Waller weekly news 20 may 2016 Mackintosh signalled his arrival in Queensland in dominant fashion on Saturday and headlined a fantastic week for the team with nine winners in total and some pleasing performances by place-getters as well. This week s winners represent a quality line up of promising 3yos who are starting to hit their straps in the stable plus some relatively-low cost imports who have been quick to provide their owners with good financial returns as well as a bit of fun. Recent Kiwi import Our Beatnik is a prime example of this success being an inexpensive purchase and only arriving in the country last month. Vassal, already the winner of three in a row, was also a low-cost purchase by Chris and Guy who spotted him at the Tattersall s July Sale last year when in the UK for Brazen Beau s Royal Ascot campaign. This success underlines the proficiency of our stable when it comes to identifying not only the likes of Group One winners Winx, Amicus, Preferment and Kermadec to name a few as yearlings but also our commitment and knack for providing owners with ready-made racehorses at a low entry level. There s plenty of great racing action around the country this weekend, the highlight being the $650,00 Doomben Cup where Siritjim and Lady Le Fay are set to line up to try and join Metal Bender and Beaten Up as winners of the Group One feature for the stable. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend with plenty of racing luck! INSIDE THIS ISSUE WINNERs News, getting to know Daniel Cremin & photos admin@cwallerracing.com Encosta Line. Mackintosh and Blake Shinn winning the Gr.2 Rough Habit Plate on Saturday.
l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK mackintosh 3yo G Pins - Lolly Scramble by Generous Mackintosh made it two wins from his first two starts for the stable and stamped himself as a leading contender for the Gr.1 Queensland Derby when taking out the Gr.3 Rough Habit plate over 2000m at Doomben on Saturday. Blake Shinn was in the saddle and with no one else keen to lead he found himself in front. The former Kiwi galloper controlled the race before quickening clear in the straight for a cosy victory. Tony Muollo s distinctive yellow and black colours were also to the fore in Queensland last year on Press Statement with another Group One carnival success hopefully on the cards this year. our beatnik 4yo G Elusive City - Fair Fly by Kenfair This former New Zealand galloper made the best possible start to his career on this side of the Tasman when winning at Scone on Friday over 1300m. Glyn Schofield settled him last in the eleven runner field early on and in fact they were still last with 400m left to run before bursting through inside the final furlong to score a highly promising victory. hogmanay 3yo G Lonhro - Hootenanny by Best Western This promising son of the mighty Lonhro broke his maiden at Scone on Friday over 1300m. Rory Hutchings has been riding in great form of late and that continued over the past week. He produced another confident ride settling Hogmanay at the rear of the field in the early stages. He then presented his mount with a strong run down the long home straight to score easily in the finish. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Ross stevenson and darryl sherer for our weekly photos.
loving home 5yo G Shamardal - Fallen in Love by Galileo This imported son of Shamardal has been a model of consistency since joining the stable and he added another victory when winning at Scone on Saturday over 2200m. Tye Angland took the mount and he had Loving Home prominent throughout before taking over early in the straight and fighting on strongly under the top weight of 60kg to score a gutsy victory. vassal 4yo G Dansili - Vituisa by Bering This imported son of Dansili, a sire the stable has had plenty of success with, made it three wins in a row when scoring at Randwick on Wednesday over 2000m under Jason Collett. As is his usual racing style Vassal was settled at the rear of the field early on. As they straightened Vassal began a sustained run which saw him sweep to the front close to home and record another solid victory. mount omei 3yo F Fastnet Rock - Zavana by Encosta de Lago Mr Lai s very promising daughter of Fastnet Rock recorded her second career victory when winning at Kembla Grange on Saturday over 2000m. Adrian Layt was on board and he had her settled in midfield early on before she stayed on strongly in the straight to hold off her stablemate Baubo who ran well into second place. in mum s memory 3yo F Domesday - Double Eight Carat by Commands John Starr s home-bred daughter of Domesday broke her maiden at Kembla Grange on Saturday over 1600m. Chad Lever was on board and had her travelling well throughout before producing her in the straight to win comfortably. This was a well deserved victory for this consistent sort and it should prove to be a good confidence booster for her going forward. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Ross stevenson and darryl sherer for our weekly photos.
rye 4yo G Street Cry -Stormy Miss by More Than Ready Rye returned to the winners circle on his first start back from a spell when winning at Hawkesbury on Thursday over 1400m. Brenton Avdulla was aboard and he settled the son of Street Cry in midfield before making his move turning for home. Rye was in front a long way from home but fought on bravely to fight off all challengers. navua mist 3yo F Exceed and Excel - Eight Eighty Eight by Maria s Mon John Starr s promising daughter of Exceed and Excel was another to return from a break with a win this week when scoring at Hawkesbury on Thursday over 1000m. In form apprentice Rory Hutchings was in the saddle and he had Navua Mist in a midfield position early on before hitting the front inside the final furlong to score a narrow victory. guineas colt in the making! Limited opportunities are left to join the stable in racing a very smart son of Champion Sire Fastnet Rock. From a speedy family, this colt is an athletic type whose exceptional physique caught the CWR sales team s eye. Having had success with another athletically built Fastnet Rock in AMICUS, the stable has purchased this colt with late two-year-old races and then the Guineas races as a three year old as targets. Bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster believes he has what it takes to make it to the top He s a really good colt with an abundance of athleticism. He s from a great family which features the Slipper winner Polar Success. His stake-placed dam EAU DE JOIE is a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner POLAR SUCCESS with this precocious family also featuring Slipper place-getter BRING ME THE MAID among the numerous stakes performers. Eau De Joie is by ENCOSTA DE LAGO, a broodmare sire the stable has an affinity with thanks to the likes of Group One winner JAPONISME and fellow stakes winner SADLER S LAKE. This colt is broken in and returning to the stables in the next couple of weeks to further his education - get in quick, call Sophie on or sophie@cwallerracing.com
Chris Waller feels Counterattack is ready to come of age in Queensland this winter Chris Waller has pinpointed Counterattack as the horse from his stable most likely to use this year s Queensland winter carnival as a platform to spring stardom. Every year Waller seems to unearth a new star in Queensland with Winx, Brazen Beau and Zoustar just a few who have used the Queensland winter as a platform to spring success in recent years. Waller admits he will be light on with two-year-olds in Queensland this winter but feels Counterattack can use the carnival to go to a new level. Waller insists immaturity has held the Redoute s Choice colt back to date but he feels the three-year-old will come of age at his second Queensland winter carnival. Certain horses exceed your expectations and certain horses disappoint, Waller said. One horse is Counter attack and he was brought up here last year thinking he was the next big thing and he still hasn t won that Group 1 yet. But Counterattack is definitely a horse to follow and I just think he was a bit immature last prep looking back on things. But he is a horse that hasn t had luck and Queensland can bring horses luck. Counterattack was scrat ched from last weekend s BTC Cup and saved for this Saturday s Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) which could well overshadow the Group 1 Doomben Cup as the most exciting race in Brisbane this weekend. Stablemate Sir Bacchus will be among Counterattack s opponents as will New Zealand Derby winner Rangipo, the Gold Coast Guineas first two placegetters Takedown and Sold For Song, last start stakes winner Rageese and the promising Spieth. Perhaps the only piece of the puzzle missing from the three-year-old sprint is exciting filly Ghisoni, who is likely to be saved for either the Doomben 10,000 or Glen logan Park Stakes the following week instead. Counterattack.
When asked whether Sir Bacchus or Counterattack was his best chance in the Fred Best at this early stage, Waller replied: I think Counterattack is the class act. He is as good as Japonisme and Japonisme beat him home in the Coolmore in the spring and nosed him out in their last meeting. But Counterattack was three wide and had no luck that day. Counterattack is a very good three-year-old and I think he is a genuine Stradbroke chance. That s not to undersell Sir Bacchus, who has been aimed solely at this carnival and could not have been more impressive in his two victories in restricted grade in Sydney so far this campaign. Sir Bacchus is a good example of what we like to aim at the carnival and when he was showing form in the summer we put him away and forgot about the autumn carnival in Sydney and targeted Queensland. Waller said. He is certainly one of the key target horses for sure. Sir Bacchus. Waller will also be represented by Spiritjim, Lady Le Fay and potentially Junoob in the Doomben Cup. - Gold Coast Bulletin
getting to know daniel cremin Daniel Cremin is a Rosehill-based work rider and strapper and he kindly took some time to do this week s staff interview I was born in South London but am from an Irish background. I was very sporty when I was younger, my weekends and evenings were always rushing to get to some sort of training session or match. I never rode a horse before I was 16 and grew up with the plan to be a plumber and then decided as I was about 4ft 10 leaving school that I would head down the jockey route. I then went to the racing school in Newmarket and caught the bug and I ve been stuck with horses ever since. I rode 24 winners in England and had over 250 race rides. Then in November 2015 I decided to move to Australia, where I worked for David Hayes and Tom Dabernig for four months before I moved to Sydney to work for Chris. Nickname? I have been called many nicknames but I m not exposing them to the lads at work on here. Favourite part of the job? Clocking in! Favourite horse? Cellarman. Best horse ever seen? It would be Frankel but Sea the Stars was a very good horse too. Role Model? I m still on the look out for one. Favourite food? Bacon and cabbage (a traditional Irish dinner). Favourite jockey? Charlie Bishop (an English jockey). If you weren t in racing, what would you have done? If I wasn t in racing I would have been a plumber. If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? Kevin Hart (a comedian) and Scotty T (off Geordie Shore) Event in the world that you would most like to attend? V FESTIVAL - a music festival England. What would you do with your last $5? Put it on 17 on the roulette. Tip for the weekend? Tsaritsa.
