the rise in distance and should gain confidence from this victory and continue to improve.

Counterattack in the footsteps of boom colts The Chris Waller-trained Counterattack could follow a similar path to the likes of Pressday, Zoustar and Brazen Beau after breaking his maiden in commanding style at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Counterattack had been placed at each of his three career starts before Wednesday but the colt received no favours from the handicappers with an allocated weight of 60kg for his first-up assignment in the TAB Place Multi 1MW Handicap (1200m). But after jockey Blake Shinn piloted Counterattack ($3.50 fav) to score by a head, Waller s doubts about the weights were dispelled. With 60kg in a one metro win race, it was a big effort, Waller said. Maybe the handicappers knew a bit more than I did. The son of Redoute s Choice has the looks and pedigree to match, being the younger half-brother to Waller s former top class performers Shellscrape and Red Tracer. Waller said he intends to send the colt to Hawkesbury s stand-alone meeting next month before a possible trip to Brisbane for the winter carnival, which would form an almost identical preparation to the two-year-old campaigns of Pressday, Zoustar and Brazen Beau. Zoustar in fact won at the corresponding meeting two years ago, which laid the platform for a career that yielded victories in the Group I Golden Rose (1400m) and Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) as a three-year-old. He ll go to Brisbane and get some confidence up there and hopefully will finish his two-year-old season with a bit of black type next to his name, Waller said. These late types of two-year-olds can certainly make up for lost time. He s a lovely scopey horse and if there s any horse that s going to train on it will be him. Source: Tom Walter, Racenet. sacred falls settles into new home Tuesday saw the stable s dual Doncaster winner and exciting sire prospect Sacred Falls depart for his new residence, Waikato Stud where he s set to begin the next chapter of his life as a stallion, standing for a fee of NZ$30,000. Arriving safely he was met by stud owner and manager, Mark Chittick and now lives in his father O Reilly s box with the champion sire sadly lost to the industry late last year. We ve always wanted to stand O Reilly s best son and this season we will be doing so, said Mark Chittick. We identified Sacred Falls early in his career and it has been hugely exciting to have subsequently been a part of his two Group I Doncasters and the Group I George Main successes with co-owner Dato Yap and the Raffles Racing team. With nine career wins from 1000 to 1600 metres, generating A$4.7 million in earnings, he would surely rate as the highest stakes earner to retire to stud in New Zealand, said Chittick. He fits squarely within Waikato Stud s proven sire selection criteria of having Group I ability with an electric turn of foot. The stable is grateful to the Raffles Racing team and Waikato Stud for entrusting Sacred Falls to our care and wish them the best of luck with him in his new career! Photos: Waikato Stud

GETTING TO KNOW Soufyane Moulin Soufyane works for Chris Waller Racing as a trackwork rider while also riding for the stable in trials and races. Born in 1990 near Paris (Orléans), Soufyane started riding horses when he was just three years old and when he turned seven, he started show jumping until he was 16, winning lots of jumping events and was fifth in the French Championship in 2014. At 16 he wanted to try becomming a jockey but his parents wanted him to finish school so a compromise of racing school and at the same time college was made. It was very hard juggling the two commitents but Soufyane was very motivated and started race riding late for a jockey at age 20 at Cedric Boutin s stable. Soufyane rode his first winner for Mr Alain de Royer Dupré and after that had a little, one year break, to make sure he really wanted to became a jockey. Then when he turned 22 he was ready to return in earnest and entered Pascal Bary s stable, travelling a lot between France, Germany and Italy. Soufyane has ridden winners for many of the famous owners of Europe including Juddmonte Farms, the Aga Khan, Niarchos Family, Weirtemer and today has ridden in 1,800 races for 68 winners including 8 winners in Germany from 102 rides. To date Soufyane hasn t ridden a winner in Australia but he looks forward to the day he does. Nickname? Souff but in Australia all people call me Sou Ps: I hate Sou as in French it can mean too drunk. Best quote? Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. Favourite part of the job? Galloping for sure. Favourite horse? Everyday I have a new favorite - today it s French Emotion. Best horse ever seen? Goldikova. Role model? Haha!! Chris Waller of course... So which horse can I ride next Saturday Chris?! Favourite food? Eggs benedict, hollandaise, sausage. Favourite jockey? Stephane Pasquier If you weren t in racing, what would you have done? I ve never thought about that but probably an actor. If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? George Clooney and Madonna. Event in the world that you would most like to attend? Breeders Cup. What would you do with your last $5? Buy a kinder surprise, sometimes you find good surprises. Tip for the weekend? Heart Testa.
